The Elder Scrolls Online to have monthly subs, is not F2P

Ok, some good answers in here.
I don't agree though. I wouldn't mind spending more, if the game is very good. The F2P MMOs always have a catch, some element of P2Win or something just... weird. Like Neverwinters "log in once a day and click a button to get stuffz". And all these currencies? Gold, Medals, Jewels, Astral Jewels, Astral Dominos, Divine Balls... just a mess. But I get it, the developers gotta be payed in some way, and MMOs are more expensive than other games to both develop and maintain; so they have to come up with something to get paid. I prefer the straight up "pay a set amount and play the full game without thinking of money at all", to all these funky F2P models.

I was really interested in the game after my latest play session of Skyrim, then I saw the videos from Quakecon and got totally turned off. If they want to charge a subscriptoin fee for this game they will have to raise the quality by ALOT.

I have mixed feelings.

I want to enjoy a full experience, so the monthly model would make the most sense. They won't have to nickel and dime me content.

Then, it's highly unlikely I'll ever play another mmo in long sessions ever again, and really can't justify the monthly plan. I like the drop in drop out nature of F2P.

Most people I know have moved on to the latter case above, and I don't see this being successful with a subscription.

I feel that this and Wildstar aren't doing anything different enough to warrant subs.

Like most others here I think they'll both be f2p as soon as the initial income bubble bursts.

Hypothetically, if this were EVE with Swords (a real player-run fantasy sandbox, like the single player TES games are), would you be willing to pay a monthly sub?

We know the game is more or less a themepark MMO at the moment.

I'd be willing to give it a fair chance/2-3 months of sub and take it from there.

And they think it will work.

Not sure if it's smart to get the people who will buy at first then go F2P or just go F2P right away

If the end goal is F2P then its the latter. And if F2P isn't the end goal then they're in for a rude awakening.

I really don't think there is any place in the market for a monthly sub MMO. FF14 will bomb again because of this and this MMO doesn't look anywhere near as interesting as that.

Gotta say, most people in here are really cheap. I'm not excited at all for the game, but you play it a lot 15$ a month isn't much imo. That's like... one cheap meal.
It's not about being cheap - I have no problem paying money for a mmo.
the problem for me is a psychological one - I feel forced to make the most of my sub resulting in negative feelings when I play other games as I am wasting my sub... I know it's silly but it's the way it is...

Death of Autotune

I don't think it's completely dead. From what has been shown so far (which is very little), it doesn't look like it's going after WoW. Based on that, I think it is different enough to survive. Hell, look at The Old Republic when it tried to go after the WoW marketshare (with very "safe" gameplay at that).

It is not the 15€/month that is the problem, it is that the month ticks away even if you do not play.

Make it 15€/30 days, that do not tick away if you do not play, every started day can tick though, I'd be okay with that.

Can someone please explain to me why it's ok for FF14 ARR to have a sub fee, but for ESO its suddenly a dealbreaker?

Probably (and this is just a theory) because hardcore FF fans seem more "fanatical" or "passionate" (depends on ow you see it) than TESO fans. I mean they basically funded FFXIV v1 and that was on a monthly sub for 3 years!

Don't forget Ultima Online. Can't believe they're still charging subs for a 16 year old game.

Why not if it is profitable?
It doesn't have that many players anymore (does it?) and the servers probably are pretty cheap as well (considering how old it is), so charging the few players a monthly sub is probably the most profitable system. And since it still has players, it means they're still okay with the price and want to play...

You would think these dumb ass companies would pay attention to anyone not named "Blizzard". Turbine in particular.

If Star Wars can't even sell a monthly sub...

I'm sure the reason is that this game has been in development for so long, they didn't exactly build it with F2P in mind. If there is half a brain at Zenimax, they've been working on F2P design for the game for months now.

Star Wars has a significant amount of subscribers in its F2P state actually, it makes money these days.

I very much agree

I too would like to hear the answer, considering the general sentiment toward Square Enix around here.
ESO doesn't look that good from some gameplay that I've seen. Visuals look dated too. The sub cost is $14.99 vs $12.99. That'll add up overtime. A lot of people will expect this to be a buggy mess with Bethesda's reputation.
FFXIV is a lot of fun. Easy to pick up and play.

FF XIV was free for a while since it was so bad after it launched. It wasn't sub for 3 years straight lol. People aren't that crazy to pay for something that isn't complete. The announcement of A Realm Reborn brought back subscriptions.

A major problem with most MMOs in development, it seems.
Back in 2007, when SWTOR and TESO (and others?) development has started, subs were the standard... and no one predicted (probably, or at least didn't convince the leadership) that F2P would be the standard five years later.
Unfortunately switching to F2P model is not that simple without gimping aspects of the game in the process (like in SWTOR where you don't gain enough XP as free player to avoid getting stuck to a planet, unless you do PVP, space missions and flashpoints as much as you can in addition to normal questing).

I'm an Elder Scrolls fan, but I refuse to buy a subscription based game. € 13 x 12 = € 156 a year! That's four new AAA-titles I could have bought instead. No thanks.

As others have said, you pay even when you're not playing the game. Waste of money. I would only consider this game if it had:

- a cheap 'starter'-pack. Say ~€ 30.
- no subscription.
- 2 expansions per year priced around € 10.

This I could live with. € 13 a month? No way.
