I noticed that in the first image there is nothing surrounding the castle, but in the bottom screen there's a hill right behind it and more gravel in the front. What gives?

This game is also supposed to take place 100 years after Super Mario Galaxy 1, so I wouldn't think much into it.

That hasn't been confirmed yet, has it? I thought it just took place "during the Star Festival" and technically we don't know for just how long this festival lasts.

I just hope they'll go back to music at all. The ambiance tracks that took over most of Twilight Princess' soundtrack anywhere outside of cities and the field were really bland.

I think it's just reuse of a similar concept. In the last game, the 100 years festival had nothing to do with stardust, just stars, so this one is probably a similar, but unrelated festival.

Obviously you can't do that when you're riding Yoshi.. but I don't see why they would remove that feature altogether.
Apparently I just didn't watch the video far enough (Was at work, YouTube doesn't work so great and craps out after like 30 seconds), as it's pretty clearly demonstrated.

I'd say actually Orchestral + Midi is the best. Mario Galaxy is a good example, since it combines both, and the result is quite good. Not all songs need to be orchestral.

I'd be surprised if Nintendo didn't take the same approach to Zelda as they have to Mario, but either way I don't care much.

OMG BOWSER'S IN THIS GAME!!

Alright, that's it. I'm officially going into spoiler-free lockdown from now on. (LOL I'm actually serious though :p) That means no re-watching any existing footage or materials so hopefully I forget some of it in the next 54 days I have left.

The good thing, I guess, though, is that we've seen only 25 or 26 total galaxies (actually, that's quite a fuckload) -- although some of them we've only seen a single image for -- whereas we know there's at least 42 galaxies (6x7), possibly 56 (8x7) or more, so in truth there's still about half the game completely unknown at this point, which is exciting.

Anyway, enjoy. BowieZ signing out of the thread!
haters rejoice :p

I'm down with the cloud, as it reminds me of Squitter from Donkey Kong Country 2 and 3.

I hope the spring returns though.

Because we're looking at it from a totally different angle?

For you maybe but in the end it doesnt really make a difference. What matters is the quality of the music you're hearing (on a technical level) and the composition. Galaxy's pure orchestrated tracks are bliss, but the ones mixed with midi are just as good.

It doesnt need to be one way or the other. Even something like Metroid could play with an orchestra, only use it in the form of high quality samples they can experiment with for some fucked up synth. Mass Effect is a great example; orchestrated samples mixed with awesome synth.

Zelda's biggest issue is that the composition quality is drastically hindered by the woeful sample quality. Its horrendous. I dont care whether they use a full orchestra, full synth, or mix of the two for Zelda Wii (actually, I'd prefer that), but they need to up their sample quality. I'd much rather take a high quality orchestra with good composition over pure synth that sounds like shit.

Its weird how much I lurk in topics of games I have so much to say about.

And then I go to post and I can't think of anything but "Wow... I can't wait."

So I guess that explains it.

I really hope you can run all the way over to the castle from this image and that it's not just a reference to NSMB. But probably not.

I wonder if we'll see any big Mario 64/Banjo-Kazooie style levels in Galaxy 2. The biggest levels from Galaxy 1 could barely compare to some of the smaller stages in SM64.

it's pretty much a Galaxy rendition of World 1-1 so it's pure sidescrolling

Why are we talking about crappy midi music again? Did they remove orchestrated music from SMG2 or something?
Yes, thank Christ.
no, don't think so

so when SMG2 comes out and blows SMG out of the water, will you finally admit that SMG is not a perfect game?

Yeah, but how epic would it be if Mario popped out and it was like a sidescroller but then the camera swings around and it's like OHSHIIIIIII-

Then the song from level one of Mario 64 would play and I would be like EEEEEEEEEE

Regrettably, I am pretty positive that what we're seeing here are still (maybe moving) images presented on a storybook background that are an intro to the game. It doesn't look like you actually get to PLAY this part. The image of peach and her letter in the scans is on the same kind of background.

Doesn't this image kind of suggest the side-scrolling ends up eventually at Peach's Castle? Maybe Mario's taking the long cut.

EDIT: Oh, you wanted it to be 3D. The whole point of this section is it's an amusing take on 2D Mario. To make it 3D would be to remove it of its charm and purpose.

Yeah, that makes sense cos there's actually a lot of anti-aliasing going on in those pictures, as opposed to the rest of the super jaggy screenshots.

Also, I'm pretty sure Mario's jumping animation never looks like that in Galaxy. Although it should because it's gorgeous and looks like a much more purposeful leap for joy.

I think I'm reading too much into this

I think the initial image of the sidescrolling view is about as far as the charm will carry for me. I played this exact same scene in NSMBW last year. It's not retro enough to really strike a nerve in my soul beyond the first second or two. What would be really striking to me would to be like "Oh here's this 2D thing that you know and love, but here it is in 3D glory because this is Super Mario Galaxy 2, motherfuckers."

But either way, it looks like we aren't playing it, so oh well.

Yeah, no point debating about it since it seems unplayable.

UNLESS, they're doing something EXCEPTIONALLY clever by having the gameplay take place within the frame of pages of a storybook...

Just the white borders and the fact you see it's actually a book pretty much seals the hypothesis... Look in the middle, you see the where the pages are tied together like a book. It's definetely some cut-scene with a story told.

Not definitely: we could still be able to play along the story, which would be awesome. What's definite, though, is I'm not getting my hopes up about that.

I was thinking about going on a media blackout until I noticed some jerkweed had an avatar of cloud Mario. Sigh.

Anyway, looking at some of the new screens, it seems like SMG2 is even MORE of a homage/fanservice to SM64 than SMG was. :O

ok just making sure. I was reading a bunch of posts last few pages talkin' about midi sequencing and shit, and was paranoid there was some announcement I've missed.

Do not want to go back!

Edit: No game is perfect. SMG was merely the best game, not the perfect game.

Y'know what just occurred to me? It'd be amazing if it was still 2D, but the path he takes is 3D, so that it does wind towards the castle in the background, along a predetermined path, with the camera shifting, but with Mario always in focus.

The way every thing is set up I'd assume it actually was 2D.

Maybe just for a cutscene or tutorial level though.

What?

If anything, SMG2 seems to be doing a better job of actually homaging the entire series. Galaxy 1 was pretty much Mario 64+SMB 3 as far as the big homages went. Galaxy 2 has already shown significant homages to SMB1(intro), SMW(bgms and Yoshi) and even Sunshine(Tropical themed world with Piantas).
