Square Enix: "We want [Tomb Raider] to be the best game of the generation."

Square Enix has embarked on a quest to set incredibly high expectations for Tomb Raider.

Any guesses on if they can deliver?

VentureBeat said:
Square Enix USA CEO Mike Fischer: ...That type of technology takes time to get right, and we took our time to get it right. The same thing applies to Tomb Raider, right? We just announced the game’s going to be coming out in 2013. We could ship that game now, it’s so good. So imagine how awesome it’s going to be when it hits the market.

GamesBeat: Is there an explanation for that, too? As far as why it needed to go out further?

Fischer: I can look you in the eye and tell you, honest to goodness, we want this to be the best game of the generation. And the time that we’re giving it is going to allow that to happen. Look, you’re going to see the game at E3. Tell me if you think I’m blowing smoke your way. It’s really that good.

Edit:

He also weighed in on the sales potential of Versus XIII:

VentureBeat said:
GamesBeat: Yeah, I think as long as it doesn’t go to three E3s, right…? [big laughs]

Fischer: I think there is kind of a three-E3 rule. No game has ever been to three E3s and turned out to be a hit. You’ve got a good point there.

Good. I wouldn't expect him to come out and say we're making derivative muck. Hopefully it lives up to expectations, hell, it might actually be the first good Tomb Raider game...

Don't say things like this, SE... Just don't...

It's gonna come back and bite you in the ass so hard.

1-D_FTW: Me too.

Over the years, I've really grown detached from Square games. But the marriage of Eidos and Square is one of the great things to happen this gen. I say work your mojo, Sqeidos, and let's see you deliver.

2013 is looking like the year for potential games of the generation, tho. Tail end is always like that.

Bioshock Infinite
Tomb Raider
Devil's Third
Last Guardian lol

They can do it. The last few Tomb Raiders have good and Guardian of Light is the best XBLA/PSN game out there. Crystal Dynamics has been on a role.

But it's good that they aim high.

Aim for the moon: even if you miss you'll land among the stars.

Unless you're involved in the shuttle mission. In that case if you miss the moon everyone dies a horrible death of slow starvation, dehydration, and aphyxation.

Do the folks at Square-Enix really know what it takes for a game to be good? Their products do not demonstrate such.

No they don't, but fortunately the Eidos guys do and even more fortunately SE seems to notice this and just gives them the money needed to make the games. They don't tend to interfere in the actual process. Though I remember reading it was mostly Wada's fault they didn't buy Rocksteady in time, that was disappointing.

Their Eidos developed games most certainly have. I guess the statement is true, technically, since their games have been great and not good.

They should be prepared to be disappointed. The fact is, the 3 Uncharted games have made it so that it's impossible for this new TR to offer a novel enough experience for many people to consider it truly great. And that's besides the fact that neither the franchise nor the developer has proven that it can produce one of the best games of all time.

Those games are only similar in the minds of people who don't play them both. That's even more true this time around.

Maybe so, I've only seen last year's E3 demo and it looked pretty similar (go through corridor in an extremely linear and guided "cinematic" experience). To be clear, I'm assuming that this new TR will be somewhat of a departure from the earlier entries, which I think should be clear from that E3 demo.

I just hope its actually a TR game, and not some boring 3rd person uncharted bullshit.

I have faith in Eidos.
