Update: It's now officially out. Be sure to check out the OP for further updates, especially the beta updates (scroll down). And the official Steam group.

Has a neat little feature which didn't get advertised: It has built-in XInput emulation. Aka

In-home Streaming has a little hidden feature that's never mentioned, but once in an beta update log, but is a god-send: X-input emulation for all streaming titles.

Just plug the DS4 into any OSX machine and it'll be as if you just plugged a 360 controller into a windows machine. Entirely plug-n-play.

I use a DS3 on my Retina and it works fine, they have input emulation built in too.

There's also mouse emulation mode for controllers, toggled with Guide+A.

Whoa, whoa, whoa.

I wasn't interested in this before, but then it clicked. I can play Steam games on my laptop that otherwise wouldn't run due to insufficient hardware and the gf/kids can still watch TV as my Steam PC is hooked up to it.

Glorious!

What are the chances of support for this coming to the Vita? I would LOVE to stream my Steam games to Vita.

I always thought this was the most interesting part of their living room push. You could get a small £99 box to plug into your TV and stream from your main PC. A local wired network should provide more than enough bandwidth and low enough latency for it to be a good experience.

El Zilcho?

God I need in this. I can't stand going back to my office chair and I want some All Star Racing feat. Ryo right now.

CGI bullshit is the death knell of cinema
Looking forward to trying this out when it becomes more widely available or I get invited in the beta.

This is exactly what I'll be doing. I'm hopefully going to build a nice rig later this year and get a streaming box for the living room.

Currently this is PC to PC, nothing else has been announced.

I wouldn't rule out smartphones, but would rule out Vita fairly easily.

well, according to this guy

I was surprised Nvidia Shield does not do this as well...

nothing better than doing a 'add a non steam game' to play dolphin emulator et al on the shield

I can not imagine they will keep on blocking as it will get requested a lot

I hope they'll add the functionality, even though I can see Valve not being friendly towards that idea.

it is obviously a piracy concern, but there comes a time when companies should realise that punishing people who buy games is not the way to go....

never understood that ethos

If Valve didn't want people playing pirated games through Steam it would tackle the issue at the source (being able to add non-Steam executables), not arbitrarily limit in-home streaming but otherwise look the other way, plus local streaming does absolutely nothing to exacerbate piracy in any way. If you read SEG's post linked to above you'll see that streaming reportedly causes issues even in currently-supported games so I think it's just a matter of imposing boundaries so Valve can iron out the kinks, at which point streaming will work with any game launched through the client.

So, I cant find anywhere what kind of hardware is expected on the receiving end?

Can I use a super slow nettop machine like this:

Integrated GPU with an Intel Atom???

Literally anything that supports the Steam client and has network functionality will work just fine.

I might have read your comment incorrectly, but Shield actually lets you add non-steam games.

As a matter of fact, with the right hardware you can even play Xbox 360 and PS3 games remotely on Shield.

My bad for not being clear... I meant t that you can with the shield...

Same, but that's not going to happen. Besides, Vita is lacking two shoulder buttons :/

Well, If I can get this working on a tablet + 360 controller I'll be satisfied.

If you are in the beta im sure you could already do it today with some tinkering.

With Android all you need is SplashtopTHD, it will send the inputs of any controller connected to your tablet as Xbox 360 inputs to your PC and it also streams everything at 60fps no problem.

I run two PCs; a laptop in the lounge and the desktop in my bedroom. I'd been considering buying a fully-fledged small form factor PC for the lounge which'd be more powerful than my laptop, but it'd be *so much* less hassle to have the laptop being a dumb client and doing everything through my (more powerful) main PC.

That sounds awesome, hope I get an invite soon.

and another one

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TvxT6rnH71U

sorry for bad quality, i only have an old crappy sony handycam.
the sound is from the client (stream laptop). The laptop is a piece of shit of amd cpu of 1 core, 2gb ram, embed video ati x1200 and resolution 1280x800.
the sound stutter like the video, but is a problem related to laptop power. with f6 you can see info of the streaming, like bandwidth, packet loss, frame loss, and a lot of thing. simple the laptop cant handle the power needed to decoded the streaming of h264 smoothly. in the info say "Slow decoding"/"Slow game" while playing

edit: actually the quality of the stream is excellent (when not lagging), the bitrate is fucking high. in the video looks like shit but is perfect. screenshot from client (host 1080p, client 720p) http://i.imgur.com/zG8yAmO.png

Sitting here at work and running Steam reminded me that Steam doesn't show your non-Steam games across multiple PCs (how could it?), so that could've something to do with it as well.

some people were experiencing problems with controllers, response from a Valve employee

http://steamcommunity.com/groups/homestream/discussions/0/630802978854195539/#c630802978881812787

I use the controller daily with no problems. I've tested it with Bastion, Batman Arkham City, Bioshock Infinite, Braid, the Lego games, Portal 2, Shank 2, etc. with a controller on both Linux and Windows client machines.

Can you give specifics about what games don't see the controller?

and the OP

Ah, turned out it was the games at fault

I tested

Skullgirls
SEGA Bass Fishing, both didn't see the controller, but took your suggestion and the LEGO games work
