Just wanted to make this OT so people could discuss these games in a dedicated thread and it's my first so apologies if it sucks. Let me know of any changes or additions I should make to the OT. Praise be to GoG!

Edit: infinityBCRT has been kind enough to supply the Tie Fighter reconstructed mod specifically for the GOG.com edition of the game.

OK folks. Here's the Tie Fighter reconstructed mod for the GOG.com edition:

http://www.savingcontent.com/2014/0...b1-playstation-ps4-controller-flight-stick/7/

What this mod does:
  • Re-orchestrated music tracks by Daniel 'Yitzchak' Bennett based on the DOS version of Tie Fighter. This restores the awesome original soundtrack of Tie Fighter (which was removed from the Windows version in favour of John Williams' score). However, it is not dynamic like the DOS version. Click here for a sample of the new music
  • Menu music is MUCH higher quality
  • Higher Quality speech based on the DOS CD edition of the game
  • Modified Tie95.exe by Pete Jatz which fixes some issues with the music in the game and restores some spots where music was not playing in the Windows version

The guide in general has also been cleaned up a little so if you just want to see how to setup your 360/XB1/PS4 controller, just look at the "Controller Setup" section for each game: http://www.savingcontent.com/xwing/

I sometimes wish Chris Roberts could get a hold of the Star Wars franchise and make a proper flight sim game within this Universe. Would be ..... amazing. Just look at Star Citizen and imagine that within the SW universe.

Games are amazing. Would love a modern sequel/remake of them. They combined that classic star wars feel with some epic dogfighting and space battles and put you inside the ships.

Is there gamepad support?

Yup they have 360 controller support based on some posters.

TIE Fighter was fucking awesome back in the day. As a middle school aged Star Wars nerd, I lost my mind seeing Thrawn in some form of media outside of the books. It was just so cool to be the bad guy for once in a Star Wars game.

These games were phenomenal back in the day. I'm really curious about this GoG release... though TBH I still have my discs in storage somewhere.

Anyone know if it supports hotas setups? My joystick, and throttle are different usb inputs and my joystick doesn't have twist and instead I use pedals. I can possibly combine the joystick and throttle into one input using drivers but no dice on the pedals I think. How fucked am I?

I absolutely cannot wait til payday, I will be picking both of these up. I played the ever-loving crap out of Tie Fighter in my young teen years, and I don't even care if the graphics and systems don't necessarily hold up.

I also never really got a chance to play X-Wing back in the day. A friend had it so I got to play once in a while, but it will be nice to be able to dig into that one.

in the game they don't really portray you as a bad guy though. I mostly got a 'space cop' vibe from it.

Are these the versions that support graphics accelerators? I played both with software rendered graphics long, long ago. It's be great to re-experience them with at least a few modern perks.

Right, that's what I kind of liked about it. You weren't a "bad guy" per se, but you were working for the Empire, getting shit done.

It was the same for the Rebels too if I remember. They didn't make them seem and more of a goody guy or bad guy than you were.

However the
Traitors like Harkin(?) and Zaarin(?) are kinda given a big evil vibe when you get to them betraying the Empire.

Really? I thought I was either gonna have to go back to my Mom's to fish out a Joystick or buy another one of those.

It'll be tough with a controller I think. If I'm remembering correctly, there's quite a few different keyboard commands. You'll probably still need to keep your keyboard close.

TIE Fighter is still one of my favorite games of all time. I liked all the games in the series but that was my favorite one.

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.

"It's my job." and "I was only following orders." are bullshit excuses for anything.

So these releases work just fine on Windows 7/8 and don't need DosBox or anything like that?

Would love to replay these games from my youth.

I envy anyone that gets to experience Tie Fighter for the first time. It's one of the few games that I consider to be perfect

I paid good money for this Dynex!
I feel like X-Wing and Tie Fighter are too hardcore for me. Only Star Wars flight games I've really been into are the Rogue Squadron games.

Though, I'd be willing to give X-Wing Alliance a shot, assuming it comes out as part of this. Maybe that'll be the inspiration I need to visit these two.

How do these play with a mouse and keyboard?? I played the shit out of TIE Fighter back when I was like 12, I had a joystick at the time. I don't have a wired controller to hook up to my laptop though.

well what I mean is you don't really go around committing genocide or being an asshole. You're capturing strategic targets, escorting things, ferreting out smuggers/drug runners/whatever. It shows a different side of the empire, their effectiveness in keeping order rather than just being a 100% evil/corrupt organization. It helps you're also working under Thrawn for a lot of it.

Even though it's been almost 20 years I still remember my favorite mission: the one where you get tasked with clearing a minefield in a TIE Interceptor - a flimsy little thing with no shields. I think the reasoning was you're supposed to show some rookies how it's done.

Then when they realize that, hey, this guy isn't dying on our ridiculous suicide mission - all the imperials on your side say 'fuck it' turn rebel and try to kill you. So you need to hold out until reinforcements show up. So good.

X-Wing Alliance was fantastic: so much variety and depth, but easily accessible. Once you get into the mechanics, it's hard to go back to Rogue Squadron.

It was a bit distressing to me back in the 90s that Star Wars games went from complex to arcadey. Not hatin on Factor 5, but they were just not the same as the X-wing series.

Curious how people have their controllers mapped if you're playing with one.

I have a joystick on order, but, it's not going to be here for a week or so. In the meantime, I'll try a 360 controller.

I felt the same, personally. I liked Factor 5's games for what they were, but they felt very limited compared to the amount of freedom in the X-Wing series.

I only played XWA, but did any of the other games have a Battle Simulator or whatever, which allowed you to set up your own skirmishes?

I'm using a joystick, but I'll make some suggestions. (This probably requires some extra button mapping software, as I doubt the games let you map functions to an axis.)

RT: Shoot! (joystick button 1)
RB: Switch weapon (w)
LT: Target ship in sights/keep held to roll (joystick button 2)
LB: Switch firing mode (x)

A: Next target (t)
B: Previous Target (y)
X: Target nearest enemy starfighter (r)
Y: Target incoming missile (spacebar)

Start: Open map (m)
Select: Enter hyperspace/end mission (h)

Left Stick Click: Toggle cockpit view (.)
Right Stick Click: Cycle shield position (s)

Right Stick Left: Adjust laser recharge rate (F9)
Right Stick Right: Adjust shield recharge rate (F10)
Right Stick Up: Transfer laser power to shields (')
Right Stick Down: Transfer shield power to lasers (;)

DPad Left: 33% throttle ([)
DPad Right: 66% throttle (])
DPad Up: Full Throttle (backspace)
DPad Down: 0% throttle (\)

I think that's all you really need for X-Wing, I'm not sure if TIE Fighter requires other functions. The biggest thing missing is +/-3% throttle. If you're playing with your keyboard accessible there's a few infrequently used functions you could free up to fit those in.

That should work for most cases. However, it does leave out committing ships to memory and targeting ships that are attacking your target, two things I think are essential for escort missions.

Also seeing enemy warheads targeting you is extremely useful.

x-wing alliance is just as hardcore, if x-wing and tie are the benchmarks. In fact, alliance may even be more esoteric

Would I at least be able to play X-Wing Alliance with a keyboard and mouse?

As I recall it may be joystick only. I do remember rigging up some method of using my mouse though. There's some piece of software that allows you have the mouse appear as a joystick to the computer. not ideal but worth a shot. can't remember the name though, sorry.

All I want to know is if there is anyone anywhere planning visual mods for this.

I loved this in my childhood, but I'm under no illusions that games made for DoS on computers with 8MB of RAM are going to recapture my imagination in 2014. But with a visual update, I'm sure the gameplay is fine even today.

thanks, will give that a go. Do remember lots of throttle changes trying to turn on a dime catching someone flying by. that'll be a requirement.
