Sony's focus on multiplayer is dissapointing

In what area of human history have people found a more effective investment and not pursued it? Or rather, who found a more effective investment, ignored it, and passed on their genes?

Naughty Dog reached a certain level of success with Crash Bandicoot. They wanted more.

You're making the same mistake as the rest.

In finding a new more lucrative investment and pursuing it, YOU DON'T HAVE TO abandon all your existing investments.

You keep investing in what's given you success thus far (i.e. long-term growth investing), while jumping on the back of the latest cash cow (i.e. short-term value investing) to milk that bugger dry.

It's not a "one or the other" scenario. Sony can and always will do both.

Don't know If OP is serious.

On PS3 you got Socom, MAG and Warhawk. Big Focus on mp.

On PS4/PS5 we got what??🤔🤔

As a mainly multiplayer gamer - I really hope Sony is investing in multiplayer games. We need a Halo: Infinite competitor on PlayStation.

Let's just wait and see how these new projects turn out. Didnt firesprite acquire/absorb some kind of other studio? Arent they at 240+ employees? Sony just made that purchase so they must feel pretty good about whatever multiplayer project they're working on. That's a pretty large head count too, definitely speaks to the level of confidence.

The dial is turned until the dial is turned off.

Sony's dial went from 10 (single player) 0 (multiplayer) last gen. They've now turned the dial to around 6 (single player) 4 (multiplayer) in terms of their investments for the early PS5 generation.

They are constantly assessing which way to turn that dial. If that 4 (multiplayer) outproduces that 6 (single player) over the next 5 years, you'd have to admit that they'll likely turn the dial towards multiplayer even further.

Look at Days Gone. A profitable game according to one of its lead game directors. Yet, Sony cancelled Days Gone 2 development and now Sony Bend is working on a new IP with a multiplayer component.

Success and profit are all relative. These companies have a finite amount of resources. They're not going to spend those resources on games that project to make less money.

Ya'll better hope Factions 2 flops because if it hits big (admittedly a big if), Naughty Dog will have jumped from making 3D Platformers to 3rd Person Narratives to Online multiplayer.

You said all that to basically say nothing at all.

This is the worst example of a non sequitur logical fallacy I've seen on Gaf.

"Bu-bu-bu-stuff happened... therefore Sony will make exclusively MP games only from now on".... lol wut?

Firesprite adquired Fabrik, a smaller studio that did work with them in 3 games. Like them, they had former Liverpool Studio, Evolution and Bizarre Creations staff. They are over 260 people now and have 40 open job positions, will be over 300 people soon.

They are working on a storytelling focused narrative adventure AAA game, a VR action adventure of 'one of the most original and successful multimillion selling console IP titles in the last 10 year' (rumored to be an Horizon VR game) that can be another game or not and a AAA PvP GaaS shooter new IP. They are also making a game with Fabrik that can be one of these projects.

Bullshit, Sony always published multiplayer games, or at least games with multiplayer. They will continue doing so, but hey will continue on single player focused game.

Look at Days Gone. A profitable game according to one of its lead game directors. Yet, Sony cancelled Days Gone 2 development and now Sony Bend is working on a new IP with a multiplayer component.
They didn't cancel its sequel, they didn't greenlight it maybe because they prefered to have now a new IP instead. They may do Days Gone 2 later. Btw, Days Gone originally was planned to have multiplayer with your bike gang, but it was cut to release the game on time. They moved it to the pitch of the sequel. Their new IP is going to be an open world game built on top of what they did for Days Gone.

Success and profit are all relative. These companies have a finite amount of resources. They're not going to spend those resources on games that project to make less money.
Profit is profit, there can be more or less, and there can be loses. It isn't relative. Sony is selling more consoles and games than they ever did, generating more revenue and profit that they ever did, and they are doing that focusing on single player games and leaving the multiplayer to the 3rd partis because the best selling console MP games are multis who are mostly played on PS (Fortnite, GTA, FIFA, CoD...). So they will continue with this strategy. Their current strategy that they have been having for many years also includes some MP games even if they are focused on single player games they always also released some MP games. And some of these SP games have a secondary MP game mode. They will continue doing that.

Ya'll better hope Factions 2 flops because if it hits big (admittedly a big if), Naughty Dog will have jumped from making 3D Platformers to 3rd Person Narratives to Online multiplayer.
Not happening. Factions 2 was the game mode they always had in the TLOU and Uncharted games, but this time it went out of scope, it was too ambitious so they decided to move it to a separate game. They have this project, the U4+ULL remasters and the TLOU1 remake made by the other San Diego team at least originally planned to be bundled with TLOU2 PS5. They were supposed to be working with Bend in an Uncharted spinoff that we don't know if it ended canned or not. After these secondary projects Naughty Dog will continue focused on single player focused narrative games. Pretty likely with a new IP and TLOU3 as their next big ass projects.

Impressive list at first glance, but how many of those are actual shooters, you know, the type of game most people think of when they say MP game? Only KZ:SF and UC4 are knowo to have the MP part, and those are the early PS4 titles, from there on it was all just CoD, BF, Fortnite, Destiny, GTA5 etc. with no alternatives at all from Sony. But Hulst already addressed that they have a lot of MP titles in the working for the PS5.

It is but the whole industry is shifting towards multiplayer because it's cheaper and a more reliable way of milking gamers.

It's not their fault, it's gamers fault that get addicted to single games, play them for thousand of hours and use to replace IRL social interactions, therefore ending up spending a LOT of money on their passes and MTXs

Sony gives its studios lots of creative freedom, so if they want to continue working on AAA games, they will. These acclaimed studios won't suddenly decide that they no longer interested in single-player, there are plenty of developers there who came to work at these studios precisely for that. They are growing fast and many will be able to produce both MP and SP projects...

I also feel like, if MP is very successful, it is incredibly profitable, but failure rate is also pretty high. The only outright failure in this gen of PS seems DAS...

But it is also very naive to think that TLOU MP's failure would mean the end of their attempts to create multiplayer. The hope is that at least one of these projects works out, and if it really fires up, it will be all worth it.

Me, I'd like to see something more original than yet another shlooter MP... Something like Legends, or something really crazy. Maybe even MMO or AAA Animal Crossing-like (that doesn't look like it's for 5 year olds), or better yet something no one of us could think of.

Anyone reading the following post is encouraged to play this song in unison:

Profit is profit.

Woefully inaccurate. Big profit is, and always has been, more important than small profit for commercial enterprise.

David Jaffes style God of War action games made PlayStation a lot of money. They could have continued making those types of games but SSM went to PlayStation executives and said "What if we made an Uncharted style God of War game and it sells 18 million copies?" Do you think we're going to see an old school God of War anytime soon? Of course not.

Respawn Entertainment made two single player focused Titanfall games (both profitable). Then they made Apex Legends. Do you think we're going to get Titanfall 3 anytime soon? No. These companies ALWAYS follow the larger profit.

Sony isn't going to abandon single player but they are going to do what they've always done, and that's follow the larger profits.

AAA single player is getting so expensive that greenlighting sure fire hits is the only strategy that makes sense. Lower tier, riskier type AAA is going the way of the dodo. That wasn't the case 5+ years ago.

...therefore Sony will make exclusively MP games only from now on".... lol wut?

You're like Sam Darnold. You're seeing ghosts out there. This conversation has got you seeing things I never said or implied.

The dial is turning at PlayStation. They'll adjust depending on what makes the most sense each year. I strongly suspect that the dial gets turned towards multiplayer over the next 5 years.

PlayStation is now flush with those types of games in the works. The level of multiplayer investment has skyrocketed since Mr. Worldwide Jim Ryan and God King Herman Hulst took over. You love to see it.

Ok, so even in the face of evidence to challenge your view point you decide to cherrypick the data and rather insist on your own fictional narrative.

Carry on then. You do you...

Yes, big profit is better than smaller profit. They do make way more profit than before. And well, they now make profit.

Everybody agrees that GoW 2018 was a masterpiece and the right way to refresh GoW. The series needed that because GoW Ascension felt outdated and stagnant.

Respawn Entertainment made two single player focused Titanfall games (both profitable). Then they made Apex Legends. Do you think we're going to get Titanfall 3 anytime soon? No. These companies ALWAYS follow the larger profit.
Titanfall 3 doesn't exist because Titanfall 2 tanked hard in sales.

Sony isn't going to abandon single player but they are going to do what they've always done, and that's follow the larger profits.
Yes, they will follow the larger profits which means to continue with their current strategy because it's the one that gave them larger profits and more importantly, larger revenue for any platform holder in gaming history. And that strategy is to make money mostly from 3rd party sales on their consoles, so they will try to sell as much consoles as possible, and they will try it with mainly exclusive games, which mostly will continue being single player focused games but they will -as always- make multiplatform games.

And will continue having secondary growth channels as mobile games, streaming (with the long term goal they set in early 2014 of making it available everywhere), VR, movies using their IPs and some PC ports. And well, they'll continue growing their internal development teams and acquiring more and to combine that with 2nd and 3rd party exclusives trying to cover a very wide amount of game types.

This strategy has been their strategy since before Jimbo and Hulst got their current position, they only pushed a bit harder in some of these areas.

AAA single player is getting so expensive that greenlighting sure fire hits is the only strategy that makes sense. Lower tier, riskier type AAA is going the way of the dodo. That wasn't the case 5+ years ago.

You're like Sam Darnold. You're seeing ghosts out there. This conversation has got you seeing that I never said or implied.

No, they are dominating more than ever and they continue with the same strategy they had years before.

They'll adjust depending on what makes the most sense each year.
No, big corporations plan their strategies looking at 5 or 10 years ahead. Specially in gaming, where AAA games need 4-6+ years of development.

I strongly suspect that the dial gets turned towards multiplayer over the next 5 years.
And here's the list of AA or AAA multiplayer focused games from that list...

Gran Turismo Sport

PlayStation is now flush with those types of games in the works. The level of multiplayer investment has skyrocketed since Mr. Worldwide Jim Ryan and God King Herman Hulst took over. You love to see it.
Sony invests less in multiplayer focused games because they are not as successful for them as single player focused games. This is why single player focused is and will continue being their priority and they left MP mostly for 3rd party since they dominate it, are mostly played on PS and Sony gets 30% of that.

Wolverine, DS DC and GoT DC (SP focused) and Jade Raymond's game (MP focused) I think are the only project we know that are greenlighted by them. All the other ones we know and saw were already greenlighted before they joined their current position in late 2019 or will continue the same path these studios already had. We know Housemarque will now a AAA biger than Returnal but we don't know if will be SP or MP focused. If it's a Returnal sequel, we may assume it's SP. Same goes with Deviation's game, we can assume it may be MP focused but we don't know it and this summer we knew they had been working with Sony for more than a year. So pretty likely before Hermen got in charge at the end of 2019.

We know Days Gone was going to feature a secondary MP as usual in Sony AAA games. It was cut and moved to its sequel that wasn't greenlighted to be developed now, but it was greenlighted an open world new IP that would use what they built for Days Gone, so probably will be focused on SP but will have secondary MP.

All the other ND, SSM, San Diego, Insomniac, Pixel Opus, Media Molecule, Firesprite, Team Asobi, Polyphony, Guerrilla, Kojipro games were under development when they joined this job position or will continue doing the same type of games they did until now, most of them SP focused by many of them with SP elements.

You listed a bunch of indie games and single player games with side multiplayer modes in an attempt to prove that old Sony is investing in multiplayer at the same rate as new Sony.

I'll take the L on that, I guess.

What "current strategy" are you talking about. The PlayStation that saw record profits is the result of old regime PlayStation (Shawn Layden). PlayStation focused on single player games and quirky Japanese games under his leadership. New regime PlayStation (Jim Ryan + Herman Hulst) is striking multiplayer deals all over the place, and they don't seem particularly interested in Japan.

Strategies have obviously changed. Why would Sony change strategies so drastically if they were happy with current "record profits"?

Because Sony doesn't see the market the way you "Single Player Forever" zealots do. Neither do I.

It wasn't me that listed the games, but regardless MP games are MP games.

Arbitrarily discounting games as MP just because the studio that made them isn't owned by a publishing monolith or because the game happens to come with a SP campaign (as does most COD titles for that matter), is a dumb way to try to construct a coherent argument.

Exactly. Playstation under Layden was successful mainly because it was 100$ cheaper at launch, plus MS totally screw up their launch badly with retarded policies, and the rest is just history. But if anyone follows Sony's financial reports knows that PS+ is the biggest revenue contributor, and people don't but PS+ for any of Sony's games. DLC and MTX also largely contribute to the revenue as well. And Sony aren't blind or dumb, they see where the real money is. The whole market is moving to Gaas/F2P games, and if Sony want's to be a top dog in the game they have no choice but to follow the trends, otherwise they'll be left behind.

Sony's been outselling Xbox hardware pretty much globally 2:1. What's MS's excuse this time then?

Exactly. Playstation under Layden
Just a heads up, Layden was never CEO of PlayStation.

Kaz replaced Ken, then Andrew House took over from Kaz, and then John Kodera ran PlayStation for a year until Jimbo became CEO. Layden replaced Jack Tretton as head of SCEA (old PlayStation's American division, ran regional sales & marketing, etc) then replaced Shu Yoshida as head of 1st party studios in 2016. Then quit.

But if anyone follows Sony's financial reports knows that PS+ is the biggest revenue contributor,
Actually its micro transactions (& DLC) that are PlayStation's largest source of revenue.

Then games is the 2nd largest segment. Services are usually 3rd or 4th, and have been below hardware since PS5 shipped.

I have always hated multiplayer games but in recent years found it a good medium to connect with old friends or make new ones.
A cinematic AAA MP experience might be something that would catch people by surprise.

I'm not really sure they need an "excuse" when the consoles are selling out the moment they hit the shelves... But they did upgrade xCloud to XSX hardware, so that ate up some of the supplies that could've otherwise be sold to the customers.

So still everything MP-related. And keep in mind those numbers are only the 30% cut from 3rd parties they get, so it's more than obvious they want to chase the full 100%.

Again, I'll take the L on that.

We're discussing level of commitment to multiplayer and the list was filled with indie games and single player games with low investment side modes tacked on.

Clearly I was wrong and all games should be looked similarly despite how much of an investment was put into the multiplayer.

I appreciate the maturity of your response (it's actually very refreshing to see here in Gaf) and I apologise if it felt I was piling on.

So still everything MP-related. And keep in mind those numbers are only the 30% cut from 3rd parties they get, so it's more than obvious they want to chase the full 100%.
Yup.

That's the trend to maximize profits. For third party, it's mtx, DLC and digital sales will be better than store copies because they dont have to go go through the hassle of plastic cases and inventory. More more digital the better.

For first party, it's the same + 30% digital store cuts from third party + MP and sub plans.

SP games are one and done. Sure, some will have mtx, but how many gamers playing SP focused games break out the credit card and pay mtx money? Probably not too many. The full SP campaign is there to play like normal.

MP is where the big money comes. Competitive mtx, cosmetic mtx, loot crates/ultimate team gambling etc... Put it this way. If this was decades ago, who would ever think some of the most profitable games out there would be free to download? Every gamer and game employee at head office would think you're nuts. "Free" would be maybe a shareware demo or something, but the money would come from selling $60 games at Walmart and EB.
