Clickbait Sony following Microsofts recent Playbook, crossplay, back compat, PC releases and now MAU

Are these decisions right or wrong?

If there are right can we just accept that Microsoft is ahead of the game rather than have long discussions about how suddenly when Sony does the same thing ... it’s ok.

For the record I think all these decisions are correct and I believed that even when MS was against them!

Ie 360 having no bc sucked and not supporting crossplay then also sucked.

If they are not right ( in your view) do you care?

“ Sony’s Chief Executive Officer Kenichiro Yoshida has said the business should be judged by the number of active users, not the number of hardware units sold.”

Agreed. Microsoft did a complete 360 from 3rd place this generation. They're now leading the way.

Yes but it was an after thought only supported some titles and had serious bugs.

I love it when these no name gaming sites trying to make a name for themselves get in on the FUD action.
The quote was from Bloomberg international news... the FUD seems to be you about the source which is odd .. because it’s linked to in the post.

For your reference
“ Sony’s Chief Executive Officer Kenichiro Yoshida has said the business should be judged by the number of active users, not the number of hardware units sold”

I stand corrected then, even though the Bloomberg artical is also filled with a lot of maybes, both companies should just reveal the specs/price and be done with this whole song and dance .

I don't think anyone ever claimed that MAU wasn't more important than sales.
That's a given.

It just comes across as a pathetic attempt of "please be excited" when the one in last place avoids sales numbers and diverts all attention to MAU.

Because let's be honest, this just a typical #sonytoo.

just accept that Microsoft is ahead of the game
They are with a lot of things and have been for a while now, even the always online thing from 2013.
One should lead from a position of strength and by example, the former doesn't apply to Microsoft but I give them credit for innovation all-around.

PlayStation plays it safe and sticks to what works, it's smart business, less risk for them and if it's successful you do the same.
In the past it was what that defined Sony as a brand - innovation and was often a success story, there's still innovation in every? sector but the market itself is different from the 90's.

Why the hell would you give a flying fuck about someone who buys a console and then never uses it outside of the one game they want to play?

A lot of you derps only care about monthly/quarterly numbers and have completely brushed aside how many stick around.

MAU has been the barometer for years and I'm assuming some of you just recently got your management degree and are in total shock that you're not making close to 6 figures straight out of college.

Here's a hint. Those who have a management degree and have made it this far deserve the money they make. Most of you, we don't respect and wouldn't trust you with a piece of string.

Despite all the digital kool-aid being dispensed by some PR teams, the console economy did not use to be 100% services based / digital purchases based, it is still just transitioning a bulk of its profits there. A lot of purchases used and still use to be made by people not purchasing a PSN+ or LIVE Gold subscription and money is there to be made from people that do not even get the free sub tier.
Additionally, there is revenue in the HW sector if you are not just following the razors and razor blades models and people know that.

Wow that is a lot more than I remember lol!!

Sony did used to taunt them about it at the time ... how times have changed lol.
Halo 2, a big title for Xbox, had tons of glitches in BC mode so that list needs to take that into account too.
  • Cabela's® Big Game Hunter™ 2005 Adventures
  • Cabela’s Dangerous Hunts™
  • Cabela's® Dangerous Hunts™ 2
  • Cabela’s Outdoor Adventures™ 06
  • Cabela's Deer Hunt™ 2005 Season
  • Cabela's Deer Hunt™ 2004 Season

There is some padding there and at the time PS3 supported 99% of PS2 and PS1 titles, many more than that, at a more accurate emulation quality.

Wake up. The concept of paying for online has been around since the original xbox and they made it extremely easy to play on consoles regardless of what game you're playing.

Lol, got my coffee... I woke up already thank you very much. Re-read what I said once you are fully woken up and got enough caffeine in your body too :p.

It is not how easy online purchases are, it is how much percentage of user spending they represent/command vs physical media for example.

Noob question, what does MAU stand for?
Monthly Active Users.
From Nintendo, to Sony, to Microsoft,. They all want to know who sticks around.

As much as some armchair analysts want to tell you otherwise, by and large, investors care about who is actually using the machines they bought day to day and spend money.,

I managed to completely ignore everything you said previously whe
you said that there could be a profit with hardware and consoles.

Yeah, I could see you did manage to read an isolated sentence and cut off rational thought before context could creep in ;).

Back when physical purchases were all there was really and getting buns in the seats / console Sars was the only important thing you would see console makers, and their nice big per game royalties, launch consoles at a massive loss and keep spending money to reduce costs to manufacture and then also cost to consumers... e.g.: getting $99 PSOne and PSTwo.

Seriously though, there can be profit and the trend is to stop losing and start making money with HW releases too, see the rise of the mid generation updates and the HW margins (that over time went less and less in the red at the time of the console launch to the black with a launch game and/or an online subscription... compare PS3 at launch with PS4 Pro at launch for example). Let’s also not kid ourselves that everyone dreams of Apple like 40% profit margins on HW ;).

Physical game purchases are so 17 years ago and hardware is a loss or break even each and every generation. And I agree that everyone would love that Apple retention rate as they force people to upgrade.

Yeah damn Sony.... Time traveled and allowed ps2 to be backwards compatible with ps1, have crossplay with pc (ff11), had a whole division (SOE) developing pc games in the 2000s and reported active users in 2008!

I can't wait for Xbox portable so people can say that Nintendo is following MS!

No, the 360 had the same kind of BC as the Xbox one, you need to redownload a binary for the games you want to run and most games aren't on the list (very few on the 360, a relatively decent amount on the one)... I don't know what to call it, but this is not backward compatibility. To be backward compatible you need a transparent layer of compatibility that will mimic the old system's features and try to run software for it, that could be done in hardware, software or a mix of both.

So the GBA had it, the PS2 had it, the Wii had it, the Nintendo DS had it, the PS3 had it... No Microsoft console let you freely play previous gen consoles games on their machine, what they do is nice, but this is unfortunately not complete.

Didn't Sony had BC since PS2 era ( the first one in console history ), then FF XI crossplay with PC players during PS2 era? Where is Sony following MS in these department?

Physical game purchases are so 17 years ago and hardware is a loss or break even each and every generation. And I agree that everyone would love that Apple retention rate as they force people to upgrade.
Physical game sales are still occurring, but I can understand the PR spiel is 100% digital focused (less captivating when you stop and ask yourself why the big publishers want you to you to buy in this scheme...).

No hate directed at Xbox, but why take notes from the people you destroyed for an entire generation? Cross play and back compat are fine, though.
Biggest issue for me is cross save not cross play. I like playing Diablo III on the go, but at home I would rather play it in 4K-ish with full detail instead of 1080p-ish.

Halo 2, a big title for Xbox, had tons of glitches in BC mode so that list needs to take that into account too.
  • Cabela's® Big Game Hunter™ 2005 Adventures
  • Cabela’s Dangerous Hunts™
  • Cabela's® Dangerous Hunts™ 2
  • Cabela’s Outdoor Adventures™ 06
  • Cabela's Deer Hunt™ 2005 Season
  • Cabela's Deer Hunt™ 2004 Season

There is some padding there and at the time PS3 supported 99% of PS2 and PS1 titles, many more than that, at a more accurate emulation quality.

All Xbox 360s played a handful of BC games.

A handful of PS3 played all BC games.

Take your poison.

All PS3’s until the Slim redesign played 99% of PS2 and PS1 games accurately and sales of the BC-less PS3 soared so customers spoke (I was upset at that decision, held on to my launch PS3 60 GB model). The other poison was much reduced BC lost and plenty of glitch even in their biggest titles (see Halo 2 BC). I picked both at the time, but one was better IMHO BC wise.

"Ahead of the game" belongs to the realm of hindsight. We'll see how things turn out.

Sony's portable hardware was "ahead of the game" twice and Sony no longer makes portable gaming hardware.

3-5 years from now we could be making very different statements.

Sony following Microsofts recent Playbook, crossplay, back compat, PC releases and now MAU?

vs Reality.....

Sony did crossplay way back on PS2, in the PS3 gen Sony had more crossplay games vs MS's inexistent crossplay on the 360, and of course the big isn't it ironic statement is that Sony has more crossplay games on PS4 over the XBONES by a country mile....

Back Compatibility...….Sony invented back compatibility on consoles.....PS2 was fully back compatible with PS1, meaning every game could be played. PS3 was fully back compatible with PS2 and PS1, again which meant every game could be played. No games missing, no partial BC, no selective catalog choosing.....Any game you loved as obscure as they were could be played....

Sony has had no issues with PC, they have a burgeoning release schedule on PC and mobile....remember that Sony also has game releases from their Pictures and Music divisions…...As opposed, Microsoft gaming was pretty much PC before consoles, they have a platform that beckons support on PC, even though their support on PC has been pretty mediocre as the company who owns windows, has a store in windows, tried XBLIVE on windows. Age of Empires and Flight Simulator are not attractive reasons enough to make their games on PC an argument holding weight......They've always had more incentive to release their games on PC since windows and MS are intertwined, yet they never bolstered forward with that strategy because's Sony's strategy is what is profitable in this industry and Sony doe not own windows, if they did, I could assure you, there would be better windows support of their franchises since PS1...….

Yet it still funny seeing OP hook up PC to boost Microsoft, yet he forgets that MS has an XBOX interface and app in windows, they have said that PC is XBOX......Yet look how long it took them to release more titles on PC, their own platform......Only when they realized not many people cared for their franchises, they try to boost sales on the platform they neglected all along.....Microsoft+PC should have been 1 entity a long time ago......Sony's business is console, not primarily PC, but they have had no issues with crossplay PC since PS2, they have no issues releasing the occasional Sony Published title on PC as well......

Sony has always done MAU, remember all these Sony conferences with all these milestones highlighted by Kaz and figures figures figures......They've always done MAU, but they also did figures with MAU's to bring meaning to the MAU's......Sony's MAU's were never left in obscurity....You always knew the real numbers...That's the difference.....

Calm your chicken tits, i'm just annoyed with the amount of threads, articals and discussion around these next gen consoles (of which we know very little) when there's a thread made for them.
How about some ACTUAL games discussion/ recommendations threads for a change, instead of this back and forth thinly vailed console wars shit.

PS2 had backwards compatibility and PS4 had crossplay with PC

I don't think Sony is quite following MS tbh
