Sony going third party (lol): ESRB puts up PlayStation Suite test for Wii, PS3, more

ESRB had created a test to probably see how many platforms one of their boxes could fit. Interestingly this shows PlayStation Suite titles (PSSuite), and PlayStation Certified Devices. Does this mean PSSuite games will have to go through ESRB ratings like Minis? Will they be PS3 compatible as well? That's the real news here. The Nintendo platforms were just likely the ESRB fooling around.

It's known for a while.

It has never been known that Suite stuff would be on the DS (how?), DSi, and Wii, lol. Nor has it been known that Suite titles may need to be ESRB rated, or could be PS3-compatible.

Yeah my bad, I corrected myself.

I'm surprised Sony would let Suite titles come out on their competitors platforms, also if the Suite titles need to be rated by ESRB doesn't it make it hard and slower for games to get released on it, it won't be like iOS or Android store.

I don't see a games reach spreading out as a bad thing. Even though I doubt this is true.

If this PS Suite is what it is then it's going to be a great platform for indies or anyone to put their games on and be automatically accessible to multiple devices.

another thing that I find strange not only that Sony are releasing Suite compatibility on their competitors platforms, but the DS is a rather weak system, which means Suite titles will have extremely low spec requirements.

Yeah, it'd be an added step.

Minis needed a rating. IIRC it's about $2500 to get one. It's one reason devs give when there's a price disparity between a game on minis vs a game on the app store.

From Sony's comments so far it does sound like the Suite submission process may be a little higher-barrier and targeting slightly more expensive content than the iOS or Android Marketplace, but the requirement for a ESRB rating would be a little disappointing. Still, I guess it's an improvement over minis where you needed to invest in specific dev kits AND the rating (not to mention a more involved porting process).

edit - also, I'm sure the nintendo platforms stuff is purely ESRB 'fooling around', putting in random platforms etc. Nintendo would never allow a competing digital store on their platforms and stuff like DS etc. wouldn't meet Suite's minimum requirements (assuming Xperia Play is sort of the baseline).

I can't tell if this is a really sarcastic thread, of if people really don't understand that it was just a test on the ESRB's site. Probably half and half.

I don't believe for one second that PS Suite will exist on Wii or DS.

OK
The bad news is Suite has to be rated by ESRB, which is highly dissapointing
The good news is that Suite may be compatibly with PS3
The joke is that Suite is going to be compatible on DS, I am going to assume this is an error or prank

Yup. I heard it from various sources today. Kaz is going to hold a press conference sometime soon to announce that PSN is never coming back, and that Sony is going third-party instead. There will be some sort of PS3/PSP trade-in program at all major retailers as well. Big news. I'm surprised ESRB managed to leak it first.

Friend Codes and constant long outages due to cyber attacks.

Or it could be zillions of classics + achievements with free and pretty decent online play!

I dont know what you guys were expecting of Suite, it was clear from the begining it was going to be a platform for sony to re-release psone and maybe PSP games for android devices. The whole "it is going to be a Sony APP store omg" was crazy talk.

Now if it really works on nintendo consoles, that is really crazy hehe.

The surprising thing is that Sony's going to start out by making AO-rated games. I guess they need money quickly and know what they have to do.

But it's not just for PSone games and PSP ports :) They want new mobile content for Suite, it is very clearly being targeted as an alternative to the Android Marketplace for games, and devs who perhaps want to try to extract more value from games.

I agree, this is true. I just read it myself on a popular game message board after it was posted by a reputable mod.

Yeah it's a bit bold and surprising, but we really have no reason to doubt this. After all it does say FINAL in the rating summary, caps and all. Seems pretty final to me.

Didn't the ESRB clarify that the minis ratings depended on the production budget, like other games, and that cheaper ones would be $800?

Eh, it's Kotaku, but:
ESRB spokesman Eliot Mizrachi contacted Kotaku to remind that the ratings authority has a different rate schedule for smaller games. "The ESRB has a reduced fee of $800 for games that have development costs under $250,000," Mizrachi said, "which would likely apply to virtually all PSP Minis."

Speaking of ESRB (kinda OT), when they remove something that was rated, does this mean the game will never come out or they're just "hiding" it and the game will come out sometime?

It was likely removed at the request of the company to hide it.
They'll leave up ratings for games that never come out.

Eh, it's Kotaku, but:

Oh, well that's not as bad then.

But, presumably to get on euro and JPN stores you need to go through their respective rating boards too, so the cost probably adds up a bit for a global release.

It just smells of desperation, like a b-list celebrity who "leaks" a porn video of herself. You can't just Paris Hilton the video game industry, Sony

I could be wrong, but I don't think CERO charges for rating stuff. After all, it's a self-regulatory board set up by the CESA, which is made up of the major publishers in Japan in the first place. I think Square Enix's Wada is the president of CESA.

You sure about that? I'd think it'd work better in the video game industry than movies, personally.

Of course, given the lower power of the DS, it'll probably just be a bunch of hentai game ports. Surprised Nintendo's allowing it now that I think about it, but I guess if it doesn't hit Japan, they're cool with it.

Paris Hilton-ing meaning... Sony will leak a scandal between themselves and Nintendo and end up trashy and say "that's hot" to almost anything?

It's an experiment and also an homage to Nintendo's marketing experiment--Sony is calling it the White Ocean strategy. There's definitely a market out there and interactivity on the DS screen (and 3D when they eventually move to 3DS) will give it an edge over Naughty America and Empflix.

I don't understand, how come iOS and Android marketplace can get away from being rated while Mini's, PS Suite and DSi store get rated. Also does Xbox Live Indie games get rated.

I'm sure there is a perfectly reasonable explanation for all of this.

The Cafe is actually made by both Nintendo and Sony, they are teaming up next-gen against Microsoft!

The Sony and Nintendo booths are right next to each other at E3, maybe an announcement?
