Starcraft 2 and HOTS installation issue/question

So I own both the main game and expansion, physically. I decided to install the main game on my PC today so I could get back into the story for Legacy of the Void.
My problem happened at the end of the initial installation of the main game, I was asked to install battle.net and did, but after that the game stayed at locating/checking. I restarted my PC, and battle.net said it couldn't locate the file for the game, but did suggest I install HOTS.

Right now i'm dl'ing HOTS on top of the initial S2 install.
Firstly why couldn't it find the initial game/patch it? secondly will dl'ing HOTS make both the main game and HOTS playable? and finally if yes why did I have to install HOTS to make the main game playable, I thought the expansions were standalone.

Thanks.

Just install the game through blizzard's battle.net app. Shouldn't have to choose between HOTS and WOL. It'll install both.

I think if your downloading Heart Of The Swarm its that and Wings Of Liberty installed. I don't bother with the discs now, I just install battle.net then download HOTS, and I can play both games.
I know its confusing but HOTS isn't a stand alone expansion, only Legacy Of The Void is. I think they did it like that so more people will buy it as they dont then have to shell out for the previous games.

To fix your installation directory, go to the settings of the bnet program -> Game Install/Update and hit Scan for Games.

actually, Blizzard made HotS standalone not too long ago https://us.battle.net/shop/en/product/starcraft-ii-heart-of-the-swarm
This is a standalone product. It does not require any other version of StarCraft II to play.

Even if they are standalone they exist inside the same game, so it just gives you access to the expansions you already own
