I was walking back home today and saw this fancy car parked ahead of me, with "fancy" seat covers or whatever you call them. There was a kanji on the part where you rest your head. At first I was like "uh? I think I know this kanji! I'll check when I get home". Of course the guy must have been told it means "power" or some shit like that that. But the kanji was:

安

:lol or is there something I don't know?:D

it means: cheap

yeah. it means peace, stillness and also safety if you want it to, so it might make sense in a car.

Well, I doubt there's a big Chinese car-racing scene (except maybe Taiwan).

But it also means cheap!

I remember a guy getting a tattoo that he thought meant "power" when it really meant "pig". Is the symbol for "pig" the same as power?

You know, it works both ways. Go to Japan and see the english shit they have written on their shirts.

We had a Japanese foreign exchange student when I was 10, and the last week before our (and everyone else's) exchange students left to go back home to Japan, they spent the week at the county fair with us, it was a 4-H thing. Anyway, there was a t-shirt stand in the fair, and several of the Japanese kids went down and bought shirts that said "FUCK" in huge black letters on them. We tried to explain what they had done, but they insisted that as long as it was in english, the shirt was cool.

Yeah, but I've never seen someone here with random English tattooed on them and had them trying to pass it off as spiritual. *shrug*
On the style note, though, it's absolutely true, haha. Some of the things the little kids wear at school....

Heh, wish I had startup capital when japanese characters on shirts were all the rage. I wanted so bad to make woman's shirt with 偽 on the breasts, and see how many suckers would buy them.

Most of the characters come from the Chinese reading, so it's more an 'oriental' fad rather than a 'Japanese' fad.

Besides, you should probably think of them as Han characters before you do kanji. :D

Gaijin? So you're knocking on foreigners living in the States? And you're obviously Japanese , because no non-Japanese would refer to other people as "gaijin." Right? Right?

And what if the owner of the car is a native Chinese or Japanese speaker?

Can one be called "gaijin" if one is not foreign to the country one currently exists in?

No. It's a contraction of 'gaikokujin' which literally means "outside country person," (ie., foreigner) not "non-Japanese." A Japanese person visiting America is the gaijin in that situation.

actually you need something else for it to mean cheap in Japanese..

peace in Japanese reads like this.. 安心

so that would mean cheap heart according to you?

No, not anymore than 映画 would mean reflection stroke. But I just recognized it as a prefix for cheap, like 安い.

The thing is when I check on http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~jwb/cgi-bin/wwwjdic.cgi?9U it only gave me "cheap" as a translation, while if I check with the Firefox Moji sidebar it does give me more meanings like being rested.

kanji in Japanese has tons of different meanings and readings. And then you get into Chinese readings and meanings you are unpeeling layers unpon layers.

?? means the same thing in Japanese (an shin) as it does in Chinese (ngon shum - phoenetically in Canto): stop worrying.

? on its own means "safe"

Westerners who make fun of Asian people with random English crap on their T-shirts are usually the same people who get PERMANENT TATTOOS of random Chinese words on themselves.

Take the managing director of my company, for instance. He asked the wife (who is Japanese) of one of our colleagues what the Kanji would be for his English name. Little did he know that the woman actually hates his guts, and he gleefully went off to get a huge tattoo on his shoulder a set of kanji that effectively means "dirty, filthy foreigner" (sorry, I don't know how to generate the kanji here) - but it's a whole lot worse than the standard "gaijin"; and I know that in Chinese it means pretty much the same thing :lol

You could potentially make numerous combinations to make the words different, but in this case I'm going with 'safe' rather than 'cheap'. Luckily ;p

All the "tricked out" (or gawdy, same thing really) cars I see always have pretty normal English on them. Just company names and such, or sometimes a word or two of regular, non-broken English. Actually most of them tend to have no words whatsosever. Just rims, lights, and like 6 monitors inside. Oh, and purple headlights. The guys with the really expensive rides don't have any of that....there's several Hummers around here with slick paint jobs and amazing rims, but that's it.

But I don't doubt that there's plenty of weirdness out there.

Maybe among a certain subculture that's true, but I'm talking about middle class family cars and the like. I'm sure dad's car would be just as likely as mom's car to have a rirakkuma either on the head rest, or more likely lying on the dashboard somewhere. The fucking lazy panda from 10 years ago was just like that.

and don't forget the anzen unten omamori! (i actually like those though :D )

rirakkuma rocks (as do many sanrio characters (such as shirokuro buu)), but I just don't like tare panda.

and I wasn't hating. just saying it would be typical of the average japanese person to have in their car.

Where I live Chinese are the main offenders by a country mile when it comes to automobile abominations. Tofu shop stickers, communes of soft toys in the rear view, anime-styled murals all over their cars, this shit needs to stop.

And they were absolutely right, one of my favorite parts of living in Japan was seeing all of the 'cool' gibberish. It -never- got old...ever.
