When people on here say they think Switch sales will collapse, what they really men is they hope they will. ;)
The main demographics of Wii had already abandoned the Wii system for smartphone at the start of 5th year of Nintendo Wii on the market. Nintendo core titles like Galaxy 2 and Skyward Sword performed below the expectation.

Nintendo Switch in the 5th year on the market, on the other hand, still going strong thanks to the main demographics this time is mainly consisted of Nintendo core fans instead of soccer mom and casual gamers. Enhanced port game like Mario 3D world is going to outsold Mario Galaxy 2 in less than a year lol.

Anyone that are hoping for Switch to follow the same pattern as Wii sales trajectory is in for a rude awakening.

PSA:

Switch is selling faster in it's fifth fiscal year than any console in history.

Wii stagnated quite early, Switch has already left it in its rear view mirror.

Switch is a different beast for Nintendo. Wii was falling off the cliff with dry support from Nintendo while there are many big sellers ready to launch at the end of this year and next year.

10-15 million seller - Mario Party
15-20 million seller - Both Pokemons
10 million seller - Splatoon 3
20-25 million seller - BOTW2
3-5 million sellers Mario + Rabbids 2, Metroid, some MH clone
New model

Switch isn't going to collapse like Wii.
I think Mario Party and Splatoon 3 won't reach 10 million, but in any case, there's more games on PS that sell this: Activision, EA,Take 2, Ubisoft, Sony etc that sell over 10 million or over 5 million. The sales of all consoles collapse after its peak, faster or slower.

Switch is selling faster in it's fifth fiscal year than any console in history.
Fake news, DS sold more on its 5th year and if Nintendo's predictions are accurate in the 6th too. Watch the graph in the previous page with the sales compared per fiscal year.

DS is not considered a console while Switch is.

Switch is not a console, it's a hybrid: a portable with tv-out. In fact Switch Lite is a handheld and not a hybrid. So Switch is more a portable than a console.
You can call it console, hybrid or handheld, it doesn't matter, it really doesn't change the fact that Switch is currently Nintendo's main gaming system just like how PS5 is Sony's main system.

Lots of people trying desperately to downplay Switch success as long as possible vs PS. Switch can sell a billion units, and there will be people trying to make it sound like PS sold more.

I'm guessing triggers most people in GAF that "underpower system" is selling well. Just go look at the old threads when Switch was coming out, most them were hoping for Switch would fail.

Since when do we compare handhelds vs home consoles, Technically Switch lite should be separate numbers to the main console.

To me it doesn't make slightest difference, handheld or not, Switch IS currently Nintendo's main gaming system, it is their next generation of their pervious consoles.

But it does matter mate. They've made it the form it is so it could be a portable. It has all the features of a portable. It's a portable. Them giving it a dock doesn't make it a traditional, stationary home console. Otherwise we'll have to consider the PSP Go a traditional home console too. Just the same. A portable, and a dock for TV gaming.

Even phones have docks for TV gaming. Doesn't make them consoles.

That's the whole argument. It's a great portable. We don't need to blur the lines.

Big difference is PSP was never promoted as a TV system and any docks or special cables you need to hook up to a TV are separate purchases and most people probably dont even know about them.

Switch is promoted as a dual action device with a docking station for everyone right from the start.

Like I said it doesn't matter, like it or not majority of game industry and Nintendo themselves are treating as "console".

Exactly.

Give Switch another year or two and it'll pass PS4. Sales are actually trending up as opposed to trending down, so it should be no problem.

Nobody cared about Switch's classification as console, portable or hybrid for unit sales until now when Switch is on track to blow past PS4 in probably about 18 months. So to downplay it, it's now hard classified as a portable so it doesn't count.

But as you said, regardless of classification it'll be Nintendo's best selling hardware and beating PS4 soon (and if it sticks around long enough it might even beat PS2's 150 million).

Some gamers just cant accept that a Nintendo system is selling great and zooming past 360 and PS3 and has it's sights on Sony's other systems.

Again, distinction between "portable" and "console" I've only heard in english, for other languages I've heard everyone call them the same, "consola" in spanish and "geimu" in japanese are two examples I already gave. It doesn't matter what you call it, it's a dedicated gaming device, period.

Main console or not the Switch Lite isn't a home console and it shouldn't be included when comparing home console numbers. I'm not a hater I've got a Switch lite, It just doesn't make sense to compare a handheld to home consoles.

"A home video game console is a video game console that is designed to be connected to a display device, such as a television, and an external power source as to play video games."

Long as Nintendo doesn't bail like it did the final 2 years of the WII, it should be fine. I just don't trust them to continue the level of support they have. COVID has made it worse and feel like they've backed off a bit. At least to me. Then again Pokemon going to drop some bombs late this year and next.

Urrrghhhh, you lot are arguing about what a 'games console' is now?

It's widely recognised that any computer that is made to play games as its main function is main function is a 'console' other than PCs as they traditionally were mainly for work and even now are often used for more than just gaming (yes, even gaming PCs).

From there you have 'handheld (portable) games consoles' and 'home consoles'. 'Consoles' refers to both.

That's it. Super simple. So you can stop moving the damn goalposts.

Truth.

It's a hybrid home console/portable console, advertised as much, even the damn name, Switch, the place where Nintendo puts all of their games. The biggest attraction in all of gaming.

Yep, I never said isn't the current Nintendo's main gaming system or that Sony main system isn't PS5 (technically still is PS4 the most played one but in terms of hardware sales yes, it's PS5).

I forgot MHRG. Yes, It's true that was leaked. And yes, I agree it can end selling 3-5 million.

Regarding the next main Pokemons, I think with Go, Pearl & Diamond and Arceus they will be done in Switch. If they release more will be smaller ones like the Moba, Picross or the F2P puzzle. I think the Switch successor will be released in a couple of years or so and it will get the new batch of remakes and the next main one.

I know, and looking at the tie ratio of the console I think most of them won't repeat with another game of the series, specially in Mario Party.
This doesn’t make any sense. Switch’s tie ratio is extraordinarily high for this point in its life cycle, and it’s doing it without bundled software or digital only games included. They haven’t even done a selects line yet. Their ten million plus sellers have moved those units at full price.

Man it's really pathetic how some people desperately trying to deny the console status of the Switch just to make their favorite plastic look better. Get a life people. Switch's main purpose is gaming so it's a console.

You really will jump through any mind hoops you can for Nintendo sales threads.

Do you ever even talk about actual Nintendo games? All you talk about is how well Nintendo is currently selling, mostly in regards to Japan. Is that the only dog you have in the race in the subject of gaming?

The industry considers Switch a console. That's all that's important in these discussions.
It's portable, it has the portable version of some games, like half of their users got it as second console because (in addition to play the Nintendo games) it's a portable, it has the portable market monopoly and what it makes it different from the other consoles is that it's portable, it get some series of games that previously got other portables and its sales curve seems to have changed from the PS4/Wii model it had before its peak to a more DS-like model during the fiscal year of its peak and the current one if it sells what Nintendo predicted and the Switch Lite is only a handheld, not a console.

So no, the industry consider it a hybrid that is more a portable than a home console. And in the case of Lite, a handheld and not a console.

P.S.: when I say console I mean 'home console'.

Its tie ratio isn't that high compared to other devices at this point of its life cycle, specially the PS ones. The tie ratio includes all the games (or 'sofware units' exactly) sold for Switch included the digital ones and bundled. And yes, it has been sold in many different bundles with games.

Regarding the selects, if Nintendo didn't price cut their games in 5 years and didn't make selects on the 5th year of the console, I think they won't do them later.

Quite a bit of incorrect information here.

It’s only been bundled with a free game on Black Friday with Mario Kart 8, which counts for a very small amount of Switches sold. Other “bundles” have been the full price of the system plus the full price of the game.

Nintendo does not count digital only games in its software totals; Sony does. So comparisons between the two are not apples to apples. Regardless, Switch already has a tie rate over 7, and it will only grow as the system ages.

Nintendo Selects have launched anywhere from 3-6 years after launch of a system. Switch is approaching 4 1/2 years since launch. If such a line is coming, it could launch anytime in the next two years and still be consistent with pest systems. However, given the length of this console’s life is projected to be longer, they may wait longer to launch the line. They‘ve done one for every system except for NES and virtual boy.

This where the real benefit of consolidating into one device comes in. In 2011 Nintendo had teams developing games for Wii, Wii U, DS and 3DS. In 2021 probably all their teams are working on Swtich.

COVID hurt them like everyone else, but in 2021 they are publishing roughly 1 game per month and after the September Direct we should have a better look at their 2022 line up. I'm expecting that next year they will publish at a similar rate.

It's not really an argument, it's just people coping with the fact that their favorite toy isn't number 1.

Switch is by definition a console and it's number 1, there's not much to discuss there.
Yes, it must be hard for some people.

Thinking how an underpowered, "kiddie" console, that doesn't rely on "cinematic" scripted games, is selling like there's no tomorrow...WORLDWIDE...

It really doesn't matter what it is. Nintendo is still killing it. People categorising this a "home console" are the ones who have the war mentality though to try and claim a win. For what purpose? Does it matter? You can't have switch lite included in the numbers and then say these are home console sales though logically. To deny that the switch's main selling point is its portability is also denying the truth. Having a dock doesn't negate that.

Otherwise samsung have the best selling PC in the form of a Galaxy phone or something equally as daft. The question is does it matter to anyone other than warriors trying to score some win?

It’s categorized as a home console by the industry sales trackers, not the console warriors. Quite a few of the latter are determined that it not be considered a home console for whatever reason. 🤷‍♂️

I don't care about home or handheld. Those are video game consoles, because their main purpose is gaming. And believe it or not, a smartphone's main purpose is still to phone, so it's not a pc. I don't own a Switch btw and don't give a shit who sells more plastic toys as long as everybody sells enough to continue.

Which sales trackers? This is Zhuges graphs. If I were any decent tracker I wouldn't even care about the distinction and call them game consoles.

People use smartphones now instead of dumb phones for a reason and it's not because they like swiping to end a call.
A lot of people will buy switch for its portability but it doesn't mean they don't like to also play at home. I'm just saying to deny that people buy switch due to its portability is to bury your head in the sand. The 3DS sold gangbusters vs the Wii U even though they were both "video game consoles". As far as I know 3DS sold more than the PS2 even. Switch is not only Wii U's successor but also the 3DS'.

NPD has separated home and portable consoles for decades, and has categorized Switch as the former. I don’t think it matters, as it’s a hybrid, so it’s both by definition. It’s really only relevant when tracking sales across generations.

Don't NPD call them "hardware platforms" and group hardware sales for switch and switch lite?
I've not seen them separate it for years.

You cant compare handheld sales to consoles I hate how this industry let's fanboys rewrite the rules. Nintendo fans dont want to be left out of console sell conversation well they need to tell Nintendo to make a console then.

I'm guessing triggers most people in GAF that "underpower system" is selling well. Just go look at the old threads when Switch was coming out, most them were hoping for Switch would fail.
Which is also why they hope Steamdeck gores the Switch now. Remember all of the "IT RUNS SWITCH GAMES BETTER THAN SWITCH" videos.
