I don't get the hate for long movies either. We can love Mandalorian which is longer, and has more filler. We are so woke to film length though because that one was divided up for us.
feel like 3+ hour mega blockbuster has been a thing for over a decade now, some of the Pirates movies were long af, that Spider-Man and the LOTR, etc. plus people LOVE to binge. i like a long movie myself, let me really soak in the atmosphere. IMO 1.5 hr is the ideal length based on REM/sleep cycles.

there is nothing wrong w a long movie. the reason they didn't want it long was, that meant less showings, on less screens, thus less money. make a shorter movie, make more money.

like many other bad decisions that hurt the ST, this was a money based one.

not sure I believe this but the idea of them selling an exclusive cut with the ghosts on D+ sounds sadly realistic

Who knows how much disney is making from all the licensing?

You clearly havent been to a thrift store lately.

4 billion out right.
2 billion on two empty theme parks
Cost of making 5 movies
On going costs of keeping the company running (staffing costs, property costs, expenses)

They are nowhere near in the black.

I keep hearing Galaxy's Edge is a bomb but I have a hard time believing that.

Maybe paying $200 for a lightsaber isn't that popular but it's Disneyland with Star Wars. I can't imagine anything less than huge crowds.

It was pretty dire up until the second ride opened. Havent heard much since it opened so I imagine its picked up.

It sounds like the Disney Parks are just on a current decline as a whole, not just Galaxy's Edge.
Opening Galaxy's Edge before it was ready was a bad mistake too.

Yup I agree hundred percent.

Didn't they even limit guesr attendence for the first week or so?

I guess people also really can't afford luxuries like Disneyland especially in our changing climate and culture.

Except the highest grossing movies ever are some of the longest including THE highest grossing one that came out last year called Endgame that was over 3 hours

So apparently there is an official explanation for Palpatine's return but they're keeping a lid on it either because....

1) the JJ cut is real and/or additional scenes for a re-release

2) it will be mentioned in the novelization in March

3) the secret of his return somehow ties into the new trilogy or gives away something about where Disney is going next

IIRC the new trilogy is being announced this month. My wild guess is the new scenes or Palps secret ties with it somehow but they want to wait releasing this until after the details of the new trilogy (iirc middle of this month) is revealed.

Because there's fuck all there probably. I think you can look directly at the non existent toy sales and equate them to Galaxy's Edge. Young kids are just not that into Star Wars, so why would they want to go there, and their pare are not going to stump up a couple of grand for something the kids don't care about. If Galaxy's Edge was OT themed then it would probably be chock full of nerds every day.

I'm gonna get shit for this but leaning away from appealing to boys probably doesn't help.

Disney in all their push for diversity forgot that Star Wars and Marvel was (and I guess is to some extent) still mostly franchises consumed and loved my boys and uh.... men.

At least when I was a little boy, girls laughed at you for liking Star Wars or just thought it was stupid or boring.

Makes me wonder how the new Marvel Land is going to fare?

But yeah I think a lot of it had to do with not opening with the showcase ride and only including a video game movie ride that I've heard is tamer than Star Tours, which itself was pretty tame when I rode it in the 90s.

Well it's true. The mental left think that they can force girls to like boys things and boys to like girls things, but the reality is that males and females are wired differently and they will naturally gravitate towards gender stereotypes. The Force is Female is the absolute worst business decision of all time. Little boys do not want to play with dolls...

Look at this clip.

I think there are so many factors that fed into this and the end result, I think, is that the original Star Wars is seen as a bit outdated and "exclusionary".
They are trying to take the old and well known Star Wars brand and slap it on all this new stuff.

I'd say the difference between Marvel and Star Wars is that Marvel is introducing a lot of already established Marvel characters to the movie screen for the first time whereas Star Wars is trying to just put a Star Wars coat of paint over something that isn't really Star Wars.

Marvel has the advantage of offering 20+ movies that have a little bit of something for everyone and then they have all these intersections and crossovers that tie up a grander narrative. There's always a new character or idea round the corner and people will be eager to see how this new idea interacts with all the already established ideas.

Star Wars had nothing like this in the new Trilogy:

New Star Wars is stuck between wanting to use the imagery of the OT while also wanting to tear down the characters and lore of the OT. So you don't get to see Luke teaming up with any of the new guys etc. Here are the new characters. Better than the old characters. Like them you bigots!

Marvel at least had the sense to understand why it should be Thor, Cap and Tony taking on Thanos at the end and why it had to be Tony who finally beats him.

Star Wars says "kill off Han and Luke give Leia all these new Jedi powers and backstory and have the new characters be the ones who really beat Palpatine for real this time".

They are making tons of money though so maybe we are in the wrong. I don't know.

I watched it this morning for the first time, my expectations were low and they were still exceeded. That film was an absolute slog. Checked my phone during the film to see how long it had been running for, it had only been running 75 minutes lmao.

Dark science

IMTHESPY

Abram doing his usual rehashing of scenes, characters, quotes.

Healing wounds

Rey being a literal God

Rey Skywalker

Ancestry doesn't matter

Clusterfuck of a film to end a clusterfuck of a trilogy. Revenge of the Sith was superior. Incredible.

Series can now join the shitpile of Terminator and Alien to never be seen again.

she's watching when Rian ripped off ROTJ one movie before JJ.

what a maverick Rian is! they could have ripped off ROTJ in the third movie but he went and did it in the second movie instead!

blew my mind to watch a ROTJ ending completely with stolen dialog and staging one movie early. dude really is just bursting with new ideas.

then he ripped off the Twin Suns before JJ! again, who can top this man's brilliance? so many daring new ways to rip off the OT!

god i get so hard for BTS star wars stuff

naturally we have the universally-loved phantom menace behind-the-scenes, which is just hilarious by how much of a stupid disaster it looks. and my favourite is rick talking to george after watching the cut for the first time and he says "you think about the original Star Wars, then you look at that (Phantom Menace) and its like what the fu.." so good

but i dont think people realise the attack of the clones documentary is just as terribly-good. george even goes so far to talk about dexter jetster, how "he's the key" - much like jar jar. beloved characters that will last a lifetime.

and you can find the others on youtube easily. such a good watch, and really shows how little george plans ANYTHING. he talks about re-writing scenes after he sees concept art and what he can do, just a fucking shitfest.

anyone got good SW docs? i like the original one with r2 and threepio narrating

Phantom Menace BTS is one of my favorite things ever. you won't ever see that kind of pants-around-your-ankles freaking-out-at-5-am creative panicking ever again. it is almost too honest in it's depiction of the collaborative creative process. just an amazing work.

this is a pretty epic flagellation by some woke media over not liking the trash that terrible awful fan peasants like. and being jealous of them over it! was this written by a petulant toddler? no! it's just modern journalism:
funniest bit was this:
Of course, just about every Star Wars fan is having their own opinion after their viewing(s), and navigating opposing reactions has become another eye-opening piece of my post-Rise of Skywalker experience. After my negative review of the film, I never thought I’d encounter people challenging my Star Wars fandom. It was a revealing glimpse behind the curtain of what my friends and colleagues who aren’t straight white men on the internet have to deal with on a daily basis—an absurd notion that only straight white men can like something. [Editor’s Note: Oh, the stories I could tell...-Jill P.] Now, here I am, a straight white man, and even that’s not good enough for other straight white men. Without comparing names, dates, or lightsaber collections, it’s important to realize gatekeeping is bullshit. Anyone can be a fan. Plus, you’d think since I chose, as a profession, to write about movies like Star Wars, it would be enough.
this guy is equating his not liking a movie with UNDERSTANDING THE PLIGHT OF DAILY MINORITIES (his editor, "Jill", obliviously signing off on it)

the fucking brain on this guy. LOL. like im not even sure what to call this. he thinks that him not liking a movie that other people like has shown him what it's like to be black? or gay? or black and gay? what the literal fuck?

fun fact: "minorities" "black" "justice" none of these words actually appear at all in this piece. despite trying to score woke points he actually doesn't consider the minority viewpoint in any way. they are not actually a consideration outside of as a blunt object to use to bash white people and compare his struggle (with not liking a movie) to having true understanding of the plight of historically marginalized people. this is peak consumer virtue signalling.

im curious about why the bolded is a bad thing. i see this everywhere. constant dread over "Oh god someone is going to be upset about this" "People will complain, burn the world with fire" what is with the over-reaction? who cares if they complain? it is just an opinion.

to consume media as an adult you need to have the respect for other people at least to the degree where you don't mind them speaking their opinions. you are not entitled to their silence.

like, is it not good that people can express themselves? we are just talking about a fucking movie after all. this should hardly be a touchy subject. it is a good thing that people can express themselves. the idea that it is a shocking, or "eye-opening", thing, that people would have an opinion on a movie that they see, i don't understand it. do these people live in another universe or something? what the fuck is wrong with them wanting to police every single human behavior?

Man the Phantom Menace opening night montage is triggering.

I was (holds up fingers barely apart) THIS close to doing the 30 day LINEUP or whatever down in LA, but I couldn't get away from work. Ended up seeing a sold out Midnight show and everyone was so fucking excited.

Lol same.

I waited in a two hour line that was all the way outside the casino (most theaters here are in casino resorts)

This was usually the case with big opening day movies.

It doesn't really happen here anymore and you can just walk right into the theater. Although for Infinity War and Endgame I showed up 2 hours early and the theater was already a quarter full. Damn those two movies did bank. Rise of Skywalker was about a quarter full right at start time and nobody cheered or laughed at all, unlike the Marvel movies which the audience were thoroughly enjoyed.

Yeah, movies here are all now pre-buy, pick your seat, etc. Endgame was probably the only one recently where the opening night crowd was great and enthusiastic.

I still am convinced I mostly liked TPM when I first saw it. I saw it a couple more times in theater and just kind of... soured on it over time.

I've seen it multiple times and still like it. What I've noticed though is AOTC doesn't hold up as well. It used to be my 2nd favorite PT movie but that now goes to TPM.

i saw it twice in theater. the Jar Jar scenes were cringey but they were not that much tbh like 5 mins total. plus Star Wars had the Ewoks already so I was prepared to put up with some bs so long as we got kickass sequences like the Pod Race and Jedi/Sith battle. i enjoyed it.

in general i think less people are going to the movies, this is one reason why tickets are so much more expensive these days. this impacts the big guys thus they are doing this marketing to mega fans, encouraging fan wars, etc. anything to keep their most prominent model consumers hyping it up, making it seem like a more important thing than it is. like other traditional media, movie are losing relevance, thus catering to clickbait marketing. they are desperate because less people go to movies.

let's look at some facts. tickets sold:
In 1977, the average movie ticket cost $2.23. When "A New Hope" opened, that's all kids had when it came to action figures -- hope.May 14, 1999
movie tickets averaged ~$2.23 in 1977. the domestic numbers for ANH add up to $460,998,007.

with the ticket cost in mind, that is ~206,725,563 movie tickets the first Star Wars sold in 1977, back when the US had 100 million less people. let's compare that to TFA, which has been seen as a huge success:
In all, the mean ticket price for all of 2015 in the U.S. was $8.43
https://www.slashfilm.com/average-movie-ticket-price-2015/
movie tickets averaged $8.43 in 2015. the domestic numbers for TFA add up to $936,662,225.

with ticket cost in mind, that is 111,110,854 tickets sold in the USA for TFA. the Force Awakens somehow managed to sell ~95 million fewer tickets than the first movie did, despite coming out 40 years later when the US population had grown by 100 million people. how so? it is the ticket price gap (as well as inflation) that has made up the difference. they may have made twice the money on TFA than ANH, but the tickets cost 3.7 times as much, so that means fewer tickets were purchased.

I'm glad it wasn't just left to Kylo but I wish we would have been given more depth to Palpatine
The whole film lacked depth boy did I hate this movie. Even people think they jipped Finn in the last jedi, they straight up murdered him in this film.

Good shit, don't really feel like I need to see it now. Been meaning to go see it with a friend who I went to the other 2 with, and we both pretty much feel like it's a chore and keep putting it off. Might just end up watching it on a physical release or something.

I love this dude's videos, makes me wonder how he's able to have this video up with so much footage from the movie so close to release. Sounds like a lot of pretty ridiculous plot contrivances, far more than I expected actually, that thing with the knife
having the landscape of the deathstar in it pointing to where they need to go was just crazy lol

The word “Phasma” sounds like an excretion found in a persons underwear after spending a summer day outside in extreme humidity.
What is worse is.... Snoke. A Sith or Dark Side user called fucking Snoke.

I know SW has a lot of dumb ass names like Kit Fucking Fisto but for a villain to be called Snoke.

Dark Side Gollum was kinda lame for starters though.

Killed in TLJ by Finn

I keep forgetting about Phasma but this post really just drove home the point that RJ really burned as many bridges as he could with TLJ. I’m surprised he didn’t kill Kylo Ren too, honestly.

Imagine all that JJ could do with the wide open story of no one to fight! It still would have been his fault if it wasn't interesting enough for some reason though

I've said it earlier, but I'm mentally disregarding the whole sequel trilogy. It makes the fuck ups of the Alien, Terminator and Star Trek series seem easily fixed in comparison. The sooner Kathleen Kennedy is fired or quits the better. On another note, it seems that more people are coming around to the fact that Jj is a hack.
