The Elder Scrolls Online to have monthly subs, is not F2P

GG...

The oblivious nature of these companies is amazing. I'd love to sit in on the corporate board meetings that greenlight these big budget, p2p MMOs in 2011-2013. It literally makes no sense. Unless the plan is to purposely start off with subs for a year, and then go f2p. But even that is iffy considering the most successful, full time f2p models are more profitable than non-WoW f2p.

Most MMO developers have admitted that Free to Play models with subscription options have proven to be the most profitable business model. I feel like we already knew TESO was going to have this sort of model. I don't really see the point in a sub only model.

$15 x 12 months = 180

Either they do a 180 in a year, or you pay $180 in a year............

EDIT: damn it bj00rn_, your actual calculations ruined my post.

And there goes any chance of me buying it. Why pay monthly for this when there's Guild Wars 2? The sub model needs to die.

I will stick with guild wars 2 then. If Star Wars cant make it with a subscription, ES cant either...

Id love to read their reasons why its so "different" from games like guild wars...

The Bethesda forum lurkers are praising this. What an awful plan. I would've been all for it if it was B2P, but a subscription kills any desire I had.

F2P MMOs suck, I dunno why anyone would think they are better than a sub. So many cheap gamers. lol

It has nothing to do with being cheap and everything to do with whether you value your time or your money more. I don't have a lot of time to play MMOs these day but I do enjoy playing them when I get the chance. Paying a monthly sub when I can barely play the game doesn't make sense to me. However playing for free when I can and paying for things like EXP boosts to make up for the time I'm not playing if I choose does.

Lost all interest in TESO now, why bother when I can just play Skyrim for free for the environment and gameplay. Also, once EQ Next Landmark and then EQ Next come out, there's zero reason to sub to an MMO ever again.

I prefer a sub system over F2P anyway, but unfortunately the trailers so far hasn't piqued my interest at all. I'll try the beta when it's available and decide from there. Most recent sub based MMOs that I've tried recently (post WoW) haven't lasted at all though, which makes me more cautious before being considering a purchase.

I'd hold off on the "lol, game is dead!" talk until at least this year ends. WoW's subs are hanging around 8 million still, and By January we'll know how well FFXIV is doing. People will pay if the game is good.

Really?
Why not buy the disc for 60 bucks then pay for additional stuff here and there.

Or if there is a subscription 5$?
15$ a month. That's absurd.

Game failed the second it was revealed to be theme park and not sandbox. The newest footage didn't do any favors (the dungeon looked straight shit along with the animations, etc.) and this is just icing on the cake with the paywall.

Hope the 7 year dev time was worth it ZeniMax.

The Skyrim/Oblivion audience they are catering to won't pay monthly for this. Thee hardcore mmo fan who would pay monthly probably won't bother cause of it's combat. Not sure who they think is gonna pay.

My post has nothing to do with personal play time. Im talking about quality between sub and F2P MMOs.

If you dont have time to play, thats your problem.

Gotta say, most people in here are really cheap. I'm not excited at all for the game, but you play it a lot 15$ a month isn't much imo. That's like... one cheap meal.

Sub games are usually designed to make you need to play them a lot. Timesinks really piss me off, slow exp, slow travel options (waiting real time for boats, airships, etc.). They need you paying that subscription for as long as possible. Your convenience is hardly ever their concern outside of testing the point gamers would get fed up with the carrot on the stick being unreachable.

That said I expected this game to be sub. Bethesda is getting a taste of being very popular, they would love WOW success.

Pretty sure this list is outdated because some of those games are now F2P iirc.

pretty much all of those are either f2p or dead (or both). Eve and FFXI being the exception.

I still don't understand this game, regardless of the pricing.

I really liked Skyrim and Morrowind is one of my favorite games. But they were always chill, slightly boring experiences. It feels good to go explore something or clear out some quests or level up some skill.

I can't remember in either game ever having my heartrate raised enough to make me want to play MMO style.

oh hey Elder Scrolls is FTP coo.... hey Everquest:Next is coming out I might as well play a game that was designed to be FTP then some shoehorned FTP nonsense.

am I wrong?

You're exactly right. Everquest Next looks to be doing f2p right. It still remains to be seen as most western MMOS have not done very well since WoW, with only a scant few remaining semi-relevant (LOTRO) and of course EVE has its niche so it does nicely.

But ESO is like most of what people said on the first page, DOA. The big theme park sub-based MMO days are gone. WoW's numbers, while still impressively high, are dwindling at a big chunk every 3 months. In a few years it'll be down to 1-3 million, which is still very nice compared to other sub based MMOs, but the days of a sub-based MMOs are coming to an end. No one has proven it's worth it anymore.

Seems like a game that's been in development since 2006.

It was kinda obvious how it was going to go, with how tight lipped they were being.

It's going free to play regardless, its just a matter of time. I'm fairly sure they know this already, and have been working towards having a f2p payment structure ready to drop in when the time inevitably comes. I might try the game when that happens.

Why u guys complain?

7 million still pay wow...

I had paid 3 years and i will pay again for a good game.

problably next mmo from blizzard will be subsc and will sell a lot...

Good luck with that! The only mom I have played that was worth a sub was WOW. And even that got stale. If I sub I expect substantial content every month.
