Steam's 'Remote Play Together' will introduce online support for all local multiplayer games

It looks like Steam is getting a new feature offering automatic online support for local multiplayer games. Dubbed 'Remote Play Together', the feature was announced on the Steamworks website, which only devs have access to, though a couple have already shared the information publicly.

According to the announcement, Remote Play Together will enter Steam beta soon, and will allow "two or more players to enjoy local multiplayer games over the internet, together."

The announcement goes on: "All local multiplayer, local co-op and split-screen games will be automatically included in the Remote Play Together beta, which we plan to launch the week of October 21."

Nvidia used to have similar functionality in its GeForce Experience app, and low-latency game streaming services like Parsec have supported it for a while. As the name implies, it basically uses remote play functionality to simulate the experience of playing together in a room (short of having the other players actually in the room).

Could it possibly be used on non steam games?

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.

It will be interesting to see how this works around latency issues, but it's an cool that they're working it.

How does this work? If you're playing on a PC and then log into Steam, how do you log into the same account on a different machine at the same time? Or is this a different thing to allow "couch multiplayer" style functions?

We don't really have the specifics yet, but essentially you'll boot up Steam and invite a friend to play. Friend will accept and the game will launch, and you'll be controlling Player 1 and your friend will be controlling Player 2. It'll be just like you're playing couch co-op multiplayer except it'll be facilitated via Steam over the internet.

No news yet whether both players will need to own the game you're playing, or just one person.

Everybody go check out Parsec on PC. You can already do this and it works great as long as the host has a good upload speed. Latency is there but I'd say its definitely small enough that everything plays really well. You can also play with a party of up to 8 people all connecting to 1 PC.

Pretty neat, though streaming a local MP game to a friend and having them send gamepad inputs back to your PC is nothing new- Parsec has been doing this for a while, and there were even basic web browser-based clients doing streaming-based 'share play' for flash games back in the early '00s.

PlayStation's Share Play is limited to 1 hour per session though, wonder if this won't have that same limit.

Also what are the chances this would work for for non Steam apps? This would be cool to try with some emulators.

Now if they updated L4D 2 on PC to have local multi player that would be a good test to run if you ask me.

I assume both players need to own it otherwise publishers would consider it lost sales.

Back in the day my brother got the original L4D and we only had one copy so we did local split screen most of the time.

Now in Beta! With Remote Play Together, you can now invite Steam Friends to join your local co-op, local multiplayer, and shared/split screen games online. Up to four players, can instantly join in the fun. Only the host needs to own and install the game, while additional players connect through Steam Remote Play streaming technology.

HERE'S HOW IT JUST WORKS
1. Launch your game.

Join Steam Beta, then launch any of your local multiplayer games.

2. Invite your friends.
From your Friends list in the Steam Overlay, select Remote Play Together. Once they accept...

3. You're playing together.

Their controllers will act as if they're plugged directly into your computer, and all your voice chat and game volume options are available in one place.

To keep things simple, only the game is displayed to your Friends, never your desktop or other Top Secret stuff. You can share — or limit access to — the keyboard and mouse. It’s your choice.

WITH REMOTE PLAY TOGETHER NOW YOU CAN...
  • Play local multiplayer games with Steam Friends online
  • Stream video, audio, input, and voice between players
  • Use your own controllers, or share control of the keyboard & mouse
  • Play together across PC, Mac, and Linux
During the Beta we'll be improving network stability and compatibility across a variety of hardware. We're excited to hear feedback from you in our Discussion Forums.

So check out Steam's growing list of thousands of supported titles, join the Beta, and invite a friend to Play Together today!
