Ok what seems to be going on it, now that SU is blowing up, a lot of the people who ruined MLP for kids, AKA the gross Bronies that think that show is "for them" started to come after the SU fanbase. They were calling themselves "Gemtlemen" or some stupid shit and trying to do to SU what they did to MLP. The SU fanbase revolted and revolted HARD, because when you search My Little Pony in Google you get a bunch of fuckin porn, and they don't want that to happen to Steven Universe. They're essentially trying to protect the show's audience, "everyone" (but mainly kids) from having it turn from something safe and enjoyable into a disgusting pornographic wreck.
Yeah dude, I'm keeping up with whats going on with the "Gemtlemen" (god that name is stupid and forced) and it's nowhere near that bad. Yes, they are MLP fans, but the majority of them either never drew a single pornographic fan art or were straight up against it in MLP. Plus, the anti-gemtlemen were either already drawing pornographic fan art of SU, or would favorite the art of others who did. I make sure I pay close attention when this stuff goes down.

The writers for the show responded to the "Gemtlemen" thing a bit ago, on twitter and such. I'm not so sure this was really some kind of "brony invasion" and more images of every brony cliche bubbling up in the fanbase at the prospect of a group trying to create a special name for adult, male, fans of the show.

Thing is, Steven Universe already has a rapidly growing universal audience. The show is written to be accessible to younger viewers, while cleverly dealing with subject matter a lot of live action dramas fail at. It would be redundant to try and make a banner for adult viewers to gather under, and the creators have said as much. Remarking that it's actually damaging - because it insinuates that shows like SU, Gravity Falls, etc, are fundamentally only for children because they are animated, and adults must declare a special exception to watch them. That's the cliche animation has been burdened with in the US for decades.

A few folks have remarked that Steven Universe is doing a lot to help rescue American produced animation for TV from the "comedy ghetto" - the stereotype that the only cartoons suitable for adults are pure sitcoms or satire like The Simpsons, Family Guy, or The Venture Bros. SU has a lot of comedy, but it's also a genuine, non-ironic family drama and science fiction show.

Actually, that skirmish over gemtlemen is mostly over tumblr. Tons of feminist on tumblr have been actually implying that it's their show, and anyone making pornographic fan art (some even straight up saying any men who watch it) are ruining the show like they ruined MLP. That's when the tweeter replies began happening and when some of the writers and storyboard artist said they don't care about the fanart porn of SU. Some saying it's ok, another admitted (and shown) that she would draw Ed, Edd 'n' Eddie porn. I did not like that image she drew.

The impression I'm getting is that any supposed "brony invasion" is being wildly blown out of proportion. And it's stupid to get hung up on, since there's naturally a big overlap in the fanbases. The responses in this very thread are making me quite disappointed in you guys.

And Equestria Daily really isn't going through with the Steven Universe spinoff site? That's disappointing; I actually was interested in checking it out.

I mean I don't know 100% what's going on, I read a post a week ago but I didn't really pay mind to it.

I think what the SU fans were/are concerned about is, SU is good for everybody, but there's this group of people who want to make an "adult" fanbase for it, like Bronies. (I know not all Bronies are disgusting perverts, we're just talking about the faction that is. Or maybe Brony refers specifically to the gross fans? I don't know a whole lot about it really.)

The crux of the SU "protector's" argument is that when you type in MLP:FIS into Google you just get a shitload of porn. That isn't the case for Steven Universe -YET- and the fanbase wants to keep it that way, hence the "uprising" against the "brony-fication" of the show.

Steven Universe is clearly acceptable for anyone and everyone to watch, I don't see the need for a subgroup of adult fans who want to make it for their own and in doing so, making it "unsafe" for younger viewers.

Edit - oh snap, thanks for the clarification tkscz!

So the girl I'm dating really likes anime and Attack on Titan. I know she would watch Steven Universe with me even if she didn't like the show, but I want this to be our show, ya know? So, I don't want to mess up the intro episode for her.

Usually, I get people into SU by putting on Giant Woman and then they're hooked from there. However, she's not a fan of shonen anime (Yu Yu Hakusho, DBZ, One Piece, that kinda stuff) so idk what to hook her with =/ Any suggestions? I thought maybe Laser Light Cannon but then again I'm not too sure.

Like many, I caught wind of all of the good buzz going around the show and dove in this weekend. Got caught up to the latest episode and I'm loving it. I'll definitely be watching it going forward, but a few questions in that regard. So Jail Break was the end of season 1, but we still got episodes to come right now? But only some and then a break? And there is going to be a crossover? Is that going to be Uncle Grandpa appearing on Steven Universe, or the SU crew appearing on Uncle Grandpa? What's the deal?

Yep according to the SU crew Jail Break is pretty much the season 1 finale. They're still airing new episodes due to have a couple season 1 episodes leftover after StevenBomb.
When the chance to strip new episodes across an entire week came up, the decision was made to shuffle three Season One episodes later in the air order, AFTER a two parter created to serve as a season finale. This was done for a very specific reason. These three Season One episodes (Open Book, Story for Steven and Shirt Club) are largely STAND ALONE EPISODES. These stories could fall almost anywhere in the series’ timeline and not feel out of order. They will air peppered through the very first few episodes of Season Two. Your experience of watching Steven Universe on Cartoon Network will not be diminished in the slightest by this change of episode order. For all intents and purposes, you can consider Jail Break to be the Season One finale.
Though CN has changed the schedule again and they're showing a season 2 episode next week.

No word on a hiatus yet, though there will probably be one coming up as Matt Burnett (SU writer) said they're starting to run out of completed episodes.
The Uncle Grandpa crossover episode airs April 2nd and from the synopsis it seems like he's visiting the show. No idea if it's canon or not though.
Say Uncle
"A long-lost relative of Steven's comes to town to aid him in unlocking the power of his mother's gem.

Laser Light Cannon is a good suggestion and in my opinion a much better "first episode" than Gem Glow.

Bubble Buddies is nice if she's more into character interaction.

Tiger Millionaire is hilarious if you want to show her the comedic side.

And Steven and the Stevens is a pretty great episode all around.

I'd say watch the pilot. It gets across pretty much everything you need to know about the show and characters, as long as you can get past the glaring stylistic difference.

(which I guess according to Pearl's regeneration isn't actually a style change but just other, older versions of our current gems before being fatally wounded at some point between the pilot and the series. All of them... except Amethyst....hmmm)

Hmmm, from what I've gathered from the SU subreddit it seems like the whole gentlemen thing was actually blown way out of proportion by certain SU fan blogs on tumblr...
Apparently a prominent MLP fan site promoted Steven Universe during the week of the Stevenbomb and SU fans who aren't fond of brony culture or the nasty stereotypes that surround it quickly raised a stink about the idea of them being in or contributing to the fan-base (Which people in the crewniverse, like Ian , have already commented on. They all seem to think the negative reaction coming from some fans is pretty ridiculous/childish)
As far as I can tell the whole "gemtlemen" thing doesn't really seem like something people seriously call themselves...it's basically equivalent to those ridiculous fake tumblr post that anti-"SJW" people come up with to make fun of people (specifically young non-cisnormative people)

This THIS THIS!

It's just like how people were all "OMGWTF!?! They trying to can SU!!!!" a few weeks back ... then we get Season 3 soft confirmation.

People are super easy to get paranoid. MLP has no cross-fandom appeal, Bronies aren't coming to the fandom.

Huh? It's kind of absurd to say that MLP has no cross-fandom appeal when it very clearly does; just look at the crossover with the Doctor Who fandom, for instance. In fact, a fairly large number of people in this thread also post in the MLP threads.

Don't they have fan-art and fan created character from everything between Warhammer 40K to Legend of Korra in Pony version? Steven universe is so much closer to MLP than things that already seem to be shared by the MLP fandom, that I'll be surprised if there aren't thousands of Bronies that watched every SU episode as they aired, and even before many of us got into it.

Yeah there's apparently an MLP character called Doctor Whooves that's based on the David Tennant-era Doctor from flipping Doctor Who. MLP has crazy cross-fandom appeal.

Don't get me wrong, I don't have any issue with with said overlap. Just the implication that the more unsavory behaviors associated with bronies (which, let's face it, were unfortunately bound to start popping up anyway regardless of their presence) would begin showing up in the SU fandom and attaching that same stigma to another cartoon that I like freaked me out. But now I have a better understanding of what went down and I'll admit that I overreacted.

And Equestria Daily really isn't going through with the Steven Universe spinoff site? That's disappointing; I actually was interested in checking it out.
Well he didn't explicitly say it was because of the backlash, but he made a tweet saying he was no longer up to it. :/

I find this whole argument with SU fans wanting to bar MLP fans stupid. Again, there is already SU porn out there and most of the people against MLP fans making a fandom page (at least the biggest ones on tumblr) favorite the SU porn as is. I can't remember the username of the girl who is like the biggest advocate on tumblr, but she had SU porn on her page, and when she was caught, she deleted some of it.

Also, do NOT search up the Ed,Edd 'n' Eddie drawing from the Steven Universe storyboard artist. You Have Benn Warned.

Things seem to be in a good spot right now, so let's drop the conversation on potential fandom corruption; since I'm the one who caused this tangent, I suppose I have the right to end it.

I don't see it. Sure, if you like good cartoons then you may like both ... but "Brony" implies a type of rabid MLP fan that likes MLP for reasons that arent cross friendly with SU. How many people who post in both threads are these "brony" types? I liked MLP to .... posted in their threads when I watched ... would never subscribe to that group called "bronies".

When I think "brony" I think of the sad shacks of shit that fill the fandom to the top with porn and fan-fic porn and pony-con porn tables and sad shallow ball-pits. What draws them to the series? What brings them in and allows them to mix it's themes with their inner shit? It's cute, it's sterile, it's a beautiful world filled with innocence where nothing too bad can happen and it's easy to consume because of it's pure, simple nature/ themes and style (also all the characters are pony people so yeah, it has appeal to people who want THAT kinda porn and a show that can give them all the cute pony characters they could want to fantasize about).

SU? SU is more liken to AT and RS for all the reasons pointed out earlier in this thread about why its such a cut above the rest of CN cartoons. If "brony" fandom had infested AT and RS my outlook on them would be different and I would think they would like SU ... but nope, as it stands they like MLP for reasons not seen in other cartoons these days.

What do you think about when you hear PegaSisters then? As they draw half the porn art out there.

I'm ok with stopping it. I just wanted to put out the information on the staff of SU opinions and that the MLP fandom doesn't want a bunch of porn art of SU.

eek this thread is turning into creepy MLP discussion, nooo! *runs for shelter*

I just watched the episode where Amethyst shifts to look like Rose to mess with Greg and jesus christ that scene is disturbing

Yup. Like I was just saying, that entire episode is playing with dark emotional alchemy of the sort I've rarely seen in a show playing at that time on Cartoon Network. Any adult is going to understand just how profoundly fucked that entire scene is, and the many many layers of complex thematic heft that it's juggling in the execution. It came late in the season and by that time I was already convinced the show was something truly special relative to other CN shows (Regular Show, Adventure Time only other shows with episodes in this tier during day/early evening hours), but if I hadn't been that would have done it. That episode genuinely shocked me.

First I think "What's that? Guess I should Google it ..." . Then, after googling, I think "Ohh, female Bronies ... makes sense. IIRC Women in porn/ sex studies have shown more interest in bestiality than Men have".
I really think that's a big part if it. Most of the huge western cartoon porn fandoms that I have seen are linked to cartoons with anthro leads/ worlds drawn in an either clean and cute style (MLP, Sonic ...?) or a style that can be easy to sexualize (Gargoyles).

For those who posted as I was replying I wanna hammer home that yes, MLP has cross series appeal. It's a quality show with quality animation and good stories, lore, world building and characters ... people who like cartoons in general could like it and AT and SU and RS and TAWOGB and Korra and anime. But the sub-set of their fandom's culture that makes them such a unique case are drawn to MLP for special reasons.

And the funny thing is I don't really care about cartoon porn. I understand not wanting your fandom to be famous for it though, and that's really where the big deal is I guess.

Also, the show foreshadows it with catfingers.
Amy transforms into Steven and says something to Greg in it and the cam does some jumpy zoom in on Greg as he goes "AHHHHH!!!!". It's played as a joke but now we see why he doesn't like Amy transforming.

Yeah, it's so interesting seeing how deep they're willing to go. I wouldn't be shocked at all if they went a babadook-ish route with Pearl after seeing how she acted in Scabbard.
It's very easy to see
her secretly or partly blaming Rose's death on Steven if we're ever given a hint that Rose can never come back to Pearl in any way. Maybe her deeply hidden resentment towards Steven causes some gem corruption in her and they learn a lil bit about fixing corruption through helping Pearl. We still don't know wtf causes corruption do we?

Anyway, back to fun fan theory stuff!
I could tots see Rose being revealed to not be the perfect goddess everyone makes her out to be(Pearl, Amy Greg. Garnet doesn't say anything about how she felt about Rose ... maybe future vision shows her how Rose truly was). Lapis for example blames the CG for her being locked inside that mirror and says they knew she was there. She also says she "never believed in earth" or w/e and just wanted to leave. Maybe Rose kept all the CG in the dark about the truth behind that kinda stuff. Maybe she told them that she was only using enemy gems that had fallen in battle when actually she was just jamming any strong gem that didn't support her into an item or a bubble.

Gotta say episode 37 was alittle weird.
Edit: Agreed its a awesome episode I guess im alittle amazed at some of the subjects they touch on somtimes, definitely harder hitting then others that are similar ,Adventure,Regular,Ect. Like ep 40 is already going into some deep shit, definitely liking the show more and more as the Lore/Universe continues being explored.
Double Edit: Im binge watching so hard haha dam ep 43 Amethyst shape shifting got dark quickly,
like seriously shape shifting into his dead wife to mock him ? Thats fucked uuuup.

The scene where that Kevin guy walks into their little panic attack sphere and gives that glance downward was pretty unsettling. The closeup of his face and realizing that he's (unknowingly) coming on to a couple of unwitting kids... yikes. Still, a really good episode regardless.

Running with the idea that fusions are essentially metaphors for relationships (even Garnet's quip at the end about how Lapis and Jasper are so bad for each other, or during her song when she says: "Go ahead and try to hit me if you're able. Can't you see that my relationship is stable? I can see you hate the way we intermingle. But I think your just mad cause you're single."), I believe that Pearl felt her relationship was specifically special with Rose Quartz because she used to fuse with her. I believe their friendship/relationship was such that they did such regularly during battle or perhaps even walked around like that a lot in the same way Ruby and Sapphire do as Garnet.

That's just my speculation, but if this is the case I don't think 'love' would be an inappropriate label for it. It's just absent the typical sexual implications.

I heard speculation once that Rose Quartz is so big in all the scenes we see because she IS fused with Pearl there. But I thought that would make this whole story too weird/creepy lol

Yeah, that basically gets to the heart of why SU works. Well that and just how amazingly well written the character of Steven himself is. I do a lot of work with kids right about in that age range and the way that they captured his energy and his very specific level of awareness and naiveté is incredible. In particular he reminds me a lot of one specific kid who takes all of my LEGO animation classes. Not many animated shows actually capture how kids really talk and act like that.

IIRC in the Reddit AMA Rebecca Sugar said Steven's mannerism is based on her little brother. But then, writers who know how to observe real people always benefit from it.

I've also wondered if Garnet's future vision led her to see the truth of Rose. She hasn't sung her praises like the other two have. There could have been many possible futures where Rose did some questionable things. This could have distanced Garnet from Rose because she didn't want to gift her future vision.

Please do not put Venture Bros in the same camp as Family Guy and the Simpsons when reality is that it has been doing what SU and GF are doing for longer than they have. It started out as a comedy purely but the more episodes pass the more it becomes a character driven show about the failures of all of these characters. There's plenty of action, drama and serious moments and for myself and others it is THE example of what is saving American animation.

Like seriously, she is horrible so far. Just horrible. But I do appreciate that she genuinely cares for Steven. She just isn't very fun.

Pearl is likable in the sense that she's so close to Steven in her sisterly obsessive way.

Her personality doesn't change much over the series but the story behind her character and her motivations really changed the way I see her.

Does Pearl ever become even *somewhat* likeable?

Like seriously, she is horrible so far. Just horrible. But I do appreciate that she genuinely cares for Steven. She just isn't very fun.

Garnet on the other hand... "I thought... violence... would be the answer"
You're close to a big Pearl episode.

And yeah, Pearl has some really good episodes about her later on after the halfway point of season 1, particularly Space Race. She is the most obsessive of the three Gems and it makes for some great scenarios when she goes over the edge.

Bullshit.

Here's the google image search for "Twilight Sparkle."

And "My Little Pony"

This concern about what younger fans will find on the internet (hint: there are filters for a reason, and porn is easily accesible to youngins no matter what the topic is) is just a smokescreen for punching down at people more nerdy and less acceptable than you. I'm sorry that my interest in Steven Universe sullies your name, but you're just going to have to deal with it.

Good lord. If you don't like the porn don't look at it. This moral posturing is tedious.

She's actually my favorite character. Haha, sometimes I feel like I may be the only one, though. Wait for Episode 16, she gains some depth there.

Didn't Google images recently remove all pornographic images from appearing in Images?

Do you want to keep going? Let's start with a simple web search of "My Little Pony." First page has hasbro's official sites, wikipedia, Equestria Daily (nonpornographic), and a facebook group. Second page has ToysRUs, IMDB, Android Apps, wikia, a new story from variety, a reddit account, a know your meme page, and a reddit community (again, non-pornographic). I do get this from a compilation of gifs on the fifth page

Our kids exposed to lesbian shipping! THE HORROR

No pornographic results in the first ten pages. I'll challenge any of these crocodile-tear spouting bigots to give me just one plausible scenario where a kid accidentally runs across porn with purely innocent search terms. IT wouldn't surprise me if one does exist, but you're going to have to work to find it, which somewhat proves me point

I don't know what this tumblr drama is about exactly but it sounds embarrassing for everybody involved LOL. All I'll say is that the larger any show/property becomes the more likely (and the more in general) pornographic material will be produced especially if its something that would attract the attention of adults due to its sheer quality or appeal. As a function of the human condition, people of both genders clearly like producing and consuming such material. As in any group, some these artists are really talented individuals and some of them are creepy weirdos. It's not a bug but a feature and its not something you can "protect" a fandom from. Thankfully, if you know what you're doing its pretty easy to avoid such material for any fandom :)

Pearl is surprisingly.......unhinged. I feel like she's going to snap any minute. She has her moments though.

Pearl grew to be my favorite gem.

Space Race really clenched it for me.

Why do I keep seeing My Little Pony images in a Steven Universe thread?

Pearl is definitely the most alien of the Crystal Gems, which is ironic when she's also the one with the most attachment to Steven.

Coach Steven, Giant Woman and Space Race really do a lot to flesh out Pearl. She is the most motherly of the group early on and I can see why she became everyone's favorite gem until the finale.

I often get the feeling she's more attached to Rose than Steven if you catch my drift.
