Splinter Cell 4: Double Agent 360 screens (in-game engine?)

It's not playable so much as it is interactive. The Directed Moments, like the skydiving bit, are (apparently) an extension of the button pressing sequences we saw in RE4. You're supposed to be able to push buttons not to direct where Fisher lands, but to perform various aerial manoeuvres to make it appear more cinematic.

If it's 'gameplay', it's probably gameplay like the interactive cutscenes in Resident Evil 4.

[edit]buckfutter got in there before me. Doh!

NO LIES !!

page 52, it shows a picture of sam in a white suit (not the same location or suit as in the pictures in this thread), and it says "On Xbox, this skydiving sequence is a cutscene. On 360 it's playable!" ...now if it has one playable skydiving sequence, it could have another... but that doesnt mean that shot is realtime....it just means thats it very well could be :P

....which really gets us no where at all ! YAY !

*bonks Nobiru on the head*

Those may be realtime models but that is not a realtime render because of the soft shadows. There is no video hardware avaialble today that can do that quality of soft shadows.

No, gameplay is not nonexistant. Far from it, in fact. MGS is one of my fave series ever. For me though, the long cutscenes just take me out of the game completely.

Here's an example for an ideal cutscene for me:

- Snake has just set off a time bomb and is vacating the building as time is running out. He gets outside, and you make him jump to a secure spot.

- Cutscene begins showing a huge explosion. Trucks and jeeps begin to explode. Stored artillery starts exploding. Camera cuts to snake looking at the destruction occuring.

- Codec sequence begins with snake telling the commander that he accomplished his mission. Commander tells him to proceed deeper into the jungle where he will do his next task

These should last no more than two minutes tops. Again, that is the ideal for my tastes. Also, I don't mind longer cutscenes at the beginning and ending of the game itself.

Damn, I would love it if Konami just gave Kojima the go-ahead to create a full-on animated/cg movie of MGS. Then at least I can break out the popcorn and drinks while enjoying that. Not during the middle of the game, please. :)

So, sorry if I've offended anyone, but I just don't like to be pulled out of the gameplay for too long.

Youre basically saying you dont want MGS games to be MGS games. I disapprove.

Yep. I hope they don't change that aspect of MGS with Guns of the Patriots. I actually want more cutscenes and story than MGS3.

I bet Kojima is crying in his office after viewing these images. I can't believe Ubisoft Shanghai pulled this off. Even if these are CG pics the main game still looks great.

That's a painting.

Well perhaps we should wait for E3 before we judge MGS 4's graphics, remember the first time MGS 2 was revealed? Now compare it to the later game? Exactly. It was obviously a work in progress, they weren't even planning to show it.

MGS2 E3 trailer looked exactly like the final game. There were no improvements, they only removed some complex scenes that the PS2 probably couldn't handle. The part where MG Ray is on top of the tanker and Snake looking at it from deck.

MGS4’s texture work is very poor, some of the textures look like they are from a PS2 game. :(

I should explain, primary work hadn't started on MGS 4 till probably about last month, it's like seeing the work in progress trailers before the E3 2000 trailer MGS 2, they weren't an indication of the final MGS 2 graphics. You can't say the graphics won't improve coz they obviously will, you'll just have to see though.

Oh GOD...can you people shut up with your fanboy wars for once and just appreciate these screens? They look AMAZING and from everything we've heard from the dev team they appear to be in-game. The second pic in particular is one of the best screens of a game I've ever seen.

If you feel the need to try and discredit these screens, then reconsider why you're in this thread in the first place.

MGS4 development began in April 2005. If the TGS trailer was any indication the graphics engine is complete, the trailer had minimal glitches and was running at a good frame rate.

Like I said before I didn't see any graphical improvement in MGS2. The final game looks exactly the same as the E3 trailer minus a few complex scenes.

And you can't say that the graphics will improve.

You're wrong or I'm wrong, we'll find out soon enough :)

It says 360 in the title so it HAS to be discredited! :lol

I was just taking MGS2 and MGS3's development as an example. Did MGS2's graphics improve over the original E3 trailer? No they didn't. Did MGS 3's graphics improve over the E3 trailer? No they didn't! Same for MGS PSX. I don't think MGS4's graphics will improve, the engine is already ready and they know what they can pull off.

That's why Kojima said the next time we will see MGS4 he will highlight the psychological aspect of the game and the graphical aspect was shown at TGS.

When did he say that?

You're assuming the graphics won't change, I think we have a right to assume they will further improve, isn't that fair?

He said that after MGS4 TGS trailer debut. The graphics won't improve! The game is already running at 60 FPS with various effect Kojima wanted (Selfshadowing, a robot buddy, etc).

Yes, and once again, yes. Not by a quantum leap, but the graphics definately improved on both titles from the first teaser to the final product. Look at MGS3's first teaser. They were still using the lower poly, lower detailed Snake model from MGS2.

Alrighty then, but just don't expect to see those "ps2" textures there by the time that game ships.

BS! The frame rate went down for both! Neither MGS2 nor MGS3 have decent frame rate during gunfights.

The Japanese really aren't known for streaming engines. What if MGS4 has a huge open world without any loading?! Then the low res PS2 textures would make sense.

Uh....no....Kojima said that the graphics WILL improve.

Check the GI interview
Kojima said the the trailer was the standard, but that it was ofcourse not the complete version, so they will go even higher, after that they will concentrate on the things you cannot see/psychological stuff etc.

I know those shots Doom posted are renders/drawings...but if those skydiving pics are realtime, that would be absolutely amazing.

Unfortunately, it's Splinter Cell. I can only hope they'll re-design many elements of the game for this installment.

MGS2 sure as hell does. It will slow down OCCASIONALLY, but by and large, it holds 60 fps.

Also of note, I believe MGS4's TGS trailer actually used some texture data from MGS3 due to lack of time. I swear I read an interview not too long ago which mentioned this, but there is no hope of finding it again.

So when will MGS4 come out? Not for at least another year, according to Kojima, who said the game will be shown again at the 2006 Tokyo Game Show. "This is our first time, so we focused on presenting the visual aspects of MGS4," he said. "At next year's show, we plan to show more of the game's aspects that can't be seen by the naked eye."

There is no need for re-design. Go play MGS. Leave my SC alone. I trust in Ubisoft to make a good SC game. I don't want MGS fans having any say in SC.

Regarding that Kojima quote you posted, hes referring to the next TGS, not E3.

Man what is with you people? The graphics engine is finished! The game is running at 60 FPS with many effects. The team studied the PS3 and they showed the best results they could achieve. Now that Aci!d 2 and MGS3 Subsistence are completed Kojima Productions will focus on MGS4 but I think its safe to say that graphics engine is done and they will focus on the gameplay/story now (visiting places, making the environments, the textures, the gameplay, physics, music, dialogue, script etc)

Fair enough.

I simply feel that Splinter Cell has always had a lot of potential...but it was limited by a lot of boneheaded design choices. Fortunately, I believe the engine was partially to blame. I'm hoping that a new engine will allow for much more wide open locations.

You see, MGS is hardly the only stealth game I like. I don't want Splinter Cell to emulate MGS as the team could never do something crazy like that. I would like them to take a look at something like Thief and take some cues.

Man what is with you people? The graphics engine is finished!
They finished the graphics engine on unfinished hardware? MGS2 was shown after the PS2 had already seen release in Japan, you know. The hardware was done. As of last TGS, PS3 hardware was not finished.

A fucking men. No need to bring metrosexual convoluted storyline into SC. Keep that shit in MGS! :P

MGS2 was also shown on unfinished PS2 hardware (I read that somewhere). The team thought they could pull off everything they showed however some stuff was taken out. Like the shadows and MG Ray climbing the tanker and Snake looking at it from the deck, there is no way they could have pulled that scene off on PS2.

We will see! The Snake model they showed at TGS probably wasn't the gameplay one. I think some of the stuff will be downgraded and I hope they improve the textures.
