Switch wi fi is atrocious for me (READ MOD POST)

Finally started testing out the wifi signal strength yesterday. I only get 3 bars in my living room where the router is, and the adjacent bedroom. That's it. I did however get an A in the connection type and got pretty good speeds for download and upload. God I hope they can patch the wifi card somehow for more strength.

Mine after a while the wifi simply doesn't work, as if it were disable and can't detect any wifi and of course is not on airplane mode.

Mine is fine. Currently about 25 ft away with 2 dry walls in the way.

Wireless AC 5ghz. Netgear ex7300 extending from a netgear x4s in the main house. No issues with the zelda update download or connecting on my end.

If you're having issues, keep troubleshooting. Check your wifi settings on your router and the location, keep it up above obstructions and in a central location, use 5ghz if available. If you're too far, use 2.4 which does much better wall penetration

Can't say I have had any trouble with my wi-fi setup.

I think when it comes to playing games online will be the bigger test in terms of lag.

I couldn't watch the entire Mario Kart 8 overview trailer in the news section without it disconnecting and wasn't able to complete a full race in Fast RMX online.

The one thing I hadn't actually tried was restarting the Switch. But now that I have I was able to watch the Mario Kart 8 trailer in full and play several full races of Fast RMX.

Maybe I've just gotten lucky or having the Switch in sleep mode starts to cause the Wi-Fi some trouble. I don't think I'd actually turned the console off since I got it. Hold the power button and some power options will appear where you can restart or power off the system.

My download/upload speeds are still reading slower than I expect on the test screen but at least I was able to play some RMX online finally.

The wifi on my switch hasn't worked for 2 days. Was showing 1-2 bars, however all attempts to get onto the E-Shop and Internet test connections timed out and failed. I eventually did a hard reset and got it working again, but I've had to do that twice in a week.

I call Nintendo and for their tech support on the phone. In short, they were useless and had the gall to ask my to get a router range extender when my switch is sitting behind one wall twenty feet from my router.

Every other device I have (iPhones, Kindle, iPads, Xbox, PS4, laptop, etc) shows full bars in the same area that my switch is docked. I have a 200 MB download connection, and all devices test out at 50-100 MB on connection tests. Switch shows 1-2 bars and 5-10 MB download on Internet test connection.

I have about 20+ hours logged jnto Zelda, and have a tempered glass screen protector perfectly installed, so I'm not dying to take this thing back. That said, I find it hard to believe my Switch and its current WiFi performance is normal.

Looking for opinions here. Wait it out and hope for better signal via future firmware updates, or take it the shorts now on the screen protector and Zelda save and return to retail???

My new Switch's wifi is not working correctly but it is especially bad when in docked mode... yesterday it was ok-ish (2/3 bars, less than 2m from the router in plain sight) but today it's the only system which gets 0 bars instead of full bars when in my entertainment cabinet (open)... PS4, WiiU and laptop all grab the full signal and yet Switch would fail to connect until I moved the dock out of the open cabinet and put it on top near the tv (which I won't be able to do normally since the dock+Switch goes higher than my tv's bezel thus obstructing the screen)... what the heck is wrong with my Switch? Is this normal? It can't be... damn if I got a faulty unit

For some reason my wifi works perfectly in portable mode but the instant I dock it, it disconnects and refuses to connect. I have tried everything from puttting my password in again as well as restarting and it still says that it cannot find the IP address. Its worrying me as when MK8D comes out, I'm gonna be using online a lot. Hopefully Nintendo patch it before then.

So mine is crappy but only vita level crappy not impossible to use.

I read that the antenna is directly below the cart slot? Anyone do any tests with a cart in and cart out?

Getting 1 bar, not very far away, glad im not alone! How did reviewers miss this...

It probably happens only with specific router/router settings.

Try changing channel, if the router auto channel is on in a crowded setting it probably choose not recommended channels like 12 or 13. "Save" channel for most devices are 1, 6 or 11, even when crowded they are often the fastest, other channels are more in danger of losing connection, even when they seem not as crowded.

Haven't posted in this thread in a bit. Since I sent my first Switch back, I was fortunate enough to find another. Same poor wifi with the second one.

Wifi does not seem to be as common of an issue as say the joycon sync amd bent dock (I got that this time around too, yay). That said, the only places I've had the opportunity to test all have Frontier as the ISP (formerly Verizon), and two have the Actiontec modem/router combo, and one is Westell if I recall correctly. This may mean nothing, but I throw it out there in case others have the same setup.

I'm not going to send this one back. I find it hard to believe I got two bad wifi chips in a row. There has to be another underlying cause here.

I was having the same issues and I googled for the solutions.

To connect to the wifi, just enter your modem settings and find the option to change the security to a different one. I don't remember the one I picked, but that instantly solved the wifi issues.

Then, I couldn't access the eshop. All I did was add 8.8.8.8 on the DNS entry of the modem. I reset the modem and Switch and it worked perfectly.

Has everyone tried to do both processes?

I got the Switch yesterday and yeah the wifi was bad. My house wifi is 2G and my PC and phone both have full bar signal at where I sit but the Switch is flickering between rock bottom and middle signal for some reason.

Wifi strength is definitely an issue for my switch, one floor down from the router and I get the minimum signal bar.

When doing a speed test versus my iPhone in the same room, I get 1.9mbs download speed with switch and 7mbs download on my iPhone....

Without a doubt something is not right with the switch wifi, out of all my wifi enabled devices the switch has the poorest reception and slowest download speed.

I've found the apparent cause of my disconnecting woes.

Playing with wireless controllers is causing my wifi connection to drop and I have no idea why.

I can play online with no issues at all in handheld mode.
When I swap to table top or docked mode with either the joycons or the Pro Controller my connection gets dropped shortly after.

I couldn't get into a game of Splatoon or Fast RMX when using a wireless controller. In handheld mode everything is perfect.

I tried it with both a cartridge in and out, but the results were the same.
Anyone else having these same issues? I think my symptoms were fairly unique earlier in the thread. I might contact Nintendo next week but for now I'm happy to play handheld and I have LAN adapter on the way,

Error Code: 2110-3127

Ever since trying to get into the Splatoon 2 global testfire, I've been having network problems on this console.

Apparently it has something to do with my DNS but I have correctly entered the manual number and still no success. The worst part is even if with random successes of internet connectivity, the in-system connectivity test just fails despite noticing my friend list is working fine OR THE FACT THAT THE SIGNAL SYMBOL IS WORKING!

And I am doing all of this while being next to my router.

I've never had this problem before until now and what do you know, EVERY OTHER DEVICE is still connected just fine. =/

EDIT: Apparently I had to just shut down the Switch for it to work.......still! >=/

Yep me too, even next to the router it's on 2 bars and shows 0 bars when one room away. Phones and laptops still show full signal at that point.

Seems like it's very sensitive to interference or something...The most worrying to me is the poor signal even right next to the router.

I had a problem where the console connected to the router at a friends place but wouldn’t connect to the internet. Turning the console off and on again fixed it, but I hope it's not going to be an issue.

Been having issues since day one. Same story which has been told by others, other devices (consoles) work perfectly on wifi with adequate range. It doesn't cope well if you have different SSID's in you house too. Seems to have a hard time switching (ha ha) between them.

Some of the wifi issues sound so unacceptably bad that I would seriously consider calling nintendo and asking for repair. My router is not in the same room and wifi works perfectly 2.5GHz, 5GHz and even sharing my Phone's 4G it's working as it should. :/

My wifi works flawlessly. It doesn't always show full bars though. I'm on a 12 mb connection and my downloads go smoothly, the Testfire last night went well and Shovel Knight/I Am Setsuna downloaded without a hitch. Pretty quickly too. Not sure if this helps but I'm using AT&T with the WiFi turned off and my own router, an ASUS AC1900 with the T-Mobile branding. I don't have any special settings, but I'd be happy to check on them when I get home if anybody does want to know. I'm also on a 5 GHz frequency.

I ended up giving up on my Switch's WiFi and getting a lan adapter and some powerline adapters.

When I first got the Switch on launch day and was setting it up I immediately noticed how weak the WiFi was in an area where I'd never had any problems with other devices. I was getting 1 bar and a pathetically low download speed when testing the connection. I also noticed that it was worse when docked than undocked and that watching videos in the news section was basically impossible.

First I tried a signal booster that was plugged in literally right next to the Switch. It literally couldn't be any closer. Well it got me up to a stable 2 bars and the download speed improved in the connection test in settings. But still half the download speed of all my other devices, including my PS4. As a test, I undocked the Switch to see if getting 3 bars was even possible. I literally had to hold it directly next to the signal booster and even then it didn't hold it consistently.

I gave up in the end and am now just using the LAN adapter. This is literally the only thing that has gotten me speed on a par with my other devices.

Honestly, worst WiFi experience I've had with a piece of electronics for years. How this didn't show up in testing I don't know. It's insanely weak.

Good info here and in the splatoon thread. Couldn't stay in an entire match without getting booted using my 2.4 channel. Switch was showing 250 Kbps down 30 Kbps up when it worked. Changed to my 5 channel and things were solid at 45 Mbps down and 6 Mbps up. Pretty trash wifi on this for 2.4, going to have to pick up a usb lan adapter.

I have this one weird issue though. When I use wifi at home with our router everything else works perfectly but when I try to buy something from eshop I can't access credit card screen at all and I've tried multiple times. It just gives me a white screen and then I have to use the home button. When I use my workplace's wifi or tether 4G with my phone I can add my credit card info without problems. I have no idea what could cause this since I can download and play games online just fine. Hmmm. I even wondered if it's my "funny" ssid that is causing problems. My ssid is C:/Virus.exe

I am also affected by the bad wifi range on the Switch. The last update did not fix this issue. The wifi range and speed is an issue (and before anything is said, I understand how to setup a network and all my other devices including an old ipad have no issue). When the console is docked, the Wifi speed drops dramatically. I even put the Switch half in and half out of the docking station and got the drop in internet speed. I am returning it till they fix this issue, because if it can be fixed by a software update, then that is great. I, however, won't be waiting to find out because it is probably a hardware issue. It is a really good console though. I guess that is why everyone says "never buy a console at launch."

I don't understand how Nintendo keeps making the Wi-Fi range for their consoles smaller and smaller.

My Switch can barely get a connection docked. At least I can move it closer in handheld mode, but it is still lame.

Wifi is no good for switch in my house where other devices manage okay in the same room. Fortunately I've got a LAN adapater and that works great.

Thanks to my setup, I have been able to move my router close enough to my Switch that I can consistently get 3 bars. Still, the wi-fi range is the biggest issue I have with the system. Go farther than ~1 meter away from the router and the wi-fi strength falls by a bar. It's ridiculous.

The actual speeds are still pretty OK even when I don't have a full connection, but that's besides the point.

Mine was awful for like two weeks. I rebooted the Switch, deleted the connection info, unplugged and cold reset my router twice, and re-input the wireless connection into my Switch again, and it's been working decently since. It's rarely ever three bars, despite being seven feet from my relatively new dual band router.

Having said that, when I did get it to work, because of the Splatoon beta, i never had any connection issues in the beta. I played in Splatoon a total of two hours over one day.

I just returned mine. I wasn't going to risk this being a hardware issue. I will just wait till a revision comes out in the summer when the console has more games. The WiFi was unacceptable for a $300 gaming console. Nintendo had since launch to fix it and the last update did nothing. There is no word that they even recognize the problem. I wasn't going to be waiting six months out for a fix or having to send it in to get repaired/a refurbished console.

I thought maybe my new router wasn't optimized for channels etc, but turns out it's got its channels all for itself and my 3DS has max bars where my Switch has 0 to 1.

In the same room I play Mario Kart 7 on the 3DS without problems I couldn't connect to Splatoon 2 at all, had to move out to the router.

Might get an Ethernet adapter for MK8, I never cared much for wi-fi.

I don't know if it can "help" anyone but for me the WiFi works perfectly in handheld mode.
It stops working when I detach the joycons.
Signal problem... ?

oh man that stinks. switch wifi has been, by far, the best and quickest downloads I've had on any console (not counting PC).

EVERYONE PLEASE JUST DO A HARD RESET ON YOUR SWITCH

Hold down the power button for a few seconds and reboot. This fixes the problem for most people.

As for the weak wi-fi signal. Well that's still a problem.

what you mean for "hard reset"? simply turn off and on the console?

Had to do this a week ago, fixed my internet issues.
Too bad I did it after the Testfire weekend. :(

The issue improves for a few minutes but is not resolved

Bumping this one as I'm trying to get my Switch online with a steady connection...

I'm having little luck on either 2.4GHz or 5GHz unless I'm really close to the router. I've scanned for free channels (went with 11 on 2.4GHz), and set it 20MHz rather than 20+40Mhz, but didn't improve things. I've done a full system shutdown and restart, which helps when the wifi locks up and refuses to connect to anything, but hasn't improved signal strength.

So my temp fix was to connect an old 802.11g Linksys router to my existing network, skipping the actual routing bit with WAN port and DHCP etc, and well, it works, and I'm now getting 2-3 bars some 5 meters away.

Anyway, is there any consensus on if the Wifi is just bad, or if there are some units that are worse than others? I might grab a LAN adapter but that won't really help with handheld mode, which is how I mainly play it.

Man, I thought I was fine, but today it was a mess. It ranged from great to no connection to slow very fast.

I fear this issue will blow out with Mario Kart. Everyone be warned.

Btw, is this hardware or software related?
