My best guess is that they want as many people to play this as possible, including kids and women. Same reason the PG13 rating is so important in the movie industry.

They're not sacrificing anything people will care about long-term, while gaining at least the appearance that they aren't (as strongly) pandering strictly to adolescent (straight) males.
