Painkiller and Bulletstorm studio People Can Fly founders Adrian Chmielarz, Andrzej Poznanski, and Michal Kosieradzki left the company over the summer, and now their next effort has been revealed. The trio have founded The Astronauts, a new Warsaw, Poland-based independent studio.

The company's first project will release in 2013 for unspecified platforms, and according to Chmielarz, the studio is "on a quest to map uncharted waters." The unannounced game will on Epic Games' Unreal Engine 3 and is part of a multi-title licensing agreement.

The company's newly launched website does not list any open positions nor any further details on the studio's first game.

If they're using Unreal Engine 3 (4 is available these days) and releasing something next year already, I'm going to guess it's for mobile, or an extremely hardware forgiving lower budget PC title.

I really like their logo.

Maybe also a downloadable launch or near launch title on next years consoles?

This is the guy that after making the great Painkiller PC game, he started focusing on the console business to the point he tweeted: https://twitter.com/adrianchm/status/126979664488050688

I can't return to keyboard + mouse. It's like eating with a screwdriver.

How do you go from making fast paced FPS PC games to making absurd statements like these?? He'd rather play Painkiller with a gamepad? Oooookay.

So while I should be really excited he parted ways with Epic.. I am not that much.

I am enjoying controllers more now that I use the "claw grip" on them. If they want to build a game around controllers it's not that big of a deal.

Definitely sounds like an indie title.

Edit:

CARY, N.C. and WARSAW (October 11, 2012) – Epic Games, Inc. and The Astronauts, the new independent games studio founded by Adrian Chmielarz, Andrzej Poznanski and Michal Kosieradzki, announce a long-term Unreal Engine licensing agreement. Under the deal terms, The Astronauts have the rights to develop multiple games using the latest Unreal Engine technology. The team is creating its debut title, an unannounced game due for release in 2013, with Epic’s award-winning Unreal Engine 3 (UE3).

“We’ve worked with UE3 for the last six years, and we know its power,” said Adrian Chmielarz, co-founder of The Astronauts. “Choosing Unreal Engine technology for our future was the textbook definition of a no-brainer. We are on a quest to map uncharted waters, and Epic’s tech provides the stability required for success.”

“We’re truly impressed with what high-quality games small, independent teams are creating using the Unreal Engine,” said Mike Gamble, European territory manager of Epic. “The best is yet to come, and there’s a good chance that The Astronauts will be one of those teams that makes us say ‘Wow.’”

If I ever post something in Japanese which I don't understand, please BAN me.
The founders of The Astronauts have more than 50 years of collective experience in game development. That’s why when we said we would reveal our game this year, we knew what we were talking about.

Except not really, because the reveal will happen early next year.

To be honest, we will be ready with the teaser material in just a few days, but we have realized it would make no sense to talk about the game during the holidays. It’s time for the family and getting fat and/or drunk. Gaming news can wait.

So there we go. January 2013 it is. We’re hoping that the end of the world does not happen, because it would suck to be wrong about the reveal twice.
