PS3 with some impressive legs. And we' haven't even gotten a truly budget-priced model yet.

At this rate, I think it could easily add another 10 million units to its lifetime sales.

Regarding Game:

Sales
increased 5.1% year-on-year (a 14% decrease on a constant currency basis) to 155.7 billion yen (1,588million U.S. dollars) primarily due to the favorable impact of foreign exchange rates. The decrease in sales on a constant currency basis was primarily due to a decrease in unit sales of PlayStation®2 (“PS2”), PlayStation®3 (“PS3”) and PSP® (PlayStation Portable) hardware, partially offset by increased PS3 software unit sales compared to the same quarter of the previous fiscal year.

Operating loss

of 0.8 billion yen (8 million U.S. dollars) was recorded, compared to operating income of 2.3 billion yen in the same quarter of the previous fiscal year. This year-on-year decline was primarily due to the impact of a strategic price reduction for the PlayStation®Vita (“PS Vita”) and the unfavorable impact of foreign exchange rates, partially offset by the above-mentioned increase in software unit sales.

PSV is presumably sold at a loss now.

Also, this implies unit sales of PS3 last year were greater than 2M.

I'm not sure what to make of this. What were the expectations for the quarter? Sony's been through a hell of a time the past few years, does an $8 million loss mean that they're finally reducing the losses or that they're still struggling with no end in sight?

And they're almost completely crowded out of the other market they're trying to penetrate.

For now. Vita is a long game device once PS4 arrives and once the Vita ecosystem expands with VitaTV. It's probably more powerful than Nintendo's next handheld will be so it's got years of viability as a platform remaining.

PS2 numbers are not included in F-13, can anyone have a guess on how much did PS2 sell in F-12?

EDIT: in F-11 PS2 sold 4.2 million, let's assume it sold 4 million in F-12 (unlikely, I expect less).

That would put PS3 sales LTD sep (83.5 - 4) = 79.5 million vs 79.4 (Xbox360)

I think it's pretty safe to assume that PS3 has already outsold 360 comfortably LTD, quite an achievement to be honest.

Don't forget about the fact that now that PS+ is required for online multiplayer on PS4, people are gonna look at all those PS Vita IGC games tied to their account, and be much more willing to buy a PS Vita.

Or the fact they have to pay a yearly fee might make them think they have less money to spend on gaming!

PS3 outselling all other consoles combined this year and then some.

And people thought Sony were going into next gen as the underdogs. The market is theirs to lose.

If I am reading it right. Sony expects to ship 8.5 Million PS4+PS3 between October and March.

11.9 M between October and March

- PS3 6.9 M between October and March

- PS4 5.0 M between October and March

I was reading what they had already sold wrong. I though it was more.

Their smartphones are doing well..that's an impressive decrease in losses
Gaming is hard to tell...less profit or minor loss from vita + w/e else caused the small loss
Camera/imaging numbers are poor
Pictures...dat white house Down
Tv gonna Tv ...even if it's a decrease in losses

I'm guessing Sony's public forecast of 5M PS4s is below their internal sales forecasts, both to give them some wiggle room if they don't quite meet the internal forecast, and to give themselves something to brag about if they do.

If all goes according to plan, how many units can we realistically expect them to move by April? 6M? 7M? Or do we not even expect them to hit 5M? Patcher said they can build 1M/month, right? If they started production by the beginning of September — and they seem to have — that'd give them 7M units through March. Can they actually sell that many?

well no, it would be a good achievement if they reach the 5 M.

So, operating loss. And next quarter PS4 is coming. That should produce even more loss, right? Or it is sold at profit?
