Feel bad for her experience.

She should just mute them though. Yelling back just feeds them and the reaction is what they want anyway.

It's also important to remember that a lot of the kids on call of duty are 12-16 year olds spweing bullshit because of course they do because they are teenagers.

I'm sure we all knew plenty of meatheads in high school who talked like this to women in person even.

It's typical internet fare.

You shouldn't be upset about it because it's never going to go away.

If people were classy and decent and meant well, Nintendo wouldn't have forced robotic voicechat like "hello", "good luck", etc...

That's terrible, I really hope that this doesn't put her off doing something that she enjoys. Don't really play Call of Duty online and she really shouldn't have to duo this but is there not some sort of clan system where you have more control over who you are playing against?

I don't understand why this happens, I grew up playing games with friends of both sexes and it was just what it was. No issues at all. :(

I mean I'm a dude and even I can't stand the stupid shit that gets spat out in video game voice chat. I've had microphones muted since CS 1.6 and my online experiences have been all the better for it. Voice chat is only worth it when you're talking privately with friends.

Great timing for this thread. I was playing Blackops 3 yesterday and this one guy, who I reported, kept telling everyone, men and women, to eat their mothers' pussies. But when he heard a female on the mic, it devolved into, "Eat your mother's pussy, bitch. Your mother and you are whores."

I got so pissed that I turned on my own mic to tell everyone to ignore the piece of shit because he's an ignorant troll. Then I was told to eat my mother's pussy and that I am a "gay faggot," to which I responded, "Because being gay is a problem? You close-minded fuck."

I'm surprised I didn't sound even worse and as stupid as him by cursing even more because I have a very bad habit of not being able to formulate coherent remarks in response to people who are racist, homophobic, etc.

Shit pissed me off SO much.

Argh.

I am sorry that your wife experiences that. Women in general. Fucking insane. I hope each time these people are reported that Sony (since I use a PS4) actually checks the logs and bans them. Even worse, I hope people put them in their place in real life.

I find myself using public voice chats less and less as I get older. Only because I find them becoming more and more toxic. I'd rather play a game with no communication at all than a game where someone is berating someone else that just started playing the game and isn't letting off. It's a shame when you're playing a game that requires cooperation and teamwork, but have to deal with such negativity. In the end it can really damper the experience.

Yup. Dota got infinity times better when I found a regular team to roll with

Probably mostly teenagers who still live at home. Such people have obviously never been told how to treat a woman, or better said: how to treat a human being.

And people wonder why the lack of voice chat doesn't bother many of us. Yes I know muting is an option, but if all the decent players are muting games because of this crap then all you're left with is the shitheads.

Not allowing people to voice chat isn't the way to deal with this. The tools to deal with this are already in place. You can mute or not play with people who behave in a way you find inappropriate.

You also have party chat options that let you talk to only people you invite. Short of allowing you to record other players so you can report them with audio evidence, I think the best tools are in place. They could have an option to record the last 30 seconds of voice chat so you could report people using that.

As it is, you're able to screenshot messages, so that's good. If you're able to record voice chat in that way as well, then people will be less likely to say stuff like that as they will be banned or punished in some other way.

This is why Blizzard and Nintendo are taking the correct approach - just limit olnine communication. People are too irresponsible to be trusted with vocal anonymity online.

Again, terrible. Don't do this. Give your players the tools they need to control their online experience. Don't punish many because a few people misuse online features.

It's kind of ridiculous that some people keep bringing up that those people can be reported or that the player has block/mute features or whatnot. Like yeah, they're there, but why should a player like her have to constantly deal with this targeted garbage and waste her time blocking and muting and reporting other people?

How is it ridiculous? That's the best course of action. The fact that the consequences after they have been reported don't seem adequate for some people is a different matter.

Lock down your messages OP, i think you can set it so only friends can message.

Yes, this too. Again, there are several tools made available for you to control your online experience. More control is what you want, not the other way.

It sucks that this is true. But I agree with you. People cannot be trusted. OP's story is one of many that proves this.

But it's not anonymity that causes this. It's the fact that there are no consequences for bad behavior. Or at least, people don't fear them.

My point is call of duty kids being immature is not news. It's always been like this and unfortunately always will be.
Well, I think it should be news more often, and the "always been, always will be" status quo is a copout. Something should be done.

I'd like to play online with people but the god damn people ruin it. If only there was a way to do it without the people.

Sorry to hear that no one should have to put up with that sort of abuse. Have you tried looking at the BLOPS3 thread you might be able to find some people to play with pm here who aren't complete arseholes.

We have friends that play and have made a lot of friends. Pretty much anyone that treats her normally and is fun to play with we add to our friends lists. We actually have made quite a few really good gaming friends by playing with randoms (if you can believe that).

Not everyone is horrible. Some people are like "Huh, you are girl? That's cool, wish my [insert significant other] would play." and that's about all they say on the matter.

What if I want to know if you're DTF?

It's not a legitimate question given the setting, or really any setting. A woman kind find her own person to have sex with, without being asked if they're dtf by anyone. It's a shit question, using a fucking acronym and having no background with them whatsoever. PSN isn't an escort service.

This is why I gave up using a mic a long time ago. It brings out the absolute worst in people. Just going on made me feeling like I was in the lunch room at highschool again. An environment I have no desire to revisit

This is shitty but I'm always a little confused as to why people put themselves into situations like this. Why not just not play COD with your mic on if you're jumping onto a public servers where you know there will be pre-pubescent kids getting a kick out of being aggressive over the internet?

It's no excuse but the abuse happens to everyone, no?

If you're 'foreign' you get shit. If you're straight you get shit. If you're gay you get shit. Everyone is getting shit thrown at them and your wife was given shit.

Imo all games should go to the HS model where you get like 6 precanned emotes and that is it lol. You can only chat and message approved friends.

Its stuff like that, and the racism, loud music, and whatever else comes out of the general dick fuckery of game chat that caused me stop using it years ago. Party chat or no mic at all, instant mute all at the slightest peep from anyone in any game that doesn't have a barrier there in the first place, which is thankfully rare now.

Why anyone wants to try to deal with that shit is beyond me.

The latest Call of Duty offers a permanent mute option that is a godsend. Chat from randoms is the worst and horrible.

I was trying to play some NHL 16 the other day and it was just filled with racist or homophobic comments.

Nothing useful has ever been said in voice chat ever.

I've met plenty of cool people that I played with for years (and some I still play with) through voice chat. Just because they are a lot of idiots out there doesn't mean 100% of people are terrible.

As long the anonymity exists, this will always happen. Don't let this ruin you wifes enjoyment.

Enjoy anonymity on the internet while it lasts, because 20-30 years from now I think we'll be looking back on the present time as the golden era / wild west times of the internet.

Anonymity doesn't matter at all. Go and read comments on news sites where people use their Facebook accounts to make said awful comments. Go look at Twitter. People will be like this regardless because a lot of people are assholes.

These days voice chat can be understood by computers. They need to start doing that in console chat, and then if someone is reported there's a record of what they said. Turn that into perma-bans, problem will be solved before too long.

You could actually understand what somebody was saying in ps4 voice chat? I've had nothing but negative experiences as well so it's auto off now.

I feel the worst for women, Muslims, and black people who play online games. Y'all must have some really thick skins by now, because the behavior is atrocious towards you. This is one of those things we all are familiar with, but powerless to do anything about (arguing never gets anywhere because they're behind a TV/computer screen and have no accountability). The only real way it can be fixed is through a big effort by the companies.

Being black in the early days of Xbox live was magical.

It can still be magical.

Is there a mute option? Haven't played COD MP in a while.

This isn't a solution though. It's a blockade. There can be a lot of fun in voice chat with teammates. Walling yourself off from that just because people can't behave themselves around people of the opposing gender shouldn't be a proposed solution.

It's not the victims responsibility to not get treated like shit. its the perpetrators responsibility to not be shit.

Generally the shit thrown at women is more based on attacking them for being women. The shit thrown at men? Just generic shit.

Basically, it's the difference between a dude being called a cunt in Australia and a woman being called a cunt in America. One is easily shrugged off, the other is not.

Agreed, that's why I was GLAD that Splatoon didn't have any voice chat despite Gaf drama on it.

To be fair, it should have been in friends lobbies. No where else.

Voice chat is perfectly fine if you're playing with people you know and like.

Talking seriously, well, in this case there is nothing you can do to stop kids being rude assholes.

Just report them or mute them.

They are still behind a screen with next-to-no consequences.

They very well might be assholes in real life too though.

It will never go away with such an attitude. That attitude is exactly what keeps it going.

If everyone called it out immediately, it wouldn't exist.

Not quite as simple as that obviously, but it's not an impossible thing to tackle on. At the very least, it could be reduced if there was actually will for it.

And by the way, damn right I'm upset at women getting treated that way.

Probably mostly teenagers who still live at home. Such people have obviously never been told how to treat a woman, or better said: how to treat a human being.
A lot of these people are grown ups.

Never understood why online gaming is so toxic. I play Rocket League with my kids online and have had to go so far as to turn off the text chat even after getting called every name in the book. Stuff they don't need to see, read or even know about.

I make no claims to perfection but what are these people gaining acting like that? I just don't get it.

Yeah, it's very shitty because you assume straight males are given the same amount of shit as a female.

Also, great job telling someone not to use the features of a game because they might face a torrent of harassment instead of empathizing with their plight.

It's sad that people assume the worse out of voice chat, but I don't blame them. My experiences haven't been too bad, but I'm a male.

She was playing Nazi Zombies not competitive. She likes teamwork games and enjoys talking to people. Why should she not be able to communicate because she is a woman?

My wife doesn't like Competitive COD, she is a Battlefield lover. ;) Nazi Zombies is a whole other obsession though...lol

Yes, random online communities are typically terrible on voice chat, however, there is without a doubt a special level of terrible when a woman's voice is heard. I've heard it enough in games that I've played, From typical hateful bullshit to super creepy requests, it is on a different level.

I remember one time where I hopped on Cod Blops 1 on 360 and simply said hello only to be called the n-word by 3 different people. I actually laughed out loud. Like seriously, a simple hello warrants that reaction?

There are jerks out there, but there are still a lot of great people too. Sorry your wife experienced that, OP.
