The Evo 2014 Ultra Street Fighter IV Champion won with a PSX controller

Honestly I never understood why sticks were considered "superior". I am awful with sticks yet godlike with a pad. Ive beaten heaps of players who use sticks.

Its not like there is some advantage if u used sticks, like how mouse would demolish a pad player in a fps

Disgusting.

I'd argue that the button layout on a stick vs a stock 360 or PS3 pad is an advantage for certain characters, and there's definitely a bit of a learning curve for charge characters on a pad whereas a stick it's extremely easy with a square gate. But in the end, it's whatever you are comfortable with. Nobody worth listenibg to would look down on a pad player.

Buttons on a controller make things like walking blanka electricity pretty difficult unless you use some specific custom layout.

Even regarding the stick, I've found charge characters much easier to control with the stick rather than the pad. Things like rolling your thumb on pad to hold Rog's charge after a headbutt to do ultra just feel very awkward. The rest of the cast actually feels better on pad since those motions are more accurate.

Congrats to you, Luffy! I've enjoyed your gameplay.

To come from being in the Loser's bracket, to being the winner of the USF IV tournament is quite a feat.

I'd love to see the reactions of the sponsors that usually try to sell sticks... I wonder if this will encourage them to focus on (better) pads more often...

Would you agree with the premise that there could be an advantage in certain mechanics using a control mechanism other than a pad? Have you seen a stickless stick before? The ergonomics work in such a way that it overcomes some physical limitations of a traditional dpad/joystick

Around the time CvS2 hit, I started using random select almost exclusively and realized that charge characters are painful for me on d-pads. My hands cramp up in a hurry. So, I'm all about arcade sticks now.

PSA for anyone considering an xtokki (or any PS controller adapter): Strongly recommend using a PS1 Dual Shock. The pressure-sensitive buttons on the Dual Shock 2 are a liability almost as bad as input lag.

I don't understand how his hand isn't a giant blister.
Blisters mean nothing to Luffy!

I was surprised to see the PS1 pad. As a recent tournament viewer it looks like most top players use a fighting stick and there's a culture of buying expensive sticks.

It seems so strange to me that we're still having this discussion.

I mean, wasn't Wolfkrone's rampage years ago legitimizing pads enough (if you really feel that your controller of choice needs legitimizing)?

I adore my hitbox. Now that I got execution problems mostly out of the way, I just have to focus on not being complete ass in any fighting game. I really wish I didn't make the switch though because I can't handle arcade machines at all.
I'm in the same boat. The advantage is clear and immediate, but it really messes with your ability to play with other control methods.

I'm more impressed by the fact that he won with Rose, which has been my main since 2009!

...

Wait this means a ton of scrubs are now gonna use Rose now right? Great...

Speaking of myself, the only reason these sticks are expensive is because of the quality of the build/parts that are used on it. I prefer a quality stick that provides the arcade authenticity and knowing the parts used aren't jank and willing to pay the extra if the stick is worth the expense.

Having been a long time pad-player, now stick user. I would agree. I think charge characters play better on square gate sticks, but 360/720 grapplers play better on a d-pad. At least for me. I'd take stick buttons universally over pad buttons,

I'm more curious about the guy who uses a Madcatz FightPad. How does he get one of those to last for an entire tournament?

Nice controller, but the build quality was right shit. I guess they got that sorted out?

lol, yeah.

Two friends and I each bought one of those when SF4 was new. None of them lasted very long.

I could never play with a joystick. It just feels mushy and less accurate for me. I've tried several times but i've just stuck with my usb saturn pad and i do just fine with that. congrats on dragging controllers out of the fighting game ghetto.

Yeah DS2 is the most common but I know guys who use a PS1 pad. One of my friends does. He got it for like 5 dollars at a pawn shop lol. He likes how lightweight it is.

Yeah I've seen some local Tekken heads that use the OG PS1 pad also claim to enjoy the light weight. They also like that the analog sticks are not there because they feel like they can get in the way and cause accidental movement inputs.

Hell, I recall seeing Mad Ocx (Old school NY Tekken player) use a rubber band to keep the sticks away from the rest of the buttons back in the Tekken 5 days.

a few months ago where he won the french tournament, he played also KOF XIII and I saw that in the button mappings he used the triggers for the attack buttons, instead of the x,y,a,b buttons.

does he map the 4 trigger buttons for SF4 too instead of using right thumb?
if so, a Saturn controller would be out of the question

It's common to see people just remove the analogs from the stick.

I'm constantly torn between the easier movement in dpad and the fun I have hitting buttons on a stick.

The second round was forty straight seconds of fireballs. It does get a bit better towards the end though.

As a rose player, that was her strategy. Zone with fireballs/reflection/absorption

Use the super bar to to victory

???

Profit

To force Rose to do something else would mean Louffy's downfall.

In fact, it was the other guy's fault for continuously try the fireballs tactic from full screen. He was better when he was aggressive.

Luffy's play was definitely impressive but this isn't too shocking to me, I think there's certain characters and playstyles that are equally easy to play with both pad and stick. What really surprised me was when I found out Wolfkrone can play Viper so well with pad
