This page has some before and after comparisons:

It is with great pleasure that we bring this to you:

----------------------
History : Star Wars was the second print procured
by Team Negative1. 6 x 35mm reels were scanned and archived.
There was 6 reels of a Spanish LPP print, and 5 reels
of a red faded Eastman print, and 1 further reel 5 with
10 minutes.

The LPP had minimal damage, but more on the heads and tails.
There was a constant amount of dust and dirt throughout.

There were no splices except for the original crawl, and
Han shoots first scene.

Technical : Scan was in 2k, and resulted in a HD 1080p version.
Later, select shots were rescanned in 4k, along with the rest
of the LPP print. This was not used as the workflow was already
1080p.

Compatibility :
At this point, there is no GOUT compatibility and no subtitles.

Not done:
- Cleanup of glue frames

Future : There are advanced Eastman Kodak prints ready to be
restored. The scans are 4k, but again we are targetting 1080p
for the final release.

==============================================

Spread this movie. show it to your friends. tell people you are watching the original star wars!

We are happy to share it with you, because we enjoyed it also... and we hope you will.

It was a labor of love.

But in the end, despite the issues, the time, and money spent. it was all worth it..

We hope that this inspires people, and we especially thank george lucas, and lucasfilm
first and foremost for creating it.

It may have been a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away....

But not anymore. we hope to celebrate many more anniversaries with you and
watching it as it was meant to be.

May the force be with you.

This is not the same as Harmy's Despecialized version which is more of a recreation, Harmy also recommends TN1's version over his own:
Until I can make a new version of Despecialized (and this will be an invaluable asset in doing that) I would definitely recommend Team Negative 1’s version over Despecialized v2.5.

What would be the difference between this and Despecialized 2.5?

I think this version is only using scans from 35mm films they've found, whereas the despecialised edition is using any source it can find, so there's parts from almost every release of the film frankensteined together.

What would be the difference between this and Despecialized 2.5?
Despecialized has footage from sources of differing quality spliced together to try and recreate the theatrical versions. This means that some parts of the Despecialized will be of a higher quality because of the use of the Blu-Ray and some scenes (the ones that have been taken from a Laserdisc or other low quality sources) will be of a lower quality despite cleanup. A lot of stuff in the D2.5 have also been created by hand, such as the opening text.

This 35mm restoration is the original film at a consistent quality that is lower than the Blu-Ray but still the best version of the theatrical release that you can find.

The fact that Harmy endorsed this got me really excited. His version was already close to perfect.

Now he can also use this as a source for future Despecialized editions. Original ANH will look better than ever.

Cool. Finished a Star Wars marathon a couple weeks back with the despecialized edition so wont be watching this for a while, but this is really great.

Fans do what Lucas/Disney aren't willing to.

So the next version would presumably be pretty much just sourced from the BluRay and this then, right? Because I would imagine this is higher quality than all of the non-BluRay sources?

Disney'll definitely do it. After the weak DVD theatrical cuts and with the availability of stuff like this, I think Lucasfilm/Disney is taking their time to make sure it's the best quality physically possible. It's not like the demand will go away anyway, so there's no point in rushing it. Plus, they can time the release for an anniversary or something to really drum up excitement.

Soooooo.... where do I download this?

Downloading this is technically piracy. I believe links to piracy havens are banned on this website.

I'll share the links to download it if the mods allow it, but if they don't then you'll be on your own.

Was there nothing of value in any of the remastered shots from the various special editions?
Effects improvements are okay. Many of them are dated with 90s or early 2000s CGI and I don't think any of them are essential.

The whole thing is tainted with distracting additions of crappy creatures, as well as story changes and music changes. I think for many of us it's just the comfort of turning all that dogshit off and knowing we're getting the loveable original.

If they had just improved the look of the Death Star explosion or whatever, I'm sure we'd all embrace the SE.

The real question on everyones mind.

You know, the one things that I would want changed from Empire is the cene wit
h the emperor's hologram, but not for it to be puffy face monster mash... rather the ROTJ make up :/

Don't post the links here.

They say in the original thread to watch out for it on torrent/file sharing sites and newsgroups.

The weirdest thing to me was that with all the things Lucas changed, he never fixed the bloody arm.

See, I'd be happy with the 1997 Special Editions, but with Han shooting first and that CGI Jabba scene removed. It's the version I grew up with and was for the most part a decent balance between the originals and the art of tinkering.

For A New Hope? Not really. Everything is either so benign that you don't even really notice it (and thus wouldn't miss it if it was gone) or really bad.

I can understand not wanting any of the obvious cgi creatures in the background of Mos Eisley etc. What I don't get is throwing away shots that only had improved compositing and color correction in favor of the 1977 version.

Personally, I wish there was some sort of technologically feasible method of a release that let you toggle any and all of the alterations from over the years. There's a few less invasive alterations in Empire I like for example, as well as the reworked ending from the RotJ special edition.

The BD is always going to have more details, but the restoration has more accurate colors.

Prior to this the only theatrical re-release was the 2006 bonus DVDs which were sourced from terrible Laserdisc transfers.

This is the best version of the movie to date in its original form.

The knee jerk reaction is to say the top looks better. But the bottom is more natural and closer to the actual film as it was intended.

Really?

The official Star Wars Blu-ray was sourced from the original negative, while Team Negative One's was sourced from a theatrical 35mm print, several generations away from that negative, so it is more grainy and not nearly so sharp. However, the colors are much more natural than the overly saturated levels artificially applied to the Blu-ray in an attempt to make it "fit in" more with the look of the Prequel trilogy...

That's the point.

To me there should be two versions of this:

- one that's 100% true to the original release (which this is)
- one that's 99% true with Yub Nub replaced by the Special Edition song for those of us who like it (sans Jar Jar of course).

In fact I'm pretty sure that before the Jar Jar/Naboo version of the ROTJ ending there used to be one that had the new song and new scenes WITHOUT Jar Jar and Naboo, wasn't there? I think it was in the VHS Special Edition that came out in the 90s, before Episode I. Someone tell me I'm not crazy.

Good to know. I won't share any direct links then without express permission from the mods.

This film is very old and this version is from a very old film negative that Disney doesn't sell. Everybody in this thread has probably seen the movie and owns it in some form by this point...I know I certainly own at least 5 different copies of it and I've watched it over 100 times.

So if the mods want to make an exception, let me know. But I fully understand the rules and will oblige by them.

Anyone who doesn't like Yub Nub deserves the special editions.

Edit: That was terribly harsh, I apologise.

I didn't even know this project existed. Already got the Despecialized Editions, but I can always spare a few more gigabytes. I'm going to have to get my hands on a Blu Ray writer at some point, I suppose.

Has anything come out of those rumours of Disney doing a full restoration of the theatrical editions? Last I remember I think it was mentioned on the restoration company's website, and then John Landis mentioned something about it in an interview?

Nice. I think it looks pretty good all things considered. I may sound greedy but I wish they had been working on ESB and ROTJ prints as well, which are movies I like a heck of a lot more. :p

Yub Nub in Star Wars 77?

Naboo was only added with the 2004 DVD releases.

Hey, no worries, man, it's all fun and games :).

But yeah, sorry, I like the newer song and ending better. I've always found them more suited to the conclusion a groundbreaking 3-part space epic than Yub Nub. Not to mention I like the song on its own. I really want a version with everything despecialized/original with just that ending added.

By the way, now that Disney owns the right to Star Wars? Do they have access to the original releases, and do they have the right to release them as Blu-Rays? Or is that idea officially dead and we'll have to forever rely on dedicated fans to do that?

[EDIT] @jesu: yeah, at first I thought they had restored all 3 movies. That was Despecialized, sorry. Hopefully when they get to ROTJ they'll do that.

Oh that's great. Seems like they will be releasing them soon as well.

They have actually already released a "grindhouse" version of Empire and their next release will be a cleanup test of that.

They have multiple prints of each film:
Currently, the plans and workflow only allow so many projects to be worked on. Ultimately, there will be at least 2 main versions of each film released.
1 Star Wars LPP with Eastman replacements, this is the first priority.

The rest of the projects will be in parallel.
2 Empire Strikes Back - Sanitized - [Eastman-Fuji hybrid]

3 Star Wars [Eastman]
4 Return of the Jedi [LPP Hybrid]
5 Empire Strikes Back [Fuji]
6 Return of the Jedi [Eastman]

Sure there was.

In ANH, there are some more dynamic shots of the ships flying.

ESB had a ton of positive changes, from fixing some of the compositing, to making Cloud City a lot less visually sterile.

ROTJ had a brief additional moment with the rancor to the better finale.

There's just a lot of garbage too. The dated creature animation, the awful ROTJ musical number, the ANH Jabba sequence that kinda adds nothing aside from looking ugly.... not to mention further tweaks like adding Hayden Christensen to ROTJ, to the additional Vader "Nooo"s.
