Sony Pictures making Metal Gear movie!!!

Sean Bean was in the previous Sony Pictures videogame adaption, Silent Hill, which I might add is the best the 'genre' has brought forward so far.

20 million unique metal gear players? I find that quite hard to believe.

Yes the series is quite popular, but not that popular.

If they take it seriously, make it a MOVIE first and foremost, and market it right, it could break the "game movies suck ass" stigma.

I mean, the whole tanker episode from MGS2 could be awesome as a short film.

If Hideo has a lot to do with the production of it (I know he's been really strict about making a movie of it as he's been offered several times), which it seems like he will be, I have faith it should be pretty decent.

I agree... but NOTHING beyond that... or John Q. Public will be repeating "WTF is going on" more than any movie ever inspired before...

Have you seen a video game related movie before? You're really setting yourself up for disappointment. Especially if you think it's going to set the box office by storm. Your previous post comparing it to success stories like Casino Royale and Da Vinci Code is to be honest, silly. You think MGS has anything on these licenses? No ordinary person knows what MGS is, and won't care.

Also, I'm gay for Sean Bean. So anything he's in I'll watch. Let's hope he's in this.
Depends on the movie. I'm pretty sure Halo would have been a huge hit. You have to have the right people behind it though. Not Uwe ****ing Boll. Let's stick with the Peter Jacksons.

Though I don't think a trilogy would work. We don't even know the full story yet in the actual games themselves, and we're already 5 going on 6 in the main series of games in. They're going to have to take huge liberties with the stories to make it work.

What if they just to do a part of the story that hasn't been told in one the games yet? It'd be better if they don't adapt one of the games.

The epic cheese of a typical MGS storyline in a big budget film is going to make me laugh so hard.
the more I think about it, the more it becomes discouraging :(

edit: they would probably have to create an entirely new story that shares the same mythos of the game, but then would it still be considered a faithful "METAL GEAR" movie? would they still include snake and his backstory?

how much are they going to stray away from the games?

Let's take the actors, Kojima had in mind:

Snake:

I think MGS3 would be the best. The relationship between Snake and the Boss is genuinely interesting. The thing is, there are characters in the game that serve no purpose in the story (Fury, Pain, Fear), they're just there so the player can kick some ass. They'd probably have to be removed, or they'd have to be really careful about it. Either way, the sequence of events, etc, can't be just taken from the game. I think they'll go along with the gist of it, bring over prominent characters, the setting, and tweak the story a bit. The story is just great haha, Snake goes in to stop Russia from taking over the world with nukes. Then you throw in the token hot girl (Eve) who leaves him at the end, Ocelot for some comic relief haha. It's an action film at heart, I think it'll be pretty awesome.

the young snake shown at the end of the trailer kinda reminds me of David Duchovney. I suppose after you run through the A list he might not be a bad choice. He is certainly used to acting in stuff with WTF plots.

My quick picks:

Writer/Director: Michael Mann

Snake - Ryan Gosling

Ocelot - Rade Serbedzija

Ninja(voice) - Andy Serkis

Mantis - Steve Buscemi

Raven - Louis Gross(Sopranos)

Sniper Wolf - Milla Jovovich

Otacon - Edward Norton

Raiden - Patricia Arquette

Here's the deal...

MGS is Kojima's brainchild. He cares about it as much as he cares about himself and will make sure the movie is true to the game.

No, Uwe jackass boll will not be a part of the movie, as previously stated by Hideo Kojima. This movie will definitely be one of the greatest game-to-film adaption.

Mark my words!

Bump this post two year later... :)

I've seen a few video game movies, and with ONE exception (silent hill) they've all been based on some pretty shallow games with little to no backstory.

The movie ends up a mess because the writer/director had to make up all kinds of crazy crap to turn the source material into something watchable for 90 minutes, and it ends up pissing off fans as well as casual moviegoers. Think about it: Doom, Super Mario Brothers, House of the Dead, Mortal Kombat, and Street Fighter are good games with nonexistant plots and zero character development. This isn't the case with metal gear. There's enough dialogue in each of the games that reworking it into a script isn't much of a stretch.

Casino Royale was a GREAT film, but there have been some pretty terrible bond films. The licence alone won't make or break the movie. It wasn't that long ago that pretty much all comic book films were B movie atrocities, and now you can't go more than a month or two without running into another one in the theatre. If Metal Gear gets a good director that takes it's source material seriously, it will do well.

We want someone that can get the goddamned job done.

What about paul thomas anderson?

There is no question the movie will not be that great but I will still see it first day. To make this movie great all they need to do is cast Samuel L. Jackson and title the movie Solid Snake Moan. Guaranteed 50 million in the boxoffice.

Wasn't Snakes on a Plane a letdown at the box office?

David Hayter should do the role as always :D

He's a bad actor. While the actors who played supporting roles in MGS2 and especially MGS3, they kept getting better while Hayter stayed the same. I hope he doesn't come back for MGS4.

There is no question his acting is weak but it would be terrible to change him now since the voice is so iconic now.

This is the worst quote ever.

You know, I could see a MGS movie being the most retarded thing ever. Honestly, it'll be so cheesy most of the mainstream would hate it. Now if it came out maybe about a decade back, I could see it doing well.

As long as they retain the games' camp, preposterous style I'm sure this could end up being okay. If they take it po-face seriously, on the other hand....:lol
