i agree with some of that, but its still really good stuff overall for me. I do think the sex scenes could be better instead of going back to the whore house over and over like they did.
 
I think the show transitioned well. I mean I was really worried at the beginning if it would work without Batiatus and his house, but after the dust settled and Spartacus's group found a permanent residence everything felt right again.

Maybe I'm not in the right mindset for it. I was drawn to it because I love gladiators and their cool outfits, but I stayed for the fantastic Andy and the rest of the great cast and the intrigues that really gripped me. I knew that I'd like it less outside of the ludus/arena. That I'm watching S1 at the same time probably doesn't help.

The pure hatred when Spartacus tries to rip out his chains and strangle Glaber, Solonius' slimy smile that makes you hate him in an instant, the Spartacus-Varo dynamic, the unforgetable "Eat. Rest. Etc" speech by Crixus, Gnaeus raping Pietro, seeing Ashur fucking someone over for the first time and making Batiatus kill Barca, the way Spartacus flips out when he hast to kill his best frien (and more than less the only human contact he has) after having his wife die in his arms...that stuff was really, really good. S1.5 was almost everything that made S1 great (minus Spartacus) condensed into six breathtaking episodes.

In S2, nothing really touches me emotionally (except for the killing of super cutie Aurelia) and half the actors annoy me to no end, topped off with more but worse action, sex and violence. It feels like somebody tried to emulate Spartacus but make it more edgy and turn it up to eleven while COD-fying it. At the same time.

Worst thing is that it's not shockingly bad. I could've written it off after the first few episodes (like lots of people did with Blood and Sand), but beneath all the bad CGI faces cut off, the silly looking "outdoor" environments, the shrieking Naveah, unkillable Egyptian ZOMGninjas and all that bad stuff are chunks off a really good story and characters that still interest me, so I have to force myself through the rest at least once.

Should've just made a bad guys spin off after Spartacus was already defeated with Lucretia, Ilithiya, Glaber and Ashur backstabbing each other, with some off the gladiators on the run or whatever.

Edit: Glaber and wife monster show was really, really good, for example.

I agree somewhat, particularly in regards to the intrigues. It's like they're setting up a single domino and then knocking it down an episode later, whereas in season 1 it felt like the dominoes were being very carefully placed into an elaborate pattern all season long, only to be knocked over in the last two or three episodes.

There are some truly great scenes in S2 though, even with the flaws. A few:
S2 SPOILERS
1. Ashur's brawl to prove himself to Glaber.
2. Spartacus and Gannicus fight
3. The brawl leading to the face slice...to get Agron's men in line.
4. Seppia's death...just wow.

seeing Glaber transform into a worthy villain has also been a highlight for me.
 
Season 2 is where the show started to feel more like a real series to me. Characters were a bit more important and the like, actions and words felt like they had more weight. It started off slow, but then the first two episodes of season 1 were awful enough to make me wonder if I should bother with the rest. I think its a step up despite the less ass-kicking moments.
 
So happy they left that temple. It's no House of Batiatus, that's for sure.

If the next episode is as good as "Kill Them All" then this show will be the king of season finales.

im cool with the new spartacus, i think he has as much charisma as other leading characters on the show. but andy was a fucking badass

i was just looking at season 1 trailer and goddamn. his death was highly unfortunate but he went out after being the lead in one of of the greatest television seasons ever produced. i didnt even think he was that good at first. i thought his take on the character was too reserved and brooding. i shortly thereafter realized he was fucking perfect.
 
Andy got better with each episode. I remember his acting was terrible on the first 2 or so episodes but he got really good afterwards. A real shame, he had so much potential.

Dwindling supplies and a superior Roman enemy brings the rebellion to its knees. Spartacus must restore hope to his people, as they careen towards their final confrontation with Glaber’s army.

I feel like this season has been a lot more laborious and uninspired than those of the past. The surprises, twists and turns etc don't seem to be as bold or exciting, and the general plot seems to be just prodding along on the same thing over and over.

Basically, they're on the run, Romans trying to catch them, every now and again Spartacus makes a speech to rally his people, fights some Romans etc. I feel like past seasons had you caring more for the different character branches, motivations etc. Whereas the one's here just feel too played out. Also feel like new Spartacus, whilst decent, doesn't have the emotional depth of old Spartacus (Andy).

I'm not feeling this episode at all.


Major spoilers ahead...


Ashur's death was fucking shitty. He deserved a better end than that semi-random bit. It seemed more like Naevia hyper-idealized fan service than anything else.
 
Overall, it was a blood bath.

Yet, I feel it was the blood bath that the NYT so mislabeled GOT as having. It was the empty meaningless kind of blood bath for the sake of blood bath. Heck, some of those blood baths were the results of characters doing incredibly uncharacteristic acts for the sake of blood bathing.
