Spiritual successors better than the original

I would have loved to hear an actual response, this just seems kind of belittling. I really don't think either of those statements were that absurd to begin with, but of course it's my opinion.

Considering even the creators of both games consider Dark to be the spiritual successor...

How about XenoBlade? Is it considered a spiritual successor to XenoGears/XenoSaga since it's made by the same developers?

You never get to control a giant robot in Xenoblade, I'm not calling it a spiritual sequel to the other two. (Xenoblade with giant mecha would have been even more awesome >_<)

But I never said it wasn't a spiritual successor. It's about as close as you can get to being a sequel without actually being a sequel, that's what I meant. They're extremely similar.

As opposed to King's Field, which shares their aesthetics, but isn't as closely related from a gameplay point of view.

Terranigma > Illusion of Gaia > Soul Blazer

Soul Blazer ≈ Terranigma >>>>>> Illusion of Gaia

I'm currently replaying the whole trilogy (still have have a bit left on Terranigma) and found IoG to be rather crap. Terranigma and Soul Blazer are both awesome but for very different reasons

Hard Corps > Contra

Does Hard Corps really count as a spiritual successor when this exists? :

Bayonetta > DMC

By the original DMC creator, obliterates everything in the genre. All hail Kamiya.

Chrono Cross is far better than Chrono Trigger

Chrono Cross is worse solely because the battles are stupid slow to start and stupid slow once they start going. Extremely dull combat, I tried replaying it a few months, I don't know how I ever had the patience for that crap. I replayed CT recently from start to finish, had a blast.

Fallout > Wasteland
Dark Souls > Demon's Souls for sure. Not cause Demon's Souls isn't great, but because Dark Souls is just that much better. It's kind of hard to argue that that's not just a sequel though.
Torchlight > Diablo II (come at me bros etc.)

I know it's officially billed as a sequel, but the way it's executed pretty much makes it feel like it falls somewhere between a spin-off and a spiritual successor.

The producer went on the record insisting that Chrono Cross was *not* really a sequel, which irritated me.

Child of Eden >>> Rez. Better stage design and a good scoring system makes CoE the superior game, hands down.

Disagreement! Child of Eden's lack of variety in it's tracks does a lot to set it on a lower tier than Rez, not to mention the grinding (albeit minor) that you have to do the first time you go through the game in order to unlock new levels. I'll also argue that it has less "feeling" overall than Rez, but I chalk that up to personal preference.

If Rez is the sublime and magnificent "low budget" version of the story, Child of Eden is the overbearing, but still fun, Hollywood version.

Yeah buddy I'm sorry but System Shock 2 is a much, much better game than Bioshock. Dieing actually has a small consequence (better than virtually none), you can get stuck with no way of beating the game if you don't use your resources wisely and level up the wrong way, the levels are more open leaving you to complete linear tasks in the order you see fit, and many stronger-than-average enemies (birth mothers, assassins, security mechs, huge hybrids) make for more intense gameplay instead of a few super strong enemies (Big Daddies)

System Shock 2 is just a more fun game to replay with different builds. Playing System Shock 2 alone at night on Impossible difficulty takes balls. It will make you sweat. It will make you use your brain. It will be extremely rewarding. I can't even say that about Ninja Gaiden Black.

Also I played System Shock 2 for the first time a few years ago. Game hasn't aged in any field bar graphics. Go play it on Hard OP. One of the best gaming experiences anyone can have.

It's more unique and interesting but I think SS2's did a better job of establishing a mood that actually effects gameplay.

I agree with both of these.

I've beaten SS2 and both Bioshock games, and out of all of them SS2 is the one I'm the most interested in returning to... if it wasn't such a bitch to get running on modern Windows. I swear if that game ever get's out of license hell and onto GOG.

Okami...Twilight Princess is the only game to make me throw a controller...Okami was a breath of fresh air compared to Zelda which I think had been playing it real safe after Wind Waker

Oh just wait until you get to Xenogears' second CD. One of the biggest clusterfucks in gaming history, imo.

Xenogears is good, but if we consider Xenoblade a spritual successor, it's undoubtedly superior.

Wouldn't it be more of Chrono Cross's spiritual successor? There's nothing in Xenoblade Chronicles that feels like any of the previous Xeno games. CC, though, it definitely feels like that.

Paper Mario series, from Super Mario RPG. The Paper Mario series are one of my favorite Nintendo IP's, which was based on the great Super Mario RPG. They should have kept both as separate, different IP's but if I had to choose I'd definitely leave the Paper Mario series. They're great, fun games.

Flower, from Flow. I don't think I need to explain this, Flower is great!

I know this is old and the OP is banned, but I disagree completely. Plus I played Bioshock 1, 2 and Minverva's before even touching System Shock 2.

Kid Icarus Uprising shares very little similarity with its bretheren aside from some characters and enemies. That said, it's fantastic.

They did keep both series, didn't they? Isn't the Mario & Luigi games made by the same guys that did SMRPG? And aren't M&L games closer in tone and gameplay to SMRPG as well? I haven't played any M&L games but that's the impression I've had.

Paper Mario, though, I definitely agree! Much superior to SMRPG. I played both SMRPG and N64 Paper Mario for the first time a few years ago via Wii Virtual Console and didn't get the love at all for SMRPG. Paper Mario is an absolute delight, though!

I agree with the few people who mentioned Ikaruga over Radiant Silvergun.

I've beaten SS2 and both Bioshock games, and out of all of them SS2 is the one I'm the most interested in returning to... if it wasn't such a bitch to get running on modern Windows.
I think I'm genetically predisposed to mention DDFix when people complain about SS2 stability. Runs perfectly in Windows 7 64. In widescreen even!

The same program works for Thief 1 and 2 which is how GOG got them working so well.

DMC3>Bayonetta
Onimusha>GoW
Tenchu>Assassin's Creed

Idk guys I think last gen has this on lock

Demon's Souls >>>> King's Field and Dark Souls

There are some elements people may like about Dark Souls better, but Dark Souls is not objectively on par with Demon's Souls. I'm just here say that those who came to this thread to post that Dks > DeS are WRONG and I really don't understand how they can even justify making that claim.

Demon's Souls has:
- Better CONTROLS
The input lag and subpar targeting in Dark Souls when it was released are INEXCUSABLE. I don't understand how it happened. They basically copied everything from Demon's Souls in terms of how things work. How could they screw up the controls? This point alone puts Demon's Souls way above Dark Souls. Utterly embarrassing.

- Better, more memorable NPCs
Maiden in Black, Blacksmiths, Stockpile Thomas, etc. With decent dialog as well.

- Better crafted world.
While Dark Souls has a great world as well, the same care was not taken in crafting it. The attention to detail is not the same. Some areas are just lame (Lost Izalith anyone?). The enemies of Demon's Souls had better presentation (Chaos Eaters, Dragon Butts are horrible, Stray Demon with color palette switch is all over the place).

- Dedicated Servers

- Better resolution.

- Subjective: Weapons, Upgrade Paths, Scaling, PvP (mechanics + scene).

I'm not saying Dark Souls is bad. I own it, got the Platinum, and did plenty of PvP. But it should be obvious to anyone that Demon's Souls was/is the superior experience.

I personally blame Bamco, I'm sure they rushed From Software so they could release the game in October. The "Ready to Die" edition is probably what the original release should have been, oh well...

Mario & Luigi are themselves spiritual successors to Super Mario RPG. They may be made by the same people (I'm not sure), but they aren't direct sequels. And I think the games are different in tone (Though I admit I have not played RPG).
