Square Enix has outlined plans to push sales of its smart devices and PC browser segment to over ¥100 billion ($900 million).

In a letter to its shareholders, the developer noted that this segment had struggled in the first half of its FY17. However, it recovered in the second half of the fiscal year by "releasing successful titles".

Looking to the future, it will begin working on "more sophisticated games" to appeal to a more discerning audience of mobile gamers. This is due in part to the maturity of the market, which it believes does not mean that market is stagnating or declining.

"'Maturity' only means that mobile devices in general and smartphones in particular have already established solid positions as gaming devices and that gamers playing games on their smartphones have become a common sight," the company stated.

"This means that only fun, appealing games will survive, which is of course only natural. As such, the market is at last in a stage where the capabilities of the game companies will truly be tested. That is what we understand 'maturity' to mean."

I mean there will always be a cap on how much you can spend on phones so ultimately this should in some way only help with the funding on bigger games.

Exvius is pretty solid for what it is. Enough so that I play it daily and appreciate it enough that I dropped some money on it. A couple of the boss encounters have sucked me in with the depth and strategy.

I can't defend dropping money on a Family Guy mobile game though.

At least their main mobile revenue generator is not Game of War: FFXV edition. That's a thing that upsets me a bit with mobile gaming is some companies become successful with a concept then churn out reskins of that concept with the same pros and cons.

Though this reminds me how do game like FFBE work? Did Gumi pay for the FF license and is a condition profit sharing happens or are Gumi contracted by S-E as sub developers?

I only started on FFXVANE a few weeks ago because of some stupid offer on another game to make a level 10 empire would reward me for the other game... I've spent money and I feel dirty for doing so and I'm probably going to end up doing it again. 😔
