Nintendo Revolution GAF Contest

Amir0x @ GAF is holding a "Nintendo Revolution Concept Art Contest" so I thought I'd throw my hand in. I've already been thinking about this in my first conceptual speculation of Revolution's controller. I was, and still sorta am, under this notion that Nintendo's next system will have multiple controllers/control interfaces. I had the idea of two "main" controllers...a conventional controller for ports, BC & traditional games and another for Nintendo's "revolutionary" controls. I couldn't really "sell" the idea at GAF so I made this page...now I've thought up a different concept now. Basically instead of two "main" controllers I decided to meld the idea's together as best as I could in this doodle. Formerly called The "GameWand" now I call this controller interface concept The "GameGrip"...

My "GameGrip" Conceptual Features:
--Both GameGrip's Feature:
-Analog Sticks with digital clicks
-Analog Triggers with digital clicks
-Toggle Wheels with digital clicks
-Full Gyro Motion Control
-On/Off Switches
-WaveBird Wireless
-Rumble
-Zapper Light Sensor Lightguns
-Rechargable Lithium Ion Batteries
-Base Button (at the butt of the grips)
--Left GameGrip Features:
-Touch Screen
-On-Screen Button
-Built-In Mic
-Headset Plug
--Right GameGrip Features:
-4 Color-Coded Face Button
-Sensory "Feel" Button
-Start & Select Buttons
-Retractable Stylus Tip (to use with touch screen on left grip)

This control scheme allows for conventional gaming (there's plenty of buttons/functions to map out button layouts from ports from other systems) as well as the new types of gaming (built-in mic, headset jack, touch screen, lightgun,, gyro motion control, etc.) and my big idea (what I think the "revolutionary" feature is): the sensory "Feel" button! With this set-up you could be playing a "normal" game and then all the sudden switch to motion control (wether it be tilting, aiming, swinging, steering, piloting, etc.) and/or switch to using the touch screen ALL on the fly 'cos you don't have to switch controllers as all these methods of control methods of control are in your hands. There could even be lot's of games that could use just one "GameGrip" too. Another feature I've added is a base button at the butt of each grip...you could hold this base button down on a table and with the gyro motion control use it as an old fasioned joystick...or in a shooting game where you're using the light sensors you can smack the base button as if you were reloading a handgun...or push the base button down firmly next to you and use the gyration control as if you were really shifting gears in a racing game. Another feature I thought of is a center peice that not only can be used for corded play and recharge the batteries, but also it holds the two GameGrip's together (at adjustable angles too) for that "regular" controller feel as I know some people wouldn't like the idea of holding two seperate units for some games. I think I made the controller very ergonomic for switching between playing method's and for using the full range of gyro motion control as well (imagine holding these as if you were putting up your dukes in a boxing game and, since they're wireless, actually shadow-boxing against opponant's in the game).

But my crowning feature is the sensory "Feel" button. It came to me after thinking about a recent rumor wich said something about: "touching is good, but FEELING is better"! To me, when you use the Nintendo DS's touch screen you're touching the game, but to FEEL something I believe that means the game is touching you back! I'm not suggesting that the controller will change shape and grab you, but giving the player a new sensation thru a button would still be really cool. How? They have electronic brail machines that can help blind people read regular script. But instead of this sensory "Feel" button being used to give players brail, it could give symbols, textures...game makers could even animate the button to give you sensations of water or sand or something moving. You could use this in a game for solving puzzles, searching for clues, telling where you're at or where to go, hell anything you imagine. I gave alot of examples at GAF when I had the notion and I'll post them here too, but for now I think you get the idea. To note, as far as I know those electronic brail machines use tiny rubber fibers that change length to give the feeling of brail so...I made it to where you could remove the "skin" of this sensory button and clean it just in case. I think there's LOT'S of evidence to support this idea of a feeling button and even a more recent rumor supports this idea as well.

The console deck itself I haven't really done as much with. My hopes/guesses/thoughts are that it'll feature the following:
-HD-DVD Drive (plays Revolution games, GAMECUBE games, DVD's, CD's & possibly HD-DVD's).
-4 controller ports (for hardware peripherals, BC with GCN controllers/peripherals & also wireless controller communication is built-in)
-2 DigiCard slots (GCN BC, memory cards & SD/DigiCard adaptor)
-built-in HD for self-server networking
-ethernet & WiFi network communication
-analog and digital A/V output with HDTV & latest Dolby support
-processor specifications comparable to the competition
-peripheral's include: "GameEye" & the Retro Drive (for playing/backing up old Nintendo carts)
-the ability to download mini-quests, mini-games, chapters and even full games in portable form to the next GameBoy thru WiFi off of Revolution disc's

"Nintendo 21" Rumor

I've gotta tell ya I'm not too sure about the newest rumor, but...just in case, I've sorta considered it. I'm not really going to go into detail on what the rumor states so much right now, just that I re-drew the really crude sketch that came along with the rumor under my own interpretation of it. The rumor basically talked about the fact that the system (shell design) would be like GCN (only more octagonal maybe?), play games from encased 5.4GB mini-disc's, was BC with GCN, had a built-in HD and Nintendo was working on an odd method of networking systems thru "Nintendo Homes" or whatever. The controller sketch with this rumor suggests a very basic controller (which fits with , no D-Pad, conventional buttons and no C-Stick. The revolutionary aspect of the controller interface was a rubbable sensitive skin not only over the buttons but over the entire controller? I know...it sounds strange! I think the person who was the source of this rumor really didn't know what they were talking about as they described it as a "rubbable" controller, which surely isn't all the revolutionary feature is. I'm thinking more along the lines of my sensory feeling idea instead. But anyways...here's my conseptual rough sketches based on the "Nintendo 21" rumor...

These are more rough than I hoped 'cos I drew them up so as to make the GAF Revolution Contest deadline, but you get the idea. I think Nintendo's possible aim is a smaller cube so as to make the system even more portable and that's one of the reasons to stick with mini-disc's (and encase them) so as to make it a more viable portable system. It will be used in tandum with the next GameBoy (GameBoy "Evolution"?) think like the TurboGraffix 16 where the same game works in both the console and portable. The rumor didn't talk about the controller being wireless but it made mention of a red switch (on/off, wavebird channel selector of some kind) nor did they talk of a screen being built-in to the controller but the rumor DID say there was an odd bulge in the middle of the controller and an expansion slot. Headset? Mini touch screen? I'm thinking both hopefully. The buttons were considered "warts" maybe so there is still the feeling of pressing and depressing them possible, but I think maybe the rubbable aspect means that developers could map out different functions for not only different areas on the controller, but also for different intensitives for which the player touches, or grips them. Like maybe lightly stroking the controller skin up and down could mean changing weopons while a basic hard press would be to fire a weopon? Who knows???

I posted this here weeks ago, but here's my take on the controller (very crude drawing)

revolution6zb.jpg

Two controllers, one for each hand. Wraps around the hand/knuckle area leaving the middle/index fingers to hit the trigger buttons. The thumb is free to rest on top of the controller where a joystick/and/or d-pad would be located.

Controller would be motion sensing/gyroscopic. From that position it could mimic a variety of devices like a gun, a lightsaber handle, a set of maracas, or say a pair of drum sticks.

You could shake, tilt, and move the controller any which way your hands would allow.
