Take a famous franchise and give it a new genre, will it work?

Pikmin Twin Stick Shooter.

You star as Captain Olimar or a new character. Similar to Robotron 2084, but instead of firing lasers, you're throwing Pikmin at a rapid rate onto enemies, who quickly lose health and die. Switch between Pikmin as some work better then others against certain enemy types.

Humans are replaced with ship parts that are collected for bonus points. The game is frantic and fast paced with all sorts of alien life coming your way.

I'd buy this in a heartbeat.

Super Smash Bros + TCG

You have all the characters and franchises, every player is a master hand (you can choose portraits to customise your character, maybe even Miis) and each card is a fighter from Nintendo.

You can have expansions related to the franchises and characters, even add some amiibo functionality.

This could work since you could play not only in switch, 3ds but also phone, saving progress between all platforms and you can go on playing where you want when you want.

It could also be the perfect GAAS for Nintendo and even use the Nintendo Coins to buy new decks.

OP, I took it one step further.

I tried to imagine a developer's chances with another genre: Rockstar Games and anything but sandbox/open-world shit.

Nope, doesn't work.

Persona series.

Instead of going into dungeons, you focus on volleyball club. The better your social links and relationships with team members/other students, the more skills you unlock and the moral will increase. And of course the bulk of gameplay is an arcade style hype as shit version of this:

Bioshock as a city-building game. Select an era, a gimmick (underwater city, floating city, space station city, etc) and watch all hell break loose.

Many games/franchise could really use persona style calendar system imo. Especially sports anime where a lot of main focus of the genre is likeable characters and the bulk of story is usually either character drama, training arc, and battle.

I completely agree. A lot of great sports anime such as Ace no Diamond and Haikyuu!! could work perfectly in a Persona style game.

But unfortunately I don't think we'll ever get that :(
