So what exactly X-tended Dynamic Range does? The explanation on the menu just says darker balcks and brighter whites, is that it?
Brighter whites. It's like a reverse local dimming - it improves contrast. I have mine off for SDR content because the picture looks more accurate. In HDR, it should be enabled.

Is this something you'll have to do every time a HDR source comes up or can it be configured to do it automatically?

got my 49" on monday. amazing display, really glad i ended up going for it. luckily i've seen no stuck pixels or DSE and the backlight uniformity is quite good. playing re7 in hdr for the first time was a revelation. 120Hz on pc is smooth as hell and feels amazing; the motion handling in general on this set is the best i've ever seen on a LED. feels ever so slightly more sluggish than my last screen, but its not an issue at all for console/pad play and 120Hz negates the issue on pc.

just a couple questions: i noticed quite a bit of blooming on dark screens while playing certain games in hdr. is this a noticeable issue when watching 21:9 films (light bleeding into the black bars)?

is there any difference in latency between graphics and game mode? as far as i can tell, the only actual difference is the default settings, with color and brightness being pushed a bit higher in game mode.

finally, is there an easier way to force windows 10 to default to my custom 120Hz res when a program or desktop switches to 1080p? right now i'm having to set the desktop refresh rate first by opening display settings, then adapter properties, click list all modes, find the 120Hz res, confirm, then i can launch the game. About 90% of the games i've tested will correctly use the desktop's refresh when i go through that process, but it's a bit of a pain to do every time when i keep the desktop at 4k60. using an rx480 with the latest crimson software.

According to some folks on AVS this sale is only going today and tomorrow. I'd guess BF will take it back to this level if not $100-150 cheaper.

I'm still pondering, that's a chunk of change still.
I'm in the same boat. I was planning to pull the trigger on the 75" in November, but with the Amazon price drop to $3000 I may just buy it now. With Chase credit card purchase protection (max $500) using ebuyusa as a reference that would bring it down to $2500.

Where are you seeing on AVS forums that the price could go lower on Black Friday?

That was speculation on my part. What I saw on AVS was that the drop to $3000 was only going to be for two days.

And just like that, it's down to $2,998 on Amazon. Time to make some decisions.
Funny, I was at Best Buy looking at this TV last Friday, and I overheard a Geeksquad (or Sony rep) tell a customer that this size was going on sale this past Sunday.

This TV looks amazing for the price. I’m seriously looking at the 49” just for gaming.

a strange issue has started happening to me in the last few days. i have my pc (RX480) hooked up to hdmi 2 and ps4 pro on 3, both running 4k60 4:4:4 full RGB. for the last 3 days straight i use both inputs for a few hours in the evening, then at some point i'll turn off the tv and come back a few minutes later, turn it on and get no signal from the pc on hdmi 2.

at that point, plugging the pc into hdmi 3 gives me a signal. plugging the ps4 into hdmi 2 gives me a signal. turning enhanced hdmi off gives me a pc signal on hdmi 2 again, albeit at ycc 4:2:0. every time it happened i was unable to get a signal from my pc with enhanced hdmi on on port 2 until i turn it off and try again in the morning, or do a full power cycle and reset.

i've observed this behavior with 2 different 18gbps cables. replicating the issue with pc on hdmi 3 is my next step, but i'm having a hard time isolating this as a problem with the tv or the gpu.

Getting a weird audio issue with the PS4. Playing destiny and all audio is delayed by about a half a second to a second. Checked it on the system menu with same problem. Just shut down the PS4 all the way to see if that fixes the issue. TV audio is working fine on all other inputs.

Edit* Rebooting PS4 fixed the delay.

I had that happen with destiny too. I’d jump in a puddle and it would delay the splash sound. The annoying thing that’s been happening to me is that for no reason, audio will switch from audio system to tv speakers. No idea why.

Also asked this question in the general UHDTV thread where I got some great help and advice. I thought I might post here too since there are a lot of XE9005 users here and maybe you've had the same dilemma :)

Currently I'm really liking what I see with the 65XE9005. The direct led, black levels, natural colors etc. The big competitor for me is the Samsung Q7F. This set is €500.- more expensive (with current cashback deals) and the main thing this set has is an input lag of 24ms over 34ms on the Sony. Did any of you face this same choice? And what was your decision?

The Qled is very bright but I don't know if I like the screen better than the Sony. The thing that worries me most is the slightly higher input lag of 34ms.

So, not taking the slightly higher price into account, would you go for the XE9005 (X900E) over the Samsung Q7F?

Thanks!

Haven't had experience with the Sammsung model, but ive been playing CoD:IW and i do not notice lag. 34ms is perfectly fine even for twitch shooters like CoD. Tried Star Wars BF and i did not notice any lag again.

As for the picture, many reviews claim that the X9005E has better picture than the qled.

Wow, black bars are a real cancer in HDR movies ... Frankly seen the blooming of crazy, I prefer to limit watching the SDR version ...

The HDR is definitely something for high-end full-led TVs or OLED ...
I’ve seen some on the 900e, but for gaming it’s absolutely gorgeous. Uncharted: Lost Legacy, The Surge, even the Forza 7 demo are all jaw dropping.

Is the 900e's 5ghz signal garbage for anyone else? It struggles between 480p and 720p in netflix. The entry level sharp its replacing had no problem with 5ghz, and now I moved the sharp to a spot twice as far from the router now and the 5ghz speed is still killing sony's.

Thankfully the 2.4ghz signal is good enough for 4k but now I have to worry about 2.4ghz congestion.

I saw some people playing games in Cinema Pro mode because of the better motion handling. An input lag of 105ms seems way too much for me though. How is the motion handling in game mode (compared to a Qled)? Is the picture still great or do you notice a lot more judder?

You dont need to use CinemaPro mode to get better motion handling/reduced blur. You can stick to game/graphics mode and just add black frame insertion and raise backlight illumination a bit. This will preserve low input lag.

I agree but for movies with blacks bar is not good... :(

I use subtitle so its even worse in dark scenes with a ultra big blooming...
I'm surprised isn't the local dimming supposed to help with this? Or is it due to not having many zones.

I have a Tcl p series and letterboxs are a nice inky black with local dimming turned on.

So I just got the 65" version a few weeks and while it's great, I've just recently (within the past week), noticed some white spots flickering whenever my ps4 pro switches to HDR mode (which it also seems to automatically do for netflix for some reason??). Quite noticeable during particularly dark moments on screen. The pro is going through a Pioneer receiver, so I tried connecting directly to the TV and noticed the white flickering spots disappeared. I went into the settings of the HDMI output on the receiver the pro is on and noticed it's set to 4:4:4, I switched it to 4:2:2, but then everything was washed out when the pro went to HDR mode. So I then switched the receiver back to 4:4:4, and over the last day or so I've noticed the white spots have disappeared, though I suspect the problem may crop up again.

I'm not too used to tinkering with all these settings, so I've left my PS4 video output to auto, which I think is for the best? I've noticed if I set it to YUV420 for HDR content the white spots do not show up as well. Only in RGB or auto mode do they have a tendency to show up when passing through the receiver. I guess I'd just like to hear some of your thoughts or if any of you have experienced similar issues.

Wondering if anyone can speak to why when I set HDR to 'on' in-game (Uncharted 4: Lost Legacy, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Last of Us Remastered), the screen goes black for a few seconds, and the picture looks much more washed out (ie. flat colours) than when I have HDR set to 'off' in-game, both on the PS4 home screen and the game itself.

When I close the application, the screen goes black for a few seconds, and the PS4 home screen doesn't look washed out any more.

I followed TheWirecutter settings for what it's worth

Code:
Settings>External Inputs>HDMI signal format>Enhanced format

Picture Mode: Custom
Light Sensor: Off,
Auto picture mode: Off,
Black Adjust: Off,
Adv. Contrast Enhancer: Off,
Auto Local Dimming: High,
X-tended Dynamic Range: On,
Color Temprature: Expert 1,
Live Color: Off,
Noise Reduction: Off,
Smooth Gradation: On,
Motionflow: True Cinema,
CineMotion: High

Sony X900E HDR: Picture Mode: Cinema Pro, remaining settings from above

rtings got a new input lag tester and 1080p120Hz has a respectable 16.9ms. very nice for anyone who is into competitive pc games.

i'd also add that, while i've heard some complaints about it, i love the perfect, cripsy 1:4 pixel scaling at 1080p. i'm definitely not seeing the 'softer, more jagged upscaling' in 120Hz that rtings claims. switching between 60 and 120 has made no difference in PQ from my testing

The black out is due to switching from non-HDR to HDR..

Also, HDR is not about adding saturation to color, rather it's about adjusting the whole image to 'accurately' represents 'real' life in terms of lighting and darkness..

Thus whatever color tuning you did on the TV will be off when HDR is on.

There's no RGB for HDR (yet)...it will switch to YUV420 when HDR is enabled.

okay, so this is really strange. today i switched to 120Hz on my pc and right away i saw the 'softer' scaling that rtings was talking about. something has definitely changed because i did extensive testing when i first set it up and until this point i did not see any difference at all between the 60Hz and 120Hz modes - perfect 1:4 scaling for both. the change has been immediately noticeable.

update: did a full power down and restart and it went back to normal. bizarre.

Since no one is responding in the x800d thread is anyone having problems with 1440p with a pc hooked up? All 4 inputs, different hdmi cords, no 1440p option in windows or nvidia control panel, and there used to be. Forcing custom resolution with nvidia control panel I can only get a 30hz refresh rate.

I was under the impression that all PS4 games supported HDR but that seems not to be the case? Playing Rocket League the TV doesn't indicate HDR but if I fire up TLoU it switches on.

Shame :(

No, it was never all games. Just those where devs implemented it. You can find the full list in the ~"Pro compatibile games" thread here on GAF.

Don’t really see it doing much for a game like Rocket League. Even lot of newer games don’t support it yet. (Ahem...destiny)

The price for the (49) X9005 is (UK) dropping pretty fast, think it will get closer to £1000 this November? Anyone in the UK TV business know?

So 2 days ago, I bought the XBR55X900E ($1799 BestBuy in Winnipeg), took it home and stuck it on the wall. My wife and I sit about 13-15' away, so I found it too small (she didn't), so I took it back today and got the 65" version ($2499), which is just perfect. 75" would be even better, but it is a little over my budget.

WOW! I mean, the reviewers all say this is the best TV to buy this year, but this thing really DOES rock!

I have mine hooked up to my PS4 Pro, so obviously the first thing I did was set it up for 4k and HDR and load up Horizons: Zero Dawn and run around a little bit in that, and I must say that it just blows you away at how awesome it looks in 4k and HDR. WOW! (Game Mode) Plus I found it playable at 15' away, vs the 55", which was nice.

I then loaded up Netflix and tried out a few movies in 4k (House of Cards and Planet Earth 2) and these movies both look awesome as well. I like how you don't get black crush or blobby blacks and how awesome the colors are overall. (Cinema Home).

I next loaded up YouTube and looked up some of the 4k and 4k/HDR content, and tossed that on their. It looked amazing as well. I would love to see some good Ultra-HD Blu-Rays as they should be better, but I will have to wait.

Next up, I tried out plain old Shaw Cable via coax, so 480i (if that) and I have to say that this TV does a way better job of upconverting that POS signal than any other TV I have seen in the last 15 years, aside from old Tube/CRT TV's. The picture actually looks pretty decent. I need to upgrade to a Shaw HD Box in the near future.

The sound is ok so far, but I will probably end up buying a sound bar for under the TV, as I don't want to hook up the stereo in my current condo.

I have not really played much with the Sony Android box, except to setup my Gmail Account and 4k. I plan on doing the optimizations that people are speaking about on that, so can't really comment on that aspect of the TV.

I have also not done any color optimizations yet either, I hope next week to have time to do some of those.

Input Lag:
I didn't really notice any input lag on Horizons Zero Down or Bloodborne. For the record, most of my gaming is done on a killer gaming PC with an awesome monitor, so I would most likely notice it (Acer XB270HU 144hz 1440p Gsynch) and a 7700k/1080Ti.

Internet:
I am using Shaw Cable 75Mbps connection, however I was watching YouTube and Netflix through the PS4 Pro's 5Ghz WiFi connection, and it streamed 4k fine. This means I can't comment on the quality of Netflix/YouTube/Amazon from within the TV's android box or its own WiFi itself. Will test that out in the future. I plan to get a 1Gbps Powerline Adapter in the near future and hook it up to that though as I hate using WiFi for things.

VERY happy with this TV so far after only about 10 hours of use. Hopefully I didn't buy a dud.

Do people recommend I get the extra warranty? I have 30 days to decide at BestBuy, but it is expensive... had though to maybe get the 2 year at least ($350), as electronics usually fails in the first year or stays good for a long time. My problem is with the heat in these Android Box portion of this thing killing it in the future...

So a new update came out for the X55900E on October 3rd but I can't get my TV to find the update. I have two X55900E's and one of them found the update right away/yesterday and I updated it. However my other TV didn't have the automatic prompt when turning on the TV, said it was up to date when I searched for a new update and nothing happens when I plug in the USB Drive with the update file on it. I have checked the firmware version and the one that wont update is running on the previous version.

I was wondering if anyone has a solution to this?

Also, I can't get either TV to play video files via USB either, don't know what I am doing wrong here.

Anyone have experience watch 4K HDR movies from the Google Play Movies and TV store?

I recently got the 930e (posting here due to the similarities with the 900), and it came with an offer to buy a free movie from the Google play store. I watched Spider-man: Homecoming last night, and it looked great in 4k, but was not in HDR (or at least I don't think it was). There has no HDR icon in the settings menu, nor did the settings themselves reflect that the TV was in HDR. I didn't find any settings within the app for this either.

When I watch HDR content on other Android TV apps, such as Netflix or Amazon, the picture settings menu has an HDR icon, and the settings themselves (as well as the great picture) reflect that it is in HDR mode.

I've used the rtings.com setup guide for the tv, with HDR set to auto.

Is getting a A/V receiver the best option for adding more 4K/HDR compatible devices?
The standard HDMI ports just aren't enough for me, especially with XBX coming out.

Your other option is an HDMI switch. Not many support full 4k/HDR at 60HZ (beware of many that claim to support 4K). I got this one:

https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=21614

I already had a good receiver, it just didn't support 4K/HDR and didn't seem justified to spend money on a whole new receiver, so I got this.

If you don't already have a decent receiver, though, then go that route.

Wait...are you saying that this device just hooks up to a A/V Receiver that doesnt support 4K/HDR and makes it so... or you just hook it to the HDTV and it uses it's speakers...?

No, it's just an HDMI switch. So, I have a bit of a complicated setup. I have my PS4 and 4K Blu-ray plugged into this for video and this is plugged into my HDMI2 port on the TV. For audio, my 4K Blu-ray player has a separate audio-only hdmi out that I have going to my receiver and my PS4 is connected to my receiver with optical cable.

I like positive impressions that people are giving this tv. If I could afford it I'd probably go all in. But does it bother anyone else that Sony isn't supporting dolby vision? Maybe they can patch it in sometime down the road.
Honestly, HDR10 alone looks so good, I can live without DV. It may be a bit better, but the difference between HDR10 and DV is not as dramatic as going from sdr to hdr.

So I have this TV and I love it, but I had a huge bug today that I found the solution to, so I figured I would let you guys know in case it happens to you.

The HBO GO app is bugged at the moment (at least for me), and if you change the input from the app, it stops all sound coming from inputs. I tested it with my Pc, switch and PS4.

The way to fix it is that when your done with HBO GO, you click back on the remote until you get to the home screen and the app closes down, then change input.

Apparently the app doesn’t close or something and it messes with the sound of the tv.
