No, gameplay is not nonexistant. Far from it, in fact. MGS is one of my fave series ever. For me though, the long cutscenes just take me out of the game completely.
Here's an example for an ideal cutscene
for me:
- Snake has just set off a time bomb and is vacating the building as time is running out. He gets outside, and you make him jump to a secure spot.
- Cutscene begins showing a huge explosion. Trucks and jeeps begin to explode. Stored artillery starts exploding. Camera cuts to snake looking at the destruction occuring.
- Codec sequence begins with snake telling the commander that he accomplished his mission. Commander tells him to proceed deeper into the jungle where he will do his next task
These should last no more than two minutes tops. Again, that is the ideal for my tastes. Also, I don't mind longer cutscenes at the beginning and ending of the game itself.
Damn, I would love it if Konami just gave Kojima the go-ahead to create a full-on animated/cg movie of MGS. Then at least I can break out the popcorn and drinks while enjoying that. Not during the middle of the game, please.
So, sorry if I've offended anyone, but I just don't like to be pulled out of the gameplay for too long.
