The 2017 RPG Discussion Thread

#1
Continuing what Durante started, I have decided to take up the mantle and continue with this yearly thread that we have had since 2014. Here's a link to the thread of 2016. What this thread will try to accomplish is to list role playing games relased in 2017 (in the West) and then we can discuss. I will list the games by release date. I will list full games and expansions. If you guys have any suggested games, please, share. Sharing is caring! I will continuously update the thread. While it might look bare bones now, I fully intend to list as many rpgs, PC, console, handheld, wrpg, jrpg, action, tun-based or what have you, as possible.

No Labadal hype points? :p

You're missing some obvious ones such as Divinity: Original Sin 2, Torment: Tides of Numenera, and Battle Brothers, but I assume you already know that.

Very, very curious about ELEX primarily because of Risen.

Surely the developer has to see the light at some point, right?

I mean, we all know it is going to be Euro-jank of the wazoo but I am fine with that. The problem is the don't seem to understand what made Risen so great.

#19
Cosmic Star Heroine (by Zeboyd Games) should be out in 2017, I think.

Edit: Oh and if ARPGs count, Grim Dawn is getting an expansion this year. Don't think it has a name yet.

#26
Cyberpunk 2077
PC, PS4, XB1

AT ONE POINT THIS YEAR, I CAN FEEL IT IN MY VEINS.
I have faith... I... I just know... this is our year... I... Damn it...

*cries*...

My...my wallet is crying ;_;

Horizon
P5
Nier
KH 1.5+2.5+2.8
Nioh
Berseria
DQ11
NNK2

Off the top of my head, this is horrible!

The OP is missing the two most important RPGs of 2017: Divinity Original sin 2 and Torment.

(D:OS2 is more than likely to get delayed to 2018, but as of now the official time window is 2017)

#36
Trails of cold steel 3 is also coming out in japan this year i think. So... you know, just 5 more years for the west.
No way, the series is caught up in the west now. I think Cold Steel 3 will be mid 2018 in the west, which still sucks cuz avoiding spoilers that long ugh, but it won't be more than a year wait.

I was totally waiting for the Durante thread. I'm not sure if you wanted us to contribute thoughts on the releases but I'll add one for you any way.

Expeditions: Viking
PC (Q1 2017)

Tactical/Strategy RPGs with turn based combat and a dash of resource management. I played Expeditions: Conquistador with low expectations having been disappointed by another SRPG I had played (Blackguard) but it turned out to be a far more engaging experience and I had a great time. The combat in Conquistador fell into the tough start but easy late game trap but the game was enjoyable and pretty short so this was not an issue for me. The writing and setting in Conquistador both surprised me pleasantly so I have been looking forward to more from the developers. I find SRPGs to be less common subgenre so it gets a bonus on hype points from me 8.5/10 Mephala hype points.

Dungeons of Aledorn
PC/Mac/Linux, TBD 2017

A kickstarter RPG that's looking to bring back the old Gold Box style RPG (or Northlands Trilogy or Betrayal at Krondor if you prefer). Graphically it's not much to look at but the gameplay and systems are shaping up nicely.

Underworld Ascendant
PC, TBD 2017

The spiritual successor to Ultima Underworld being made by a team of ex Looking Glass folks? Hell to the yes.

Starcrawlers
PC, Spring 2017

First person dungeon crawler/blobber in a sci fi setting with procedurally generated dungeons. This one has been a long time coming but the early access version is really solid so the final product should be stellar.

Copper Dreams
PC/Mac/Linux, Q1 2017

Cyberpunk RPG from the makers of Serpent in the Staglands with an emphasis and allowing multiple player driver approaches to solving problems. Looks great.

Writing from work: I haven't forgotten any games, especially not Divinity OS2 or Torment: Tides of Numenera. Thet are my most anticipated PC games of the year! but keep suggestions coming. Contributions like the one Mephala shared is also encouraged. I will update the thread in the evening.
I will be adding the Yakuza games.

Feel free to steal this.

February:
Summon Night 6: Lost Borders
PS4, PSVita

Courtesy of the folk from Working Designs, Media Vision's 3D strategy RPG Summon Night is coming to America. Released for Summon Night's 15th anniversary, Lost Borders features main characters from across the entire franchise.

This is going to be a extremely good RPG year with both Divinity 2 and Torment. Just hope Divinity is coming to the PS4. Me and my gf's best gaming moments is from co-oping 1 on PS4.

Man, this year seems super promising. The highlights for me are Cosmic Star Heroine, Persona 5 and Digimon World.

Automata has me excited too but it seems to be 90% action, although I've avoided a lot of info so maybe I'm wrong.

I don't understand why Nier and Yakuza are RPGs and Horizon isn't. Actually I just recently found that people consider Horizon not an RPG even when devs constantly says that the game is an action RPG, but whatever.
