So why have MS not shown us the velocity architecture other than state of decay loading in 12 seconds.

Why have we not seen anything on XSX, or when called out it was just a PC....

Phil says he has one in his house now, sounds a bit PR, show us the damn console running a game with super fast loading. Maybe they cant yet is the only logical conclusion....

Halo pop in was that bad it almost melted my eyeballs.

There is something up I can smell it.
Cause the Series X marketing is mostly trash. They haven't shown any games running natively on the Series X yet. We really haven't seen anything running realtime on PS5 either everything is "Captured on PS5" which could mean a multitude of things. Sony has been much more intelligent about their marketing.

As for the Halo pop in and other bad elements could be explained by 343 simply not having the time to compile a Series X build of the game that utilizes the full features set of the console. It could also be explained by sheer incompetence on behalf of the development team. Really it's probably just down to the whole COVID-19 pandemic putting roadbloacks in the development path that they did not has contigency plans for. We'll likely never know.

Did the lucid dream of the SSD that Mark Cerny presented live up to expectations? We've seen the "jump into portal wait 7 seconds for the next level to load" in 2 games now Ratchet and Clank and Astros playroom. The whole "game changing" SSD hasn't been as impressive as the road to PS5 would have led you to believe either.

Both companies will need to show much more than they have to display the claims they've made with the specs of their respective consoles.

From the Series X we've heard words like "conservative" " sustained" and "consistent"
Which is considerably different from the "peak" "variable" "theoretical" messages we've gotten from the PS5 so far. Time will tell, both consoles have very robust architectures and are equally impressive in their own rights.

Spiderman was 0.8 seconds load, state decay was 12 seconds load.

But but but but.

Excuses and words have worn thin, so has PR speak and giving things fast sounding names. Its not power of da cloud crap again.

Show us.

I think we'll a be better off once we accept that Sony will probably have the best looking games this generation.

If they do, it won't be through Naughty Dog unless that studio gets a top-to-bottom work culture revamp. They've bled through talent and had to resort to hiring film animators to do work on the game since they burned through game-specific animators, as just one example of their bad workplace culture.

I'm expecting some visual bangers from most of Sony's studios this gen, no doubt. But I'm expecting a lot of MS's AAA stuff to measure right up there and probably best some of Sony's efforts. FS2020 currently looks better than any of Sony's shown 1st party PS5 games, tho I'm interested to know what the Series X version will actually look like once that comes.

Doesn’t this guy claim to be an engineering student?

Yep, which makes it that much more embarrassing. Again, good surface-level understanding of general concepts from them, but they seem like the sort who just takes in info but doesn't critically analyze it or understand the concepts behind that info. That can easily compromise high-thought analysis in these kind of subjects.

Spiderman was 0.8 seconds load, state decay was 12 seconds load.

It was exactly 6.6 seconds, falling in line with the raw SSD specs, an unoptimized dirty dump, and also had a save operation alongside that.

Stretching from 6.6 to 12 is impossible unless it's a figment of your imagination.

Yep.

I'll make a similar thread about Austin Evans then.

Will look forward to that then. I don't watch a ton of Evans' content, but from what I've seen he doesn't profess to being an engineer or game dev either, FWIW.

But it’s not true. And if you had made your research you wouldn’t have put it up there. The thought alone that MS would decide to show their flagship on a mid tier pc is hilarious by itself. Never gonna happen.

And regarding XVA? I mean, was this planned from the beginning or not? The console was announced in November and early this year they were hyping the damn thing and now I’m supposed to believe XVA wasn’t working as of a couple of months ago?

So the pitch is Halo was shown in a mid tier PC because XVA/XSX wasn’t ready and MS doesn’t have direct storage tools ready on PC either and that’s why.... wait what?

Like I said, this is what other people have said. And they could be bullshitting. But if the idea is MS have been behind on their devkits is true, then it's not a completely unreasonable point of speculation to assert, either.

There are aspects to XvA that have been in development for a while, such as BCPack, as they are software-bound aspects of the XvA specification. Also like I mentioned earlier some parts of XvA are not actually primed for PC at this time, they are only indicated for the Series systems at this time AFAIK (like certain hardware for SFS in the GPU (the mip-blending hardware), etc.)

Yes there are lots of excuses, old this, driver that, Covid, sun was shining at mid day.

Maybe B3d dev is correct.

My take, fast SSD streaming through changing th3 Xbox file system IO apis and software is a big job and also needs to work on Windows which has a huge bloated IO system that the game part has to be compatible with every windows application on the planet for PC / XBOX development, and its a MAJOR project. I will agree it works when I see it and not before

it really seems that many people think that the GPU can just render everything the SSD throws at it 🙃

That's not the point. The actuality is the gpu can only render based on source data that is memory resident, improving i/o throughput vastly increases the amount of data that can be accessed over time. Its not about what it can do per frame, its what it can do over an arbitrary number of sequential frames.

This is a huge deal, because the ability to completely refresh and replace the maximum amount of data the gpu can rasterize within a few frames is transformative in terms of scoping what is to be drawn, liberating the flow of the game from the shackles of having to keep all pertinent data resident at all times.

7 seconds portal load times in Ratchet & Clank? ROFL did you play the trailer back at one third of the speed?

Ratchet & Clank has been the only game shown doing fast loading so far.
Wait Ratchet and clank had 7 second load times?
Gonna need to see some receipts for that one.
I am a fish, I know when something smells fishy.

show me those 7 seconds please in Rachet.

I was being being facetious which is why I put it in quotes. I haven't watched the gameplay since the reveal and I never timed it it's probably closer to 4 or 5 seconds if I had to guess. My point was that it was not instant, It's still using portals to mask a loading screen just like the new astros playroom game does as well. The picture painted by Cerny in the Road to PS5 video (as well as some of the posts users were making online) was that of a world without those hidden load screens. So I found it quite ironic when R&C displayed them, even moreso when the Astrobots playroom demo also displayed them. My other point though, was that it's too early in the generation to judge anything based on that. These technologies are very immature and devs will need time to utilize these feature to their fullest potential. Future games may improve upon this just like future games may improve upon the pop in we saw in the Halo trailer.

From blackscreen to blackscreen is from 0:15 to 0:23 in that video...

So between 7-8 seconds for an unoptimized load of a shitty xbox one x game. It's 6.5 seconds when using quick resume to switch between xbox one x versions of games on the Series X. Probably going to be about 8 seconds or less to switch between Series X games.

The DirectStorage API should speed things up quite a bit on the I/O end of things. Also, the fact that this is already loading an unoptimized xbox one x game running on a legacy I/O API in 7-8 seconds makes me curious as to how much DirectStorage could improve upon this further.

R&C rift apart has real-time gameplay, UE5 is running real-time on PS5. Try again.

I'll concede that, I shouldn't have exaggerated by saying "we haven't seen anything". We have seen those 2 demos confirmed realtime on PS5 amongst others like godfall. Saying everything was a bit too far i should have said "Nothing of substance" like a significant chunk of gameplay like the 8 minute Halo demo. While 2 demos is not much it's still much more than the Minecraft demo we've seen running on Series X so far lol.

Sony uploaded the announcement trailer for R&C but they strangely haven't uploaded that R&C gameplay segment they showed during the showcase. When he jumps in that portal in the middle of the gameplay segment he doesn't arrive in a different world it looks like he lands in what appears to be a different part of the same world he was already in followed by a scene cut. The trailer was quite impressive but the actual gameplay demo doesn't seem quite as impressive.

The UE5 demo was running real-time at 2k 30 fps. It's very likely the Series X could run that demo as well at those performance targets. Visually it was very impressive but that trade-off in performance for fidelity shouldn't become normalized or acceptable at this point. It was also a very smart investment by Sony to have a Demo prepared where they can say "This is running on a PS5, This is what Next Gen Gaming will look like on a PS5".

That's where MS dropped the ball. It doesn't seem like they have anything prepared that can showcase the power of the Series X. Maybe they have something up their sleeve for Gamescom but I'm not going to hold out hope for that.

The overall point I was trying to make was that people need to be more skeptical of the information they receive. "Captured on PS5" does not always mean "Running real-time" which also does not mean "gameplay demo" which is purposely confusing. The youtuber who is the topic of this thread takes information given by Sony, as well as information given by Microsoft, and twists it to fit his narrative. The Unreal Engine 5 demo probably takes up alot of storage space due to the high quality assests and should be treated as a fringe example of what devs are capable of if they focus 7 months into a 10 minute gameplay demo. Instead, people use it to say "all ps5 games will look like this". Same deal with the HZD2 trailer some people call that a real-time gameplay trailer when there is literally 0 gameplay in it and whether it is real-time has yet to be confirmed. Just like how people point to the poor demo of Halo that wasn't even running on a Series X (this was such a silly decision by Microsoft) as indication that the Series X is a weak console, when the hardware specs indicate otherwise and we (unfortunately) haven't seen any Series X games running on it except Minecraft. Certain people take the things that these Youtubers say at face value and then regurgitate it as truth in other places spreading false narratives everywhere. These people also take vague allusions given by the companies and run off into the sunset with them instead of researching before jumping to conclusions.

Youtubers like Innocenceii state false opinions as facts and give their credentials, "an engineering student", as a way of trying to indicate that they are incapable of being wrong. It's sad because he clearly has alot of technical knowledge and his video editing style is enjoyable, but when he talks about the Series X he purposely misrepresents facts as truth for some reason (Clear Sony Bias). Gladly, I haven't seen much of his false narratives outside of his youtube channel.

If you are wrong, just say so, it was extremely dishonest + disingenuous to try and make the r+c video seem a lot worse than it was. Don't do that, be better.

All I know and care about is that next gen games look way better than before, and have features that wow me in a way a non tech guy like me can see and feel right away.
No amount of technobabble will convince me either one system is better than the other, or if both are better than the one already under my TV, if the results fail to impress my own eyes and brain.

It shouldn't take an engineer to tell loadtimes, resolution, framerate are all dependent on how the developer will use the hardware. It will differ for every game. Just like every generation. Same thing will graphics. Unless you are a game developer, possibly the developer of the very game in question itself, you can speculate but in the end you have no idea whether it is hardware or a question of talent that is behind what you're seeing.

Remember this?

But ultimately, this is what you get as the gen goes on...

Really hoping I'll get to Play this game, but I never understood how people said it showed off the ssd.

Literally unloads one world, and reloads an entire new world of different geometry, textures, lighting, particle effects, enemies, post processing, etc. in 2 seconds or less.

Not even 10K RPM Raptors in raid could do that. Nor can the majority of the current SSDs on the PC’s I/O.

Have none of you played portal?

Bro, seriously?

I have no problems admitting when I'm wrong. I was not trying to be right. I typed out a reply quickly I did not think that people like you would latch on to one part of my post and nag about it. Especially cause I thought that by putting it in quotes it would be easy to see how it was a purposeful exageration. MaYbE I ShOuLd HavE uSeD SpoNgeBOb TeXt. I literally picked a random number between 1 and 10 and shat that out. Cause really, to me, anything under 10 seconds is ridiculously fast compared to current gen. But does not quite meet the standard of instant

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I'm not trying to make it worse than it is, I never even said it was a bad thing. I am not claiming to be an expert. I am not trying to sell you on a console. I'm just some dude on the internet that likes tech™. I was just pointing out how it isn't really "Seamless" or "Instantaneous" like Cerny said it would be. There is a greater than 0 second transition screen while data is loaded in the background when jumping through the portals in R&C. This is very impressive tech. But, this is not "Instaneous". This is a great improvement over current-gen. But not the dream of the Road to PS5 video. Which was the only point I was trying to make.

Am I watching something different? I've watched the gameplay demo 2 minute one like 5 times and that never happened.
Are you comparing Portal's world to R+c worlds loading time.?
Please say your not.
No for the short little warps. It's I'm over here but now I'm 50ft away. Same thing

Huh?

How do you not see it unloading one world and loading another completely different world as I described, in two seconds or less?

Not talking about that in level warp gif. Talking about this.

I just want to address the last part of his video where he discusses a comparison of the two consoles' storage-memory data transfer speeds.

In an interview with a Dirt 5 developer, he said this about the Series X's SSD drive: "The drive is so fast that I can load data mid-frame, use it, consume it, unload and replace it with something else in the middle of a frame, treating GPU memory like a virtual disk".

The quote above invalidates many of the claims Innocenceii makes in his last part of the video.

We will know more about the tech inside the Xbox at the Hot Chip discussion happening soon. We will be able to have a comparison that doesn't have to be based on assumptions.

Source of the interview for those who are interested:

So you're using an inside Xbox developer quote to prove Series X SSD is powerful? Yet people accuse Tim Sweeney of 'bias'.

Can't have it both ways.

Next time before making a judgment on something at least time the bloody thing.

not only were you a bit out on your timings, but you were also miles out.

Not 100% not 200% not even 300% more.

This is how fud starts, i am tired of it.

This could of all been prevented if you just spent a few seconds watching the video.

I understand your points, but it sure as hell looks bad the way you referenced it.

That 7-second quote, where did that idea come from, why not 6 or 4 or 2, i mean its less that 2. Its so far off, that's all i am saying.

Peace.

Huh?

How do you not see it unloading one world and loading another completely different world as I described, in two seconds or less?

Not talking about that in level warp gif. Talking about this.

Honestly it's just a fancy door. It's literally exactly the speed I expect when pretty much any SSD is the only HDD being developed for. It seems like a QuickTime without a prompt. I still don't see the ahhhh oooh amazing. Seriously pick any game with an inside and an outside and go back and forth between them.
So you're using an inside Xbox developer quote to prove Series X SSD is powerful? Yet people accuse Tim Sweeney of 'bias'.

Can't have it both ways.
Very different. It's a quote of someone who works on a multiplatform title vs someone who openly dislikes Microsoft and is now partly owned by Sony

It's an MS approved source/soundbite, that's why it's important. It's not completely independent. Granted though, perhaps Sweeney was a bad example.

There was barely any interaction in any of the new worlds till the last one. It was nothing more then I expect to replace elevators since spinners are not going to have to be considered. Now if each world was fully interactive the second you land I would be impressed.

I was being facetious. Purposefully wrong. Clearly wrong. I've seen quotes of varying amounts of seconds a few times and I was trying to make fun of it. I did not state it as a fact. If you've seen the video you know it's not 7 seconds. That's the point. It was not meant to be taken seriously, if you took it seriously that's on you. You could probably find a few quotes of it for a range of seconds you search "1 to 10 seconds ratchet and clank game" on this site.

here you go found one. There's a few others as well.

7 seconds was tunnel itself with 2 seconds of animations of character being pulled in/pushed out. Either way, this is loading, it didn’t look good when we were promised no loading screens this gen. After Cerny’s announcement some people acted like SSD is some kind of secret weapon but obviously it’s not just a matter of having super fast storage and bam, it’s done. Clearly game needs to be written in a way to utilize it which was nicely demoed in Ratchet and Clank. There will still be loading screens from some less capable developers and some people should just stop being apologetic or defensive. SSD is not a magic formula

EDIT: From “LOLOL, PS5 is king, loading screens are dead” through “Actually, this is artistic decision” to “Well, I like loading screens”. Geez, people, make up your minds or stop excusing companies, it’s not like you earn money from it

Shouldn't you be addressing those people, not me? I have never claimed that Tim Sweeney is biased.

The statement made by the Dirt 5 is not a subjective statement. It is an objective one. If that statement is not correct (because of the bias of the developer) and you bought an XSX, you can sue Microsoft for false advertisement. Simply put, I doubt any company selling a product in the millions will false advertise said product (because if they did, they will be paying back all the revenue resultant of said product + reparations which means losses in the billions).

As I said, Tim Sweeney may not have been a great example. But you quoting an MS approved 'developer' interview quote, as an unbiased quote, is equally laughable. If same developer had said 'only slightly slower than PS5', do you think that would have got through? No-one in this is covering themselves in glory, but don't quote MS vetted and published sources as 'fact' either.
