Eh, Rome falls into the B-tier of HBO shows alongside things like Carnivale and Big Love. Compared to The Wire, Deadwood, The Sopranos, In Treatment, Curb or the better seasons of Six Feet Under it's nothing special.

Damn that was anti-climatic. Last minute helps a little, but huh.

Ashur, Glaber, RIGHT THERE. I was yelling at the tv for someone to stab them or something. Guh. Frustrating.

Two more episodes left? Fuuuuuugh. Feels like it is going to be ages till season 3.

WhatthefuckisthisIdon'teven...

Also, the writers are too attached to Ashur's wolf pack. Team Spartacus needed to cut down some of them to make the fight more interesting, but they just couldn't get rid of any of the cool characters.

Real spoilers.

This is what I was thinking. Its like they're saving everything for the last episode. Spartacus and Gannicus were the only two holding their own, which felt a little odd. That whole fight doesn't really do much but tell us what we already know, Glabur doesn't love Illitha, etc.

This snippet from review was, in my opinion, a valid point.

All of this makes her attempt to kill Ilithyia both understandable and completely gut-wrenching. The look Law gives when realizing how badly she’s misjudged Spartacus’ intent is devastating, conveying just how much connection she fears has been lost in a moment between them. And if Law rises to the occasion tonight, so too does Liam McIntyre, who honestly hasn’t been given many different notes and shades to play since leaving Capua early in the season. Yes, it’s jarring to see his face inserted into scenes from Blood and Sand while reliving his one night with Ilithyia. But seeing him struggle to stay righteous in the face of easy opportunity to balance the bloody scales with Glaber yields some of McIntyre’s best work of the year.

I have to agree. Liam was finally given some nuance to play with
and it was jarring to see him inserted into an Andy scene
. But he sold me this episode, he was anything but a one note this time. Leads me to believe he can pull off more than I thought he could.

Great episode. Ashur and his men are just beast; that "interrogation" scene. Ashur forcing himself on Lucretia shows his dominance on his former master

That final fight scene. So good. native American looking guy was badass

Damn good ep, even if I knew exactly how it would play out; Glaber no longer loves his wife, and Spartacus is no animal - he was never going to kill her.

I'm confused by Gannicus' stance though. He would be branded a traitor and dead man regardless of whether Spartacus decided to kill her or not...so why was he pissed? It's not like he could waltz back to Rome if Illythria had been killed.

Another great ep, I wonder what will Illythia do now.

And what's up with Crixus getting owned in every fight he's in? Hard to believe he was ever the champion of Capua. :P

He's content, happy, in love, whatever. Doesn't have that same killer edge he had when he was chasing glory, and then later Naevia. Could be a plot point next season.

Didn't see anything worthy to make into a gif from this episode.

Sad to see the Rome hate here though, its pretty awesome.

Show is playing it too safe now. Glaber should have been vanquished today. It was really ridiculous to watch 2 romans, and Ashur, together with 3 nameless henchmen, take down the three most powerful gladiators the arena has ever known.

Spartacus sucker punched by a small Roman? Gannicus preoccupied with one single opponent whereas he destroyed a dozens of them in single bouts before?
Really stupid.

They should have at least killed the two Romans and one of those gladiators. Thin there ranks and give the remaining ones names. It was scary to see Glaber's full army. How are they going to have enough people to fight him by the last episode?

I liked Spartacus in this episode, except for the flashbacks he had a perfect episode. Mira and Glaber also convinced. Ashur and Lucretia on the other hand are quickly losing plot importance.

The question remaining is: who will get Varianius to Capua for season 3? Shall it be Ilythea or Seppia? I believe the one to do it will be the one left for season 3. I'd prefer Seppia killed by Glaber.

Fuck, Saxa has a stunningly sexy midriff, one of my many weaknesses. Spoiled myself a tiny bit reading an Ellen Hollman interview, but I'm not even mad.

One minor thing about the pacing of this season that I am slightly irritated by, but part of me (the impatient part) also appreciates: Each subplot that is introduced that I feel like will take time to resolve or come to fruition actually turns out just to be the plot (or part of the plot) of that episode, likely because the season is only 10 episodes long and they have a lot to get through, but I didn't notice this in the previous two seasons.

Great episode.

Wonder how Illithia will react/do.

I belive she will return to Rome, plead to Villerius(spelling?) and he will move down to Capua.

Glaber will either get killed or kill jailbait.

its because he thought an "Eye for an Eye" would ease Spartacus's pain and end his "cause" but he fails at seeing the bigger picture of it.

he's just not a fan of the cause and the damage it can bring to the slaves (people being Crucified just whispering the Spartacus's name, etc).

Great episode. It did feel like they were playing it safe in order to save stuff for the next 2 episodes, but I still really enjoyed it. I was also finally comfortable watching Liam as Spartacus without thinking of Andy because they gave him some good material to work with.

And the Rome hate on this page is embarrassing. May the Gods strike such opinion from existence. Rome is GREAT.

What! this season is only ten episodes :O! I thought I'd have 5 more weeks of this. At least it will make the wait for clash of kings seem shorter

Gannicus didn't kidnap Ilithiya for selfish reasons, he did it do that the rebellion could end and no more innocent slaves would be crucified. That's why he got pissed that Spartacus didn't take this opportunity to end everything.

I'm guessing he felt that killing Glaber would just make the Romans send another, higher ranking commander. I suppose he can also read minds and knew Glaber didn't care much for his wife.

Very predictable episode, but still a good one. I'm guessing Illythia will go to Rome now that she knows Glabber doesn't give a shit about the baby. Hopefully she can get Lucretia to come with her. I feel like her work in Capua is done and she can wreak more havok in Rome anyway. ;p

I also thought it was quite strange that Spartacus, Agron, Crixus, and Gannicus didn't just wipe the floor with the measly Roman guards and Ashur's goon squad. Also, Mira and the old guy aren't very good shots, are they?

I agree. It's not up there with the best of the best HBO has to offer, but even a B-tier HBO series is better than most.

There is literally one post on this page saying anything negative about Rome.

"Hate" at this point just means "do not like as much." So yeah, let's cease all the Rome HATE and accept it as the great show it is.

There are some things in life that are black and white, no grey. When talking about Rome, you either think it's great, or you're wrong. Sorry man, I didn't make the rules.

Another solid episode. Did anybody else feel sorry for Illythia? Even after all the shit she's done? Nobody wants her and she's basically just stuck in the woods with nowhere to go lol. Maybe it's just because she's my second favorite character on the show after Gannicus though.

Also, plothole! But what happened to Illythia's other body slave? It was never clarified.

So that's how it is, eh?

Ashur is such a disgusting fuck. The rape scenes are brutal. Need him to die at the hands of Oenomaus or Crixus soon.

Ow, my head... Carnivàle and Rome are, together with Six Feet Under and Deadwood, by far my favorite HBO shows.

Anyway, the episode was okay. Illythia needs to die though and I didn't like the way the old guy died at the end of the episode. I would've at least expected him to kill that Egyptian or someone else from Ashur's group. Now he just sort of died without ever really accomplishing anything.

I'm not surprised that the Eygptian is the toughest mofo fighting on Glaber's side. There's a reason why he was tossed into that pit. The undefeated gaul was a champion, Spartacus, HBK and Doctore. It only stands to reason that there were other champions. Wouldn't surprise me at all if the Egyptian was a champion of some place. We all know Ashur is a good fighter because of where he trained.

Historical spoilers:

After Spartacus slays Batiatus to escape, he is supposed to defeat Glabber's army in some huge battle. Virinius is supposed to take over the hunt for Spartacus, so the obvious way for that to happen is for him to hook up with Illythia after all, and keep Xena around as her aid. That gives us continuity of characters from the villain side of the show, but still follows history. After Spartacus' army beats Virinius, then Crassus will come and end things.

It seems like Glabber is done for this season. Season 3 must be Virinius' turn, and will set up for Crassus to take over in Season 4 when Virinius is defeated.

If the show ends in Season 4 then it will have had a 4.5 season run, which is just a bit less than the 5 seasons they initially wanted. Making Season 4 a few episodes longer would cover the difference.
