PSP sold like 80 million units. It’s true though, it’s extremely hard to got to bat against Nintendo in the portable space. It will be interesting to see how Xcloud does. It’s unlikely it will get much traction but who knows.
80 million for a Playstation is a failure, and the Vita was almost as big a disaster as the WiiU. I completely understand why Sony would decide not to waste time and money, as well as dividing their output, on a third device guaranteed to not gain any real traction.

Gamepass meanwhile is all marketing hype.

There's nothing to suggest it will be any less of a failure than Stadia and every other game streaming service that has ever or will ever exist. It just can't work properly.

Expect it to be talked up like it's the inevitable future of gaming by every mainstream media outlet and fanboy until it hits the market, only to mysteriously stop being talked about within 3 months, then only vaguely referenced again in MS earning calls thereafter.

I will always maintain that Sony should have found a way to make a partnership with Sega going into the PSVita.

They already had the audience after the PSP did alright, now they just needed those games which were as accessible and fun (maybe not on Nintendos level) which Sega have shown that they can produce.

Oh well, moment passed.

Now the real challenge starts now.
Nintendo already released all the big games they have.
Next Zelda, Next Mario, Next Pokemon, next animal Crossing, next smash and next mario kart won’t have the same effect in hardware.
Price cut and new models are the next step so Nintendo is entering on what’s the next new big thing? and this where Nintendo struggles mid way up to end.

Nintendo will also now compete with PS5 and to some extent xbox series x. The newest thing. 2021-2022 will be tougher for Switch.
Less 3rd party since big 3rd party will move on to the newest hardware.

AC looks like the most boring game ever and 22mil people bought that shit? i would say Nintendo fans are suckers for buying this but i said it before and got a warning so i'm not saying it this time no sir

but i guess the no 3rd party support for Switch is working great for Nintendo

You say this like the PS4 best sellers list isn’t chock full of CoD, Madden, 2k, GTA, etc. and the best selling Sony games are Uncharted and Spider-Man, derivative knock offs or sequels.

Different people like different stuff, doesn’t make them suckers.

Cool but just stop comparing Switch with PS4/Xbox. It’s 🍎 and 🍊. Or parallel universes. One is clearly aimed at parents to buy for their kids to play (when they’re still small), casual women gamers or retirees. Do I need to remind what demographics play PS4/Xbox? I don’t think so.

You could also write about mobile gaming while you’re at it. It’s also huge.

Nintendo's real struggle is producing the Switch to meet the demand.

Animal Crossing won't stop selling
BOTW won't stop selling
SMO won't stop selling
Smash won't stop selling
Pokemon won't stop selling
MK8D won't stop selling
SMP won't stop selling
RFA won't stop selling

Nintendo could practically releasing 0 game this later year and still outsells both PS5 and XSX without dropping a sweat lol.

Jim.
Because they can't.

They don't have those type of pickup and play anywhere games that Nintendo specialise in.

League of their own.
This was I think the reason the PSP/Vita didn’t sell as well. Despite being the better systems
They just tried to create console experiences on a handheld. Meaning you can’t pick up play a game Progress and repeat on a daily commute. The game designs didn’t reflect this. They wanted to go with it’s a handheld console.
The DS/3DS etc had games designed around the mentality of play a bit hook you in progress and repeat.

Plus Nintendo has had years in the handheld market. They understand how to design games etc around the handheld aspect

i mean Nintendo released 20+ million sellers (and half of that are big ones) on a 3 and a half years old hardware.
You can dislike all of them but you can't say it's not enough to please people with different tastes than you....

There is so much tears and angry here when it comes to sales, specially Nintendo numbers. No new games, "same" games sells too much year after year, Nintendo should stop making games/go 3rd party so sony&MS boys could buy those same games they ignore or hate so much now. Also Nintendo should make super ultra rtx 300$/€ machine and "compete" with other samey machines. What else... :messenger_smiling_with_eyes:

Wonder where the switch will end up sales wise? I’m thinking at least 120 million. A pro version could push that number even higher.

Already passed X1 LTD in the last quarter.

The best part, Nintendo recorded the highest operating profit for Q1 than any other gaming companies of all time.

What was this number?

Bro. When the PS5 hits the market it will outsell the Switch easily. The Switch has benefited from being the newer console for 3 years.

120 million not happenning. At some point Nintendo will need to release another console to keeep up with third party. 100 million Switch consoles I see happening, though.

I think you're seriously underestimating both the widespread appeal amongst adults and 'hardcore gamers' of Nintendo, as well as the ubiquity and mass appeal of Playstation.

They're both worldwide brands with broad appeal to old and young alike, and plenty of fans amongst both genders.

Sure, they differ slightly in their marketing, as either a more family friendly or more of a 'grown up' brand, but the overlap in audience demographics, especially on a worldwide scale, is far greater than their differences.

Even Xbox, with it's 'dudebro' stereotypes, still wants to (and desperately tries to) appeal to everyone.

I think this idea that they're not just competing, broadly similar brands is a very American influenced thing, probably as a result of Nintendo being the first back into the market after the US games crcrasof the 80's.

There was an entire generation of lost gamers, immediately followed by Nintendo swooping in to reframe gaming as a 'boys toy', it not really being until Playstation hit the market that gaming started to shift back to targeting an older audience again

This keft nostalgia (and eventually the success of the niche they then found themselves in) painting Nintendo forever into the 'kiddie corner' in most Americans eyes.

It's like the myth rhat the Wii sold so well because is appealed to a whole new audience, completely ignoring the fact that a huge chunk of the 150m audience of the PS2 were ordinary people that never played games before, and bought one for party games, cheap shovelware and dvd playback.

22.4 million in about 3 months is insane, let alone for an exclusive. Very high digital ratio too.

Anyway, all these numbers are exceptional. Love to see it going super well for them.
For how long we waited for a new AC Im glad it's doing well

Who is buying New Super Mario Bros U? Hello! Mario Maker 2 exists and is right there. Mario Maker 2 is objectively a much better deal and game. You'd think sales would drop when Mario Maker 2 hits stores.

Would those new games/experiences be the endless AAA games that appear year after year, but just with nicer graphics?, in the end of the day none of us want things to change all that much, although we often complain that things are not all that different in our favorite games, then when a developer reacts and makes some radical changes to an existing franchise, the moaning starts all over again.

So in a nutshell, we all want change as long as it does not make the game all that different to the one we already like, yes sounds totally reasonable to me. ;)

These guys want one thing, Nintendo to go multi platform and stop making consoles, then all these kiddie orientated non innovating games will be the best thing since sliced bread, and they will be all over them like a rash. ;)

Of course the launch will spike like any other new console launch, but is it gonna maintain that momentum throughout its life? The Switch had been surpassing PS4 YoY sales, even with one less holiday season compared. You think PS5 will outsell its last predecessor, the PS4 in a similar timeframe?

Xbox is not fucking up their launch this time around (we'll see for now), at least half of the console market consisted of casuals playing COD/FIFA can stolen back by Xbox, and the promise of better performance of other 3rd parties. There's some potential for that scenario to happen.

PS5 is still a new clean slate of generation change that Sony had to cross carefully.

Also 120 millions is not impossible, the YoY vs top console charts just says otherwise, and Nintendo themselves promises that Switch generation to be longer than their previous iteration.

Pokemon gotta step up and not just graphically. Upgrade every single effing thing in that franchise. Make a true open world rpg. Better story, quests, improve the battle systems, how you traverse the world, voice acting...

Few more big hitters and a hardware update and its not unreasonable to expect it to surpass PS4 sales (108m?) over the next few years?
Wait, so a 3rd of their install base bought Animal Crossing? That's insane.

Wow, go Nintendo.

I rarely play gamespast sequel #3 and prefer somthing new. And for a creator using the same assets, same genre for decades, what a waste.

It will likely break 80 million early to mid next year, it will crack 100 million easily and beyond, I love this view that Nintendo needs to release hardware for third parties when the system barely gets any as is. If nothing else it taking a few years will make it more likely that downports from ps5 are plausible, if they release a new system in the next year or 2 there is no way the hardware would be a big enough bump for that.

I didn't say Nintendo fans are suckers don't change my words

I don't play sports games or COD, but atleast you do "something" in those games

AC is what? you plant and grow and trade shit? where is the game? this looks like the most boring shit ever created

but enjoy i guess

*looks at avatar

God of War is what? You sit and watch a ton of scripted cutscenes and when you finally get to control you tap a button over and over to punch and hack shit? Where is the game? I think anyone who buys such a simple thing has to be a sucker.

See how easily you can misunderstand and be reductionist about something? Maybe there is something about Animal Crossing that speaks to the 22 million people who have bought it and enjoy it. Heck, maybe I'll go buy it now for spite. :messenger_smiling_horns:

Damn! Animal Crossing is beastly. I must admit I've never played an Animal Crossing game but those sales make me think I might be missing out on something 🤔
