Sony Santa Monica, Naughty Dog, Guerrilla Games, KojiPro, Sucker Punch, Polyphony Digital are likely all making cross gen games.

We have known about SSM, GG and PD making GoW, Horizon and GT7 for both PS4 and PS5, but recent rumors of a GoT expansion, Kojima announcing Death Stranding Director's Cut and Naughty Dog announcing they are actively working on Factions... suggests that almost all Sony studios are working on cross gen games. It's not just a few studios who began development back in 2017 and 2018 before devkits were sent out.

It's highly unlikely that GoT expansion would be PS5 only. Death Stranding Directors Cut look pretty much identical to the PS4 version, and Factions was always going to be cross gen.

That means 6 out of the top 8 Sony Studios are all actively making cross gen games with Sony Bend and Insomniac being the only two studios likely working on next gen only games.

If those June 28th or July 8th rumors of a Sony event are true then we might see the following cross gen games from Sony's first party studios.
  • SSM - GoW 2
  • PD - GT7
  • GG - Horizon Forbidden West
  • ND - TLOU Factions expansion
  • KojiPro - Death Stranding expansion
  • GoT - Expansion
Thoughts? Concerns? When will we see next gen only games from these studios if they are all working on last gen stuff in 2021? Are we looking at 2025 or do they have multiple teams who might show up with next gen only games at this summer event?

I hope ND and SP decided to make TLOU Factions and this GoT expansion next gen only. It would be nice to have smaller $40 next gen only games this fall while we wait for Horizon, GoW and GT7 to drop next year.

Doesn't really matter with GT7 because it started as a PS5 only game which just recently changed so they will have to figure how to make it fit on PS4.

As for naughty dog, yeah because it's a spin off of TLOU2 but doubtful if their next single player game is cross gen.

As long as the current gen versions don't rely on outdated methods for loading and streaming in the game data, I'm fine with that. The days of things only being possible on certain hardware are fading away. Push the envelope on every platform and everyone wins.

The next proper ND game will most likely be PS5 only but any expansions will be cross gen. Any expansions to games that came out in PS4 should be. I wish Horizon would be PS5 only because Guerilla could have really went all out with it.

Factions II was rebooted in early 2019, when PS5 specs were known amongst Sony developers.

It has yet to be revealed, which means it's likely a 2022 release.

There's already statistics showing PS5 versions of games outselling their PS4 counterpart by significant margins.

Over the next 6-9 months, it's expected that PS5 stock will reach equilibrium and it would benefit Sony to incentivize PS5 sales to consumers.

Factions II being a PS5 exclusive would benefit PS5 sales considerably more than if it was cross gen.

Plus, Factions II being GAAS means it's ideally going to be relavent to Sony for the next 5 or so years.

I wouldn't hold my breath on a PS4 version.

how many studios does Sony has right now? Wouldn't that mean some of the remaining studios are working next gen games? There could also be Returnal case.

And I doubt Sony is willing to give up those 115m console customers. That is throwing away your golden 🥚. They are business people, not some people who only cares about next gen. That is a business suicide to leave that amount of money.

It's extremely disappointing for Jim "we believe in generations" lying Ryan.

I think we may get a naughty dog new ip reveal soon which of course will be next gen only (I hope lmao). But yeah, in terms of next gen only content, it's looking really dry for the next year.

Well given the consoles use x86 architecture I don't expect 5-6 years dev times this time around, the engines are already there, the gameplays are already there, the universes are already there, all that reatove work has been finished, so I think all those games will launch within a year or two, so not a big deal.

As for the next wave of games, supposedly most of the studios have two separate teams, so it's safe to believe that next-gen only titles are already on the way as well.

My biggest concern is GT7 tho, being cross-gen will hurt it more than any other title, and the chances are there won't be any othet GT this gen, rather a continuous support for GT7, but extra cars and tracks won't compensate all the shortcomings of the series.

I'm not concerned at all. I'd rather have a cross-gen game now/next year than a next-gen only game in 5. Games will run better, look better and load faster on PS5.
You people acting like EVERY GAME needs to take full advantage of every single next-gen feature of the console are honestly ridiculous.
Also, Playstation Studios work on more than 1 game at the time. There's no way the entirety of Naughty Dog is working on Factions, and no way all of Sucker Punch is working on the alleged stand-alone expansion.

Do we need more of these threads? What kind of fucking discussion is there to have?

That's great news. More people are able to enjoy these awesome games. Win win for everyone.

Keep going with your little crusade tho, the greens will jump at the chance to join you with their fake outrage and polls. They love you now.

Well, Horizon is literally a last gen game built on the same engine and it will still end up taking 5 years if it misses this holiday season which they themselves said is a real possibility. Even if it comes out in November, thats only 3 months shy of 5 years.

GoW 2 another last gen sequel is also going to end up taking at least 4 years if it comes out in Spring. 4.5 years if its a holiday 2022 title. Same goes for GT7.

And none of these games are utilizing the SSD or the CPU or any of the new primitive or mesh shader stuff that UE5 games are going to be using. So what's going to happen when they finally ship their games in 2022 and realize their engines need to be retooled, and their game design needs to account for the CPU and SSD improvements. They have basically been making PS3 games all this time. Just bigger and more open. With the CPU and SSD, game design will change which means rethinking game development which will take at the very least just as much time as the PS4 sequels did. 4-5 years minimum. Which means we are looking at 2025-2027 for studios that ship games in late 2021 and early 2022.

These games are all coming out very soon. The plan seems to have been some PS5 only games, and the games which cost a large amount, make multiplatform until the instal base gets higher. Unless you want Sony to lose money for console war resins this make perfect sense. All of those games were aiming for this year.

Yep, the blonde shithead already cross-fucked more than half of their best teams and we are not gonna have proper nextgen games from them until 2025-2026.

For people who actually cares about playing proper ps5 exclusives in their fucking ps5 console this is the worst timeline possible.

You have no idea what you’re talking about. If you really think these teams have stayed the same size and are not working on multiple projects at staggering release schedules you’re kidding yourself. No one is gonna wait till 2026 for the best teams to release PS5 only games. That’s literally when the PS6 will be rumored. We’ve already had 5 PS5 only games.

You really think we're not going to see any 1st-party PS5-only titles till 2025 at the earliest?

That's an uberly-pessimistic take I can't get on board with.

In the clouds...
No concerns here. I just want them to expand the daily race options in GT7. If GT7 is basically just GT sport but with the added features (ray tracing, fast loading, etc) I'm okay. I don''t think any expansion of GT7 will be that huge of an impact on the game being cross gen. More tracks, more cars? I think the PS4 can handle it.

I recall someone requesting multiclass racing similar to iRacing but I'm not sure if it would be a hugely desired feature. The only thing the PS4 would struggle with if they wanted to expand online player count from 20 players to more. Just give me a pretty GT7 with quick loading and an expanded daily race set and I'll be happy.

For the next 2-3 years you can tell what games Sony expect to be blockbusters, they will be on the PS4 too.

Yeah this is understandable and not a big deal currently. As we transition to more complex and simulated worlds the last gen consoles will be left behind.

Only fiends who spent $800+ on ps5s for every room in their house are pissed about this.
only idiots who understand absolutely nothing about game development are ok with this. Xbox studies had been working on increasing the scalability of their engine because they had clear direction whereas PlayStation studios were not. H:FW developer said "almost all feature still made it" which means at the very least some mechanics were cut for cross-gen parity. Its not a small ditch, there is wide crater of performance difference between PS4 and PS5's core hardware.

Not Naughty Dog too.
Unless the game they are talking about is the Factions expansion.

I really wanted Naughty Dog to show us what they can do sooner rather than later.

Please let PSX actually have a PS5 only first party game, even if they say its only coming out Holiday 2022.
<---Prays stock is in order so he can actually try said nextgen games.,

Grand Turismo isn't a system seller like it was 10-15 years ago. I think it's still popular but more niche IMO. Globally it used to sell what 15-20 million? Last GT was what 7 million?

It breaks my heart to see Santa Monica limited to Jaguar Cores. Why Jimbo Why?
Avatar devs just went on record about how next gen SSDs and GPUs are integral to the GAME DESIGN as well as graphical rendering.

on flying while maintaining the high visual quality.

It's not just that the world needs to look good as you lazily soar over it – it's that it needs to stay looking good while you travel very, very quickly, as Jansén explains: "You're flying at enormous high speeds on a Banshee over this very, very detailed landscape. It doesn't matter how much we can render, unless we can stream it in as fast when we're moving very fast from one place to another. So just this shift to these newer hard drives, it can't be underestimated because, and it really has a lot of implications."

On Map Design. Turns out last gen games were so large with sparse areas because they were used to hide loading screens.

"It's not just the old 'I'm taking this slow walk as I enter into the place because we have to stream everything in'," explains Jansén of the benefits to his maps, "it's little subtle things that people don't think about, which is how close together are all the places in the world. If you look at, with the old hard drives, they had to be spaced out very far [apart], because you had to stream out the old and stream in the new, so it just created a formulaic world. So, there's a ton of stuff like that."

On CPUs and GPUs allowing advanced NPC behavior and physics.
Stefanov steps in to show us exactly what that can mean: "I can give you a specific example of something that you see in the trailer that has to do with the AI systems. For the big creatures, whenever they are calm, they would obviously walk around trees and things like that. But when they are fleeing, or attacking you, or whatever, they will just go straight through the bamboo and other vegetation and just completely destroy it. I think it's really cool to be able to see all of these effects that the NPCs have on the environment, as well as you having an effect on the environment too."

We are not gonna see any of that in the next Horizon or God Of War or Ghost of Tsushima or Factions and thats just depressing.

Dude, if santa monica and guerrilla release their big heavy hitters in 2021-2022, do you think that they can make gow 3 or horizon 3 (or gt8) in 1-2 years? think again.

Slimy was pretty clear in his OP about what the team are doing right now, sure they can have secondary projects, but the big hitters on ps5 only are years and years away.
