Switch dock back to Nintendo store, price dropped to 60$

Wow. Now I see why Breath of the Wild in docked mode resulted in my Nintendo Switch being so hot to the touch. I thought it would at least provide cooling.

I'll eventually pick up an extra dock or two. The dock that came with mine is in the basement as that's where I'll play if/when I dock it. However, it would be nice to be able to scratch charge it, wherever I want.

Don't you have to buy a separate power adapter for the Switch dock?

It's just a pass through for the power adapter, there's no argument there.

Doesn't matter at the price point. I think you're overestimating the cost of plugging a power adapter into something.

I think you're underestimating the cost USB-C accessories, particularly ones that are able to pass power through them.

You posted a dongle that is not capable of what the Switch dock is capable of, and it costs a whopping $15 dollars less. If you've done anything, you've proven that Nintendo isn't overcharging.

me too.. worth it to leave docks permanently connected for the convenience factor.

The AC adapter sells for $29.99 by itself.

USB C shit is just expensive still. Honestly wish they'd not gone with it.
It'll probably be a god send in a few years when that stuff is cheaper and more widespread. Certainly a relief after the Pro Controller for Wii U wanted mini USB rather than micro.

Has anyone tried like the MacBook port thingy that supplies usb-c power at the same time as offering HDMI out? I saw people have tried just a USB c to HDMI thing but not one that also supplies power.

It offers 2 different video outs, USB 3.0, and Ethernet. Also, after looking up the cost of USB C adapters that allow charging/power pass-through (as their only function), they're less than $10....some adapters are $2-$5 (and they're making money at that price point). Charging/power pass through doesn't suddenly add a large amount of cost.

I don't think $60 is ridiculous, but I do think they could have made a big profit at a lower unit price anyway. Not a big deal, but I'd certainly side with it being overpriced.

Yeah honestly it's weird to me it doesn't even have a fan.

I thought it did have a fan. I somehow missed, with all the threads here, that it didn't have a fan in it :(. I still thought it did to help with an up-clock.

I see that people still don't understand that Nintendo isn't overcharging for the dock and that it's similarly priced to every USB-C dock with power passthrough?

It's going to be a very long generation

How the hell would you assume that it has any sort of cooling? There's no vent anywhere.

With that said it does make the console itself stand up, which helps for cooling because the console's vents are on top.

I honestly thought about buying this a time or two, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it. I'll wait until the retail package is available and maybe has a slight retailer discount. In the meantime I'm ok with only being able to dock at one TV.

Weird they'd sell it w/o the AC adapter.

Hopefully we'll see USB C prices start to drop once more companies adopt it (Apple please).

Not weird. It's how Nintendo fools you into thinking something is a reasonable price. They did it with the 3DS too. They do it with their storage (Give you next to nothing and expect you to buy an expensive SD card)

Can we all just reflect for a moment on the fact that, even if the price had dropped—which it didn't—the "better" price would still be sixty dollars for a piece of plastic and some generic cables?

And then, let's reflect on the fact that the price is actually NINTY dollars.

I mean I love my Switch but this is all kinds of screwed up.

Please tell me this isn't real.

Why would you assume it's not real? The dock is sized to fit the console, and the dock's innards are just a USB hub and a HDMI passthrough, which is simple enough to not need all that space.

Hell, it'd be weirder if the PCB actually took all that space.

$60 for a box of plastic with a USB-C to HDMI passthrough. Go fuck yourselves, Nintendo!

Only Nintendo or Apple could possibly think they can get away with this.

I can't wait until 3rd parties start pumping out dock knockoffs. There isn't more than $10 worth of material in there for crying out loud!

Yea, capitalism is crazy eh.

Look at other USB C hubs, adapters, and wall chargers. It's all in line with the industry. Not sure what people are expecting.

That pic of the open dock is like porn for trolls. Throw a LMAO or OMG in there and you have a salty stew.

Docks are docks, they are designed to securely hold whatever is being docked, not filled up with random circuits so somebody will feel warm and fuzzy about their tech purchase.

It doesn't just come down to raw materials like most simpletons make it out to be, you don't just count the raisins in your palm and say it's worth that many mommy!!! Companies need to recoup costs on manufacturing and R&D, there are so many levels to this shit. $60 for a dock is nothing, nor is it even close to being a mainstream purchase for most switch owners.

Switch requires quite a beefy charging system compared to your average phone.

From what I have read, many chargers can't charge the device while playing because they don't produce enough power. Your $10 phone charger will most likely only be able to trickle charge it while in sleep mode.

Yeah... I'm not quite getting that either. But people will still continue to argue that the dock should be $50 for everything including the AC Adapter and HDMI cable. Fairly similar to those who say the Switch should have 128Gb of internal flash memory and still be at or below $299.

I think he's talking about the $60 dock alone being overpriced. You don't get that "beefy" charger at $60.

We all know the reason why USB-C chargers are expensive because is because of a huge markup.

Let's not try and fool ourselves here.

I don't understand people laughing at the size of the PCB...

It's obvious that the size of the dock is what it is in order to accommodate the size of the tablet with the Joy Cons...

What do you expect from people?

For real though, what does this do.

Is it just a USB-C to HDMI adaptor + power?

Oh you know, ignorance and all that.

What do you expect from people?

I think it's clear that combined with the price and cheaper construction, people expect better for 60 bones. Someone even mentioned how that space could have been used for a cooling solution. Maybe a higher quality base that doesn't pinch at the top, with protection on the rails? Is that so ridiculous for a $60 item?

Wrong, USB-C stuff is still very expensive nowadays, especially a properly working USB-C to HDMI adapter that can also charge your device and has multiple USB ports.. Same with a USB-C wall adapter that supplies the correct voltage and wont fry your electronics (hint: the $10 knock offs can damage your components).

I appreciate the thread, OP. I was waffling back and forth on whether or not to get a second dock for my office. (I like playing on my TV in there, but moving the dock back and forth is a hassle. The Switch Dock normally lives in the living room where my wife can play too.) I had decided to pull the trigger, only to find that the dock had suddenly been delisted.

So, again, thanks for the heads up.

I don't see what people are getting upset about here? Yes the dock is larger than the chipset but that's because it holds your Switch in place and it looks nice. Obviously anyone can make it smaller and just have you plug the wires in separately but it's really up to personal preference.

Nintendo's goals with the dock
  • Charge effortlessly by just dropping in. If you have to fiddle with a cable = fail.
  • Emphasize that the system is no loner intended to be held while docked. If you can see the screen (even if the screen turns itself off) = fail.
  • Provide a place to charge the pro controller via USB

That's it, and the dock accomplishes all 3. People wanting solutions where the screen isn't covered or where you fiddle with a USB-C cables to get it on your TV aren't getting it. It doesn't need a fan because the system self cools fine.

Only complaint I have is that I wouldn't mind a dock with a bit more heft as it can slide around when not holding the Switch.
