Starting today, more games benefit from new PSSR upscaling on PS5 Pro

Interesting that some games seem to need a patch to support the new PSSR, even if they ran on PSSR before and others don't.

I don't think that's true. PSSR2 toggle works on everything (even demos removed from PSN).

AC Shadows was already tested by DF and it looks better with PSSR2. Maybe this patch will improve things further.

Oh guess that makes sense. Cause I was getting confused, with the whole PS blog spread and all. Lots of publicity to give something we already have, so yeah, this patch is most likely improving things.

It must mean that some specific things/settings make the most of PSSR2 that unpatched/unwhitelisted games don't necessarily have.

Maybe because of the different iterations of PSSR? Kind of like maybe legacy versions need a proper patch and games that used a more recent iteration that came just before the 2.0 upgrade don't need one? Idk just randomly guessing.

That's going to be interesting because the official patch for the upgrade to Shadows comes out next week. So what is PSSR 2 doing to the game now versus what we will see next week I wonder?

pssr2 has more smearing then fsr , from what i see on avatar frontiers of pandora. i think more detail introduced this. when i jump around in the game everythign is easy to see and read on fsr and sharper in motion, pssr 2 its only sharp still
No offence but what you continue to say sound completely crazy for me. I haven't Avatar but owning Outlaw and AC Shadows or Alan Wake 2 (though it's a Remedy game) and I haven't perceived a single one with FSR engaged which appear sharper or whatever better than using PSSR2, especially in motion; FSR is really horrid when you start to move the camera. Your ps5 pro or tv is completely broken or there is something wrong in your setting because is not even a fair comparison. The difference is huge in favour of the PSSR2 and not need any zoom to notice it.

quite the opposite for me

Ok had a chance to look at this properly a while ago, got a good idea how everything stacks up now. In order:

Outlaws: not as dramatic as I thought at first. Definitely sharper and more stable, foliage is clear now etc. Looks a lot better, not a transformation though. 7/10

Jedi Survivor: wow now this IS the real deal. Brings out so much texture detail - amazing. Totally stable and sharp image, looks 4k from where I sit. 9/10

Spider-Man 2: IQ issues almost totally solved. I think it's actually sharper than the fidelity mode, if anything. Fantastic image. Only trade-off is worse RT. Definitely worth it for me though. 8/10

Alan Wake 2: as before, ok. 5/10

Ratchet & Clank: yeah does look better. Tested some problem areas for flickering etc, looks totally solved from what I see. Again, you lose some RT fidelity - quite a big loss imo. Overall image might be sharper but it's not obvious. Locked 60 is nice. Probably just about the best option now, but would be nice to get a patch that offered everything, because I think the overhead is there. 6/10

Also, tried the following:

TLOU 1: Very significant improvement. Easily the best IQ of all modes. Looks absolutely pristine, gorgeous game. Was already good, though. 8/10

TLOU 2: er not played this for a while. Forgot how muddy this game can look these days. I dunno, looks clean at least. 6/10

GT7: Looks clean and sharp. Already did in 4k though tbh. Maybe a minor improvement but I didn't play long. If you're into that cockpit mode I guess it's a big win. 7/10

Avatar: Again, looks clean and sharp. I'm not sure about this game's graphics. Sometimes I load it up and it looks breathtaking, others kind of messy and wildly inconsistent. Today was one of the latter. As an IQ increase, though, very decent. 7/10. Maybe 8/10 once I get more time with it in a nicer area.

Astro Bot: already looked great to me with the old PSSR. It probably does look better, but yeah it's not the same step as from the base game. 6/10

AC Shadows: fantastic improvement. Pin sharp in 40 and 60 modes. Still as gorgeous as ever. 8/10

Demon's Souls: the best till last! Wow was NOT expecting this! FINALLY this game looks right! I always kind of felt there was something SLIGHTLY off about this game's graphics. Now I know! It just never resolved the details before, even in native 4k. Really, really big improvement here. 10/10
Astro bot looks better but the game looked great before. The grass stands out as the big improvement.

I was one of the only people who immediately tried AC Shadows Day 1 of the PSSR 2 toggle and reported here on GAF that "it didn't look right. Wait for the patch". This is coming from someone who is still actively playing the game after pouring 70+ hours in over the past few months. It was very fresh in my mind and I thought the visuals in that game were among the best of the generation on the Pro with the original PSSR already. I tried the toggle and in 2 mins it was obvious that something was wrong with the IQ. Distant trees had artifacts that weren't there before and to my eye, the clarity didn't match what we've seen from the new PSSR across the board.

The fact they Ubisoft and Sony announced a patch was coming in the original announcement, just validated my observations. I expect things to look much better once the patch is out.

AC Shadows was also not working correctly when forcing DLSS4, so maybe game acts like that with non default upscalers.

Patch should fix this.

They posted some videos of PSSR1 v 2 for the upcoming patch on the blog:

I can't say to have tested it deeply but the only thing I noticed with the pssr2 is it fixing the artifacts left to the dust passage with the wind, which was particularly visible especially during the snowstorm, probably the only IQ issue because PSSR1 is almost flawless there. I haven't spotted any new artifacts but I have to admit I haven't payed attention to the distant trees. Weird because in MGSDelta pssr2 practically fixed all the issues of the pssr1 on the vegetation especially in the long distance.

So i bought Jedi Survivor and tried it...

Holy shit, I think this game shows the biggest difference between PSSR1 and 2, like... incredible. And PS5 Pro is the only good looking and fluid version of this game that is absolutely broken on PC.

I've got to get back into that one. It's one I haven't fired up since new PSSR.

hey now! if you have a 5090, and if you have a Ryzen 7/9 X3D CPU, and if you lock the engine tick rate to 60hz, and then lock the framerate to 60fps, then it's totally fine! 🤣

Wait, PC version is still broken? I thought it was (mostly) fixed.

It's absolutely terrible when it comes fluidity. They fixed A LOT since launch but it's still broken with RT on.

With RT off I would say it's ok. PC version has higher RT settings than 60fps mode on Pro (it has RTGI) but I would say it's unplayable with how much it hitches even using CPU 2x more powerful than Zen 2.

This might tip Gaiff Gaiff over the fence

Jedi Survivor was the first reason why I bought the PS5 Pro. It was the only version that ran the game properly. Good god was it embarrassing on PS5. PSSR2 gave it an even larger jump, it really is that impressive. Cal's hair used to smear constantly while you were just moving around.

Cyberpunk 2077 patch is out and it looks absolutely remarkable even with the 60 FPS Ray-tracing mode. I haven't tried the 40 FPS mode, but I cannot believe how incredible this looks for a game that came out in 2020. Props to CDPR for making this into such an amazing experience after it being broken at launch.

Good to hear. I double dipped and bought a copy for the Pro as I previously tried it on Gamepass. Will try it sometime this week.

This is big coming from you. This is amazing! Was this updated? Or was it just the toggle?

Tried Alan Wake 2. It looks fantastic in performance mode now. The vegetation, the hair, the fine details and the overall image quality is just crisp. Im used to the amazing image quality of DLSS4 nowadays, but i must say PSSR2 is really close. Even from low resolution like in AW2, it looks fantastic on 4K tv and a far cry from the shit fsr or the older version of pssr

Hard disagree. Imo the worst pssr2 implementation. Image breakup is as bad as ever.

It is because game has medium post processing resolution setting, it looks like that (if this is set to medium) on PC as well.

This setting is performance heavy but I think they should cut some other things and enable it, massive difference.
