Square Enix reportedly sent C&D to Dragon Quest 7 3DS fan translation group

I figured this is worth its own thread. One of the leaders behind the effort posted this on Reddit:

So, we have just received a cease and desist order from Square-Enix. So we are packing up shop and hoping that this means we will see a release from them in the coming months.

If this is true, please consider buying the game to support Dragon Quest here in the west. It's the only way we will see more of these game from Square-Enix.

Thanks to everyone who offered a hand with the editing.

clearly this means the game is going to get some hd lipstick and be officially localized on a platform no one asked for it on
hope you guys enjoy dq7 on ios

EDIT: As has been stated later on in the thread, the fan translation group were planning on recycling parts of Square Enix's English PS1 script. That's a big no-no. Sorry for raising your hopes of a timely iOS release, but stay calm, it's coming. ;p

That's too bad

I enjoy the DQ efforts on mobile tho, shoutout to that one hand control scheme

Nah Reggie had to make something happen to make up for the E3 debacle.
Believe.

Would buy it on mobile though, DQ on mobile has mostly been great.

What's been Squenix's history regarding fan projects? That would tell us if they actually might be doing something about the game in question.

Historically, they're monsters.

>_>

OK, well, all I know of is their Chrono-related antics, but they nuked Chrono Trigger 64 and the CT sequel. Both those fan projects had a lot of hype for a while... ages ago.

And as we all know, the franchise has really been handled superbly by Square ever since!

Nuke them from orbit, regardless of their intention. Square don't really have much ground to stand on, it's a fear tactic; and it usually works.

I remember there was a whole fiasco when they C&D the Type - 0 fan translation after it was already released.

Shortly afterwards, Type - 0 HD was announced.

Yeah they do that to EVERY fan project using their licences.

Remember the 3D Chrono Trigger remake.

Still waiting on that heh ...

I think they shut down Type 0 translation before announcing Type 0 HD. I think it was right before they announced it but I could be wrong.

This is just Square Enix being Square Enix, shitting on their fans is what they do, don't expect any release from them. That ship has sailed already.

Please do not let me serve on a jury. I am actually a crazy person.

Well, last time was Type-0.
Reportedly they were in touch with the project head of that, asked them to delay their release until the HD announcement was out, and the fan project proceeded to release the fanpatch (against the will of the majority of the team, who wanted more time) 24 hours before the official announcement of the HD version.

I can see them being kind of burned on that shit.

They didn't, and it didn't end up happily.

I can't really blame them too much, since last time they tried cooperating the fan-translation guy ended up kneejerk releasing the fan-translation just before the official announcement.

They didnt shut it down, guy sent it out beforehand with code from the game... you only needed 1 of the 2 UMDs to get the full game with the patch. That should have seen some legal action i'd think.

People shouldn't be comparing this to fan games/fan sequels/remakes.

We should be looking at SE's history with sending C&D's to fan TRANSLATIONS.

The last one was Type-0. What other SE games have gotten fan translations in the past?

I'd say that it indicates something may come of an official DQ7 translation for the 3DS, but that's me assuming that Square Enix is truly protecting its business interests as opposed to preventing people from enjoying something they may never release to them ever.

Thinks buying more servers can fix a bad patch
is that how you make SE HD remaster and localize a portable game onto a different platform?

If they aren't planning on bringing it themselves, I don't see the harm in purchasing a Japanese copy and playing a fan translation. Been wanting to play this for ages, and when the 3DS version came out I was excited I'd finally be able to play a version of the game with a decent translation.

Well fucking SE, eh. I remember the translators posted on anothet forum and were helping out felloe DQ fans experience the greatness of DQVII out on 3DS. It is a big fuck you to fans, but I bet SE will ask them o hand over the code and and then attempt to pay then trough DLC codes for there efforts.

I think there's a fan translation to some super old FF games that never came out (maybe the original version of III? I remember something like that anyway =P)

Also, it's tip to everyone, not just people doing stuff on SE games. DON'T ANNOUNCE it until it's at the very very end. Until you can at least put out a rough version out there.

I was on that trans team and yeah the leader dude kept us in the dark. I along the rest of the group wanted to wait. And if Type 0 HD was a thing we would have stopped our work out of respect. A lot of us aren't happy with him and prefer to forget about him.

This whole situation makes little sense to me. Since they don't plan on profiting from the game, how can SE do anything about it? It's like, if I decided to start my own DQVII translation project in my own basement, just for me, what could SE do? What law would I be breaking?

I also don't see why they can't, discreetly, continue the translation and anonymously put it out there once they're done. Again, what can SE do? Maybe the group wants to take credit for their work, which means they'd be easy to identify, hence the problem.

I also don't think this means we'll be getting DQVII 3DS. SE sent a C&D letter to the folks who were remaking chono trigger a few years back and we never saw a remake.

Didn't we get fan translations of the Saga 2 and Saga 3 remakes on the DS? Did those get C&D'd?

It better mean it's coming.

It would be really shitty to block a translation like that and then say "Nah, we have no intentions of allowing English reading audiences to understand this game"

Edit: Although I do understand they have the right to protect their IP, a better way to protect their IP is to bring over a translated version themselves

this is why you don't say shit about square enix fan projects until it's out

the C&D is too late if even just one person was able to download it

I'm pretty sure that it falls under derivative works, ala fan fiction.
