The 1up Show: Season 2

edit: okay, the guys PC rant was funny :lol , but honestly, him talking about "1up" and history and shit he should at least acknowledge that an FPS would be better on the PC.

The new 1up intro is pretty catchy!

Black seems to be shaping up. I noticed they finally have some music in the game now, so that's pretty cool. Why do the backgrounds get all blurry when you reload now though? It looks very odd to me.

The Criterion dude was freakin hilarious.

Yeah seriously. Yesterday I saw Gametrailer.com's Alex Ward inteview in Vegas and I was kind of thinking that GT kind of stole 1UP's thunder. But 1UP's Black interview/coverage was so much more informative and had so much more character-- awesome stuff.

..and come to think of it; "The Right-Click Show" wouldn't be a bad idea for a PC gaming segment :)

Almost as much as Gabe Newell hates his consoles!

I'd throw in a witty piggyback comment that Gabe Newell also hates bathing, but I'm not quite sure--the man reeks of windex, and I'm not sure if that qualifies.

SIN looks great. I also love the ideas they have for the game in regards to how they gather data that will help them in development of later episodes.

The footage of BLACK in this episode is the best footage of the game yet. It would be nicer though if the enemies would bleed a bit more. If I blast an enemy with a shotgun to the head, I want to see half his head explode. The BLACK dude talked about the realism of shooting a gun and how they're trying to get there, and yet they don't show the damage a body can take from those type of weapons.

ROFL@the criterion guy smashing on pc gaming :lol :lol :lol :lol

wow black is looking fucking AWESOME, and xbox version WTF?! first ive ever heard of it

IIRC it was always known that it was coming out for PS2 and Xbox, for some reason the game is treated as a PS2 exclusive by GAF though

I think it actually might be PS2 footage, it looks stunning for this gen

The Gametrailers.com footage was from the PS2 version and looked just as good as the stuff shown in the 1up vid.

Edit: Guess both vids showed the PS2 version. I'm wondering how the Xbox rev stacks up, especially in respect to particle effects.

Sin looks sorta bad. FPS games are driven forward and retain fun factor through two things:

-immersion; via animation, physics, graphic polish, environmental complexity, sound effects, etc.

-combat; via ai scripting, weapon fun-factor/options, use of squads and/or ancillary commands, etc.

SiN isn't showing me advances in any of that; the main draw seems to be the difficulty structure, which is cool but not really a reason to buy a game.

Black looks great, thanks to the immersion aspects...except that it's distracting looking at how imprecise the aiming is using the controller. Dunno, criterion guy, pissing on PC gamers when you're releasing a big console FPS might not affect your sales, but it's not very cool an attitude when you're responding to the gamer-centric audience of the 1up show. *shrug*, I just want the option for kb+mouse in console FPS.

wow if that was ps2 footage...wow...just wow. i didnt notice any framerate drops even when heaps of shit was going on. this is what killzone shouldve been imo, i honestly cant see them fucking the gameplay up.

my guess is because when your reloading a gun your focusing on the gun and not the background/surrounding. i think theyre trying to replicate that vision

Btw, who the hell wants to play an FPS on the dual shock? Yuck.

While the PS2 version may be the superior version considering how Burnout 3 and Revenge are great on PS2, the dual shock controller is enough for me to get the Xbox version of BLACK

Dual Shock + FPS = ew

Has good as Black looks, it better have a good story or something.

You're some dude with a gun. You blow shit up. The end

From the name, it's not hard to figure out where the story is going. If you've watched shows like 24 or Alias you know the score: it's black ops. Espionage, conspiracy, plots within plots; you can expect to see it all. Criterion's Alex Ward wrote the story himself, drawing on his favorite TV shows and movies. And in their style, mysterious and only partially-revealing cut-scenes advance the story. It works to the extent that everything gives you a plausible reason to start each level, and honestly, that's all that matters here.

You know what would be even better?

Playing Black with through backwards compatibility with the 360 pad!

This is what I'm waiting for. Game will probably be 20 bucks by the time it works properly on 360 but I'll wait it out.

Game looks awesome. But I refuse to play it with the dual shock or Xbox pad. Can't go back after the greatness of the 360 pad.

I would wait too, but I'm weak :(

I skipped Burnout Revenge for the 360 version, and seeing how that's just a very minor upgrade, I can't justify waiting on this. Black is probably my most wanted game of 2006, and even though the DualShock2 sucks ass for FPS, I've got no choice.

I wouldn't even expect BC for Black since there's a rumor that they're working on a Xbox 360 port of this. Spotty BC ftl :/

The wait will be tough. Considering I only have an X360, here's hoping the BC ninjas get hard to work.

THE 8 BIT-BEAT-MAN Rocks!!!!!!

They did a nice job on the theme music too, I'm not sure if it captures the Vibe of 1up really but it is cool sounding track. :)

Good show. Not sure what was impressive of Sin Episodes :\ but whatever.

Black!! Holy shit!!

Che!! good move on file naming as well. I couldn't keep them in order. good move to go with 201 (season 2, episode 1).

the guy that does the interviews is kinda annoying, but other than that a nice show. The NES dude was cool and the Black footage was badass.

Can you 1UP guys make a RSS feed/podcast thing for the 640x360 QuickTime version as well? I'd like to have it in iTunes and get it automatically but at the highest res.

Great episode guys, Alex ward made me laugh, and it seems he watches the show to boot. YOu should get him to make a bimonthly segment about things he hates.

Loved the theme song, good work. :)
Can't get over how bloody impressive Black is. I overdosed on FPSs a few years back and haven't touched one since. This seems like it'll bring me back, it just looks so damn fun.

Oh and the Alex Ward bit was fantastic.

Are teh podcasts resuming this week as well.

Not this week, but we'll have something for you next...stay tuned.

Not bad making it in 85 posts before catching a "kinda annoying" from Ninja Scooter. On GAF I can so live with that! :D

The only difference in Black PS2 to Xbox is that if you notice it the Xbox controller feels a little snappier. I attribute that to the higher polling speed on its port, but that's pure speculation.

SiN was a lot of fun. The dynamic balance system worked really well even when I tried to mess it up by like standing around wasting time or whatever. And the SiN magnum is without doubt a kick ass pistol, but you know, whatever you like.

man I gotta say I really like the 1up show. Really spot on, really creative and man those guys at 1up are talented.

How do I apply for a job! :D

Awesome Show. The new intro and ending are sweet. Ryan looks so different now. He kinda looks like Nick Frost (the guy in all of Demi's avatars). SiN looks alright, Black looks amazing. Too bad CES stinked this year.

Can't wait for next weeks episode.

Ditto... Against my extreme displeasure, it is -1 sales for Black for me right now unless they get it BC on X360. I'll be praying for the Burnout Revenge style port in six months...

I really enjoyed that PC bashing rant. :lol

He pretty much summed up my opinion of PC gaming right there. :D

Overall it was a nice episode for 1up. The production value definitely took it up a notch but i've got to admit. I'm not completely sure I like the new style over the original opening song. Something about those strings in the original were quite beautiful and i'm still wondering to this day if Ryan actually created them himself. If so, mad props from this white boy.

For the record, I will be buying the PS2 version of Black. The special effects and lighting have always been better on the PS2 version of Burnout. I'm sure we'll see the same pattern with this game seeing as it's running on a similar engine.

I thought Sin looked very good, it is focused on the right difficulty setting and interactivity. I love how they were talking about using statistics to improve gameplay in the next one. ie when someonee tries to interact with something and it doesnt work, they try and add functionality to it.

That was a great show. That Black footage was awesome and I really like the way you guys get information and footage out there without taking it or yourselves too seriously. Really makes for an entertaining show.

Anyways, if you went 85 posts without a gripe about the show on GAF, trust me you are doing something right, lol.

Good to hear about the podcasts. I quite enjoy those as well.

Does anyone have a solution to playing FPS on PS2? Dual shock is useless :(

Not true. It's all just a matter of getting used to any pad. Yeah, the dual analogs are a little more loose than the Xbox pad but it's nothing that make a game unplayable. It's just a slightly different feel.

Also, I think a fall 360 port is all but guranteed as long as the game sells pretty well. That should be something to see.
