Soul Calibur V goes gold - New Vids, Screens

Well I'll still hold on to hope until we actually see them fighting. Besides, the different "leaks" about these guys have been conflicting a ton anyways. Some are saying they are all mimics who can use every style. Some are saying they are gender divided. Some are saying they use some styles not already present in the game. Some are saying they are like Necrid and amalgamations instead of mimics.

I still think there is too much up in the air (and I still hope they have unique movesets).

Reports aren't that conflicting. Male only mimic or unisex mimic, still a cheap mimic.
Don't hold unto hope as there isn't anything left to hope for.

I'm sorry I don't like to take rumours as fact, especially when they are based solely on forum posts with no images or videos to back them up. I am more than happy to accept that they both really are mimics, but not until I see videos.

I'm satisfied with the roster overall.

It would have been nice to have all of the old characters return, but I wasn't expecting it.

This applies to me too, whether Kilik and Elysium are mimics or not and if Omega Pyrrha has basically her same style again or not.

It would be silly for O. Pyrrha to have the same style and take up a character slot.

But if all of the styles are present, then people who like those characters have CaS to make them.

Whatever...I can't wait for the 31st. Going to be a Calibur Marathon.

Wait, how does everyone know those random picks are legitimate leaks? Has that gamefaqs poster been a reputable source before or something? That female is way too outrageous for it to be real, even for SC standards.

It looks pretty much like SC4 Sophie's outfit.

Same reason people knew the Ezio leak was legit. The art style.

Unless someone is skilled enough to copy Namco's artwork style and make two full artworks plus a two portraits matching the legit leak (a-Pat) from yesterday in less than 24 hours, these are real.

Right.

Don't worry, I'm sure someone will end up being low tier and then you can pick them.

Talim was viable in 2, which is when I got into the series. She was just plain awful in IV, with moves that were unsafe ON HIT.

1. That hasn't been confirmed one way or the other yet.

2. How do you know you won't like one of the new styles?

History. I actually played a large part of the roster, but for years in the neighborhood I was the Talim champ. If she's not in and at least viable, my interest in the game drops dramatically. IV really, really hurt the brand for me, and III being on PS2 only was stupid (GC user).

Been playing SC2 a lot this week...I miss best Talim. :(

Exactly. :(

I guess my point being is that there was some kind of artstyle or attire they had planned for Ivy with the leggings, thong/halfbra-onepiece, gauntlet, arm-stocking, etc. With this girl, it's just 2 pieces of cloth and a randomly placed mask.

God's only wear some clothes to cover up for us when they rather be naked. Obviously whats under their clothes would melt our minds.

Ok, but my point is that there are at least 4 or 5 all new styles in this game that you haven't even tried yet. There is at least a decent chance you may end up liking one of those. Moreover, since you played "a large part of the roster" even if your old main, Talim, ends up not being in the game there should still be plenty of characters you are familiar with, on top of the new ones.

Basically, I don't think you liking a game should hinge on one character. Ivy was my favourite in 2 but she completely changed after that game and I didn't enjoy her at all in 3 and 4. I dealt with it though and began playing Sophitia a lot and really enjoying her. I'm not sure who I'm going to play primarily yet in this one but the point is I'll figure it out. I like the Soul Calibur premise and engine. One character being in or out shouldn't really make a difference for anyone who has been following this series.

To me, it looks like SC4 Sophie's outfit made smaller.

Even the frills on the skirt are similar.

I've played Astaroth since SC1. I'm bummed he looks like he'll be way popular online based on his "stats." Really excited to find a second character to play.

Yay Kilik! Boo that he's just a Mokujin... especially since Edgemaster's already there. :|

Anyone have ideas for the OT title?

There's a video in the Famitsu site that shows a character who looks basically identical to the woman in that illustration, only without a helmet. It seems to be from a story scene though.

Scroll down bellow and watch the video around 3:00.

Damn, I stand corrected. But common, why would Namco have 3 mimic characters? I'm calling BS on that. It's TOO much of a rushed patch up job to actually be released in a game of such prestige.

Yeah even if they are still technically "clones", it would be better if they at least had their old shit instead of being crappier Edgemasters. Unless it is just that they can switch on the fly or took various moves from other characters...which would be pretty awesome.

Still mad that Talim or Yun isn't it but fuck it I don't buy fighting games for 1-2 characters. I'm sure I'll find someone awesome to play with.

I'm mad because the game was clearly rushed. No other way to slice it. They wanted to get the game in before SFxT and enough time to be considered for Evo and other majors. If rumors are true, the last 4 characters to be revealed are a re-used skin of Patroklos and Pyrrha, and 2 more mimics. This is while Zalsalamel, Talim, Setsuka, and Yun are not returning, or will only do so as DLC.

Will still buy the game, and even the DLC when it inevitably gets released, but damn you Namco! :shakes fist:

I wonder if absent characters who'se fight styles are in custom character mode will be allowed at tournies?

I personally don't see the problem. However, the Soul Calibur tournament community is incredibly ban-happy about random things (second only to the smash bros community) so I am betting all custom-only styles will be banned. (This is going to end up being even funnier if a mimic character can get the custom style randomly.)

uh, have you played soul calibur 4?

The Soul Calibur game that had no mimic characters at all???

What a bunch of whiners here, lol. You can make your own character.

Christ, does Namco employ ecchi/hentai artists to design their characters? This shit is ridiculous.

Dat ad. That's just silly.
I honestly wouldn't be surprised if a vast majority of Japanese videogame character concept artists have had experience or do side-projects that venture into the adult side of things. It's actually simpler to draw a character with less clothing since most artists have a fundamental understanding of anatomy.

They were never advertised as brand new characters integral to the lore of Soul Calibur. They were pretty much glorified character designs by a few popular artistis pasted onto the various models. Kilik and Boob Woman on the other hand shouldn't be judging by their prominence in the story, I doubt they'd simply paste them onto Edgemaster.

Huh... I remember them being advertised as standalone characters right before the game's release. People noticed that they seemed to be taking some animations from preexisting characters, but only noticed that they were completely unaltered movesets when the game was out.

Anyway, regarding these story characters... I do wonder how much this came from a rushed game and how much this came from actual odd design decisions.
The "cheap" characters all seem to be heavily story relevant, so they should be appearing in the story mode significantly. That means they were always intended to be in and people like Talim and Zasalamel were always intended to be cut. Now, a rushed game might be the reason that we got these "Edge Master-lite" movesets, but it's still kind of odd, especially if they're really leaving some pre-existing movesets out of the game.

So we should forgive the devs for being lazy? Wut?

Oh as opposed to bringing the same characters from game to game? I don't see a big difference no.

People end up playing as one or two styles and that's it. Gonna be the same for me. And if I don't like the look of a character, I can make one.

I think the problem most people had with this reveal was that Project Soul could have brought back many of the unique styles and characters ie: Zas (Scythe), Talim (Tonfa), Bangoo (Rock's son) but in the end refused to do so. It really pissed people off because 3 mimic characters are overly redundant and doesn't bring anything new to the playing field, people might use them in casual settings but i don't see these 3 characters being viable tournament choices, in a sense they are pretty much filler.

Considering when the game was first announced to be 17 years in the future and people weren't even sure how many old characters would be back (if any other than Siegfried and Mitsirugi), I would say it is pretty good that we have ALL of the old main character styles returning in some way except Talim's, Yun's, Zasalamel's, and Rock's. (Plus it is pretty likely some or all could be DLC) We could have gotten all new styles and that is what most people expected when the game was first announced. The fact that instead we got almost the opposite and are only missing 4 of the mainstays (while still gaining a handful of new ones) is pretty good. If the 3 mimic thing is true that is pretty dumb but we still did get most of the old styles plus new ones so I don't exactly feel that bad about it, nor do I think they could have "brought back many" much moreso than they already have.

TL;DR:

We Lose These Styles (Probably...for now)
Rock
Talim
Yun-Seong
Zasalamel

We Gain These Styles (at least)
ZWEI
Viola
Patroklos
Aeon (Basically new)
Dampierre (Might as well be new since it is his first competitive game)
Devil Jin

We Keep
All other past styles outside of Guest Characters

Plus, we still technically don't know the movesets for Elysium, Kilik, or Omega Pyrrah...or if there are more CaS only styles...or if there are actually any characters behind the tablet on row 3.

Overall I'd say that is pretty good. However you want to count the new styles as actually new or not, we overall made a profit on number of styles and there are still uncertainties concerning some characters.
