From the same guy who said that he gives 2/10 to Gears 5 primarily because he hates Microsoft.
He rated Vanquish poorly because he sucked at the game.

Imagine actually believing this.

Some of the highest rated and best selling games of all time.

Sony was a far better gaming studios during the PS1-PS2-PS3 days. "Highest rated" and "best selling" aren't conclusive proof of anything.

I don't I rather have developers take their time making their games the best they can be and one of the main issues with several releases these last couple of years are publishers rushing games out.

So we get games that are half broken with a fix later approach I don't want this shit you are literally arguing for developers to rush their games out the door, in a broken state christ almighty the stupidity with this argument boggles the mind.

If CDPR wants to delay Cyberpunk 2077 for sixth months for additional polish I am all for it.
Well....my point was even that game that has that extra polish will come with a smaller day one patch. I want the game when it's done and ready to go (knowing that it'll have a small day one patch), rather than wait 75 years until the game has nothing to patch.

Do you really support this shit ? do you wanna see more these things happening ?
Guess what the options are....that's right it's either to stop playing vidya games or to be a pirate. Unless everyone outside of the echo chamber decides to stop paying for DLC, virtual currencies, loot boxes, etc, nothing that I do will make a lick of difference.

I am a consumer of my hobby. I want to be entertained by my hobby. At the end of the day, I can't be arsed to spend time and energy to be an activist on a non-issue. If Jim is going to blast every single publisher, then why bother playing video games.

This take is too hot - might wait for it cool down a bit.

I'm curious though. I "blame" Microsoft for Trojan Horsing western PC game design to the console environment, but that's probably a boon for the industry - just bad for my taste.

Now that PC design is "consolized" and console design "PC-ified", we have pretty tepid designs with cinematic scaffolding in the mainstream, but this is the majority by revenue, not the majority by titles.

Games are fucking great right now if you know how to find what you do (and would) enjoy.

Are you not gonna mention that The Last of Us, Killzone:Shadowfall, Uncharted 4, Gran Turismo Sport and MLB games, all have MTX ? Or do they get a pass for being Sony ?
Honestly, Microsoft does not have any serious MTX or sometimes none at all in their online games like Forza Horizon 4, Crackdown 3 and State of Decay 2. The ones in Killer Instinct, Sea of Theives and Gears 5 are very much harmless (if they are responsible for something then you may as well point your fingers to Sony's online games too). But ofcourse, it's the least popular console that is responsible for everything.

They did shut down Lionhead Studios and cancelled Fable for the XBO. They also canned the exclusive game they had partnered with PlatinumGames.
I've been saying this for years, but I get labeled as a Sony fanboy or whatever when I bring it up. Gonna actually give this one a watch.

Before watching, I hope he hits on:

  • Paying for Online
  • Horse armor/DLC originator
  • RRoD
  • Excessive bought timed exclusive BS
  • Dropping off of making quality exclusives midway through X360 generation
  • Ruining 1st party/purchased studios
  • Sitting on many great IPs but only making sequels to 3-4 franchises

Just want to point out that I have no leg in this race. I'm ambivalent towards all console manufacturers this gen (hell, I literally sold my only current gen console, the PS4, last year. So I have no bias).

Well, he isn't wrong really. If you pull out of his posturing, over use of too many needless words, bile being spewed, and just general pretentious attitude you can see his point, and they are valid points. He could have made that video in 7 minutes and not been such a douche about it.

He is once was an interesting watch and had something to say. But he has become like the angry video game nerd in that now he is no longer interesting anymore and has basically become this forced and concentrated version of what he once was to the point where it's so overbearing he rendered himself obsolete. Like he thought "large vocabulary, toy props, and stirring the shit is what people like so I'll just do it do it........a thousand times more!"

But yeah Microsoft is just a boring, cliche cookie cutter game company that does absolutely nothing compelling or original. I don't like what a single person from there has to say. Their games are not very good and I just simply have no interest in buying their next system. I dont hate them but I dont like them either.

I wouldn't say it's one company's fault, although Microsoft has definitely had a hand in it. Halo 5's warzone mode was a hot dumpster fire of mtx. I think just general greed have kinda ruined games for some people. Still I think they're been good, bad and middling games just like there has always been.

Xbox fans are the reason why MS games are bad. They will defend the games with all their honor yet will not purchase it but rather gamepass "rental". Enjoy your upcoming AA games folks.

Sony should absolutely be called out for its MTX bullshit with MLB: The Show, which has gone down the same greedy-ass Ultimate Team rabbit hole that Madden, FIFA, and NBA 2K have. Sony San Diego has given up on certain features (like online franchise) to focus more on Diamond Dynasty nonsense.

Overall, Sony bears a certain level of guilt like Microsoft does for hamfisting MTX into some of its first-party games. It may not be as egregious as what Microsoft has done (which is Sterling’s argument), but it is at least somewhat disingenuous that Sterling chose to overlook Sony’s first-party games that do have MTX.

Basically, there are no winners here. All three platform-holders are shitty. It’s only a question of which is less shitty, which often boils down to platform-loyalist takes.

Microsoft simply adopted the shit model. EA and Activision pioneered excessive monetization so it’s actually the 3rd parties and mobile games fault the industry is shitty. How could he miss the ball on that one soo much? He has been talking about it constantly for years 🙄

Jim has a point, the name of the video is click baity but MS are a part of the problem. They should be confident in their firsty party games without adding any shitty monetization methods. But the majority of their games do have it.

But the real fault is stupid fucking gamers, stupid fucking gamers everywhere with too much disposable money. Now I know when it comes to "surprise mechanics", people can have addiction problems and that is an entirely different thing. But I bet there were many stupid fucking gamers that bought the horse armour way back in Oblivion and there are many stupid fucking gamers who bought the XP boost in Assassin's Creed, the red dot in CoD and the new scavenging bots in Falout 76 as examples.

People keep buying these stupid things when they shouldn't. It's always going to have a roll on affect with future games. Publishers are always going to push the boundaries where they can. The XP booster in Ass Creed and the red orbs in DMC5, if people buy them they'll see there is money to be made in those areas and they'll design their games in a way to make people reach for their money.
Both Ass Creed and DMC5 could have just implemented easy modes so that XP and red orbs were easier to get. But why do it for free when you can charge for it?

He mentions EA as the ultimate root of this evil. His point is, by adopting the EA model (so enthusiastically, one should say) at the very beginning of the generation, they set the tone for it. They enabled these practices.

And many stupid gamers that defended online multiplayer paywall. People should not have supported that. I guarantee you that if people had called that out and fought it in the early 2000s, console online gaming would now be free for all.

Sorry I was too busy playing great games on my X and a killer BC library. =P

If you cant see the effect mobile gaming has had on consoles you need to take off your fanboy blinders. Sure MS tried to follow GAS but failed miserably. The funniest part about this whole concept is people blast MS for being a failure this gen yet still they were still somehow spearheading market trends. Which is it? You can't say both.

Quick history lesson.

Back when Zynga was the shit mobile games were making millions with very little overhead. We had tons of articles about how console games were dead and mobile was going to rule the world. Console and PC developers like EA and Activision saw this and began to try to incorporate FTP, in game currancy and gotcha hooks into their games. This didnt happen overnght. So years passed and the mobile market became over-saturated with FTP and PTW games. It was still healthy but kinda just there. Console and PC games continued to do well. So now you have Jim with a very short memory fitting a single piece to solve the puzzle. Stupid. JIm Sterling is a pandering piece of shit

Yea sure “set the standard” yet Sony is beating their ass by doing the exact opposite and Nintendo is still staying true to their core values of polished complete games. But noooooo it’s MS fault games are bad. This argument holds no fucking water especially since most of their first party games flopped hard 😂😂😂

In the age of loot boxes and aggressive micro transactions you seriously think online would be free? 😂😂😂😂. Guess what. PC MP ain’t free either because you still got to pay for that internet connection. Nothing is free in reality

Don't hold on to the clickbaity title so much. MS enabled those practices, they sent 3rd parties a clear message.

Genuine question, why does Jim Sterling get off being negative all the time?
Look at him, if he stopped being negative about life and did something positive he might actually feel better as well instead of being that fat.

Oh really? Guess what, you have to pay for electricity too. Nothing is free LOLOLOL
What a ridiculous argument for something that has no excuse.

If people fought against paying an arbritrary extra fee for online multiplayer, those other things would not have happened. And I said early on, years ago.
The success of the 360 then set really bad precedents on the industry.

Man did someone really just say PC gaming internet isn't free because you pay for your internet? C'mon guys, I really don't get defending every crappy practice because your preferred gaming medium practices it.
Not only that, DLC and MTX retroactively justify the introduction of online multiplayer fees. Apparently.

I agree 100%.
PC doesn't have or need a subscription. Console doesn't need it either, it's basically free money to Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo. The money they make from their hardware, 1st party titles and licensing fees would easily cover any online play system they need. Especially if it's going to be peer to peer.
Does anyone know if console is still primarily peer to peer or do they offer up servers now?

I'd actually say they've been better this gen than they were during the PS3 generation but that's just a personal opinion. PS1-PS2 had a lot of all time classics that helped reshape gaming forever but it must be noted that the cast majority of exclusive games during those generations were actually from third party studios rather than Sony's in house teams. They only really started heavily investing in their first party studios when they had their backs up against the wall during the PS3 era.

"Highest rated" and "best selling" aren't conclusive proof of anything.
For whatever reason it seems to be fashionable to say 'it's the people who are wrong' when looking at the dominance of the PS4 this generation (along with the success of individual games), why? Personally, on the whole I don't like Nintendo games, they're simply not my cup of tea. However they've done a fine job this generation and people have bought what they have produced (both hardware and software) in droves. I'm not going around saying "it's not proof of anything" or "I personally don't like it so it doesn't count". You should be able to recognise success stories regardless of your preferences rather than take on the strange stance of an aloof contrarian.

At the end of the day if Sony's biggest "crime" this generation is producing high quality popular games that you personally don't like then all things considered, it's not so bad.

They also gassed their entire SOE online game studio by selling it to an investor.

That’s definitely a one way street, nobody else on the planet would ever do that.

People use to say Sunset Overdrive. Now Sony owns that ip and suddenly they no longer care for it.
I need some receipts here. You like to make a a lot of generalizations and claims based on a fangroup you know very little about.

Show me where people started disowning Sunset Overdrive,

The majority of Sony's best game franchises all come from independent game studios they acquired.

The key ones still made in house are God of War, GT and their annual baseball game.

UC, LoU, Killzone, Horizon anything made by Media Molecule, all the Evo driving games, any legacy game from Sony Liverpool (Psygnosis) and more I'm missing are all from bought out studios at some point.

Other games like R&C, Spiderman and all their interactive movie games from QD are partnership games. Now Insomniac is bought out.

There's actually very few top tier Sony games made in house by Sony employees from the ground up.

Why do you have to besmirch their good name?

The only thing I will fault MS is they were the first ones to push paid online.

Now every online service on a console is behind a paywall.
Honestly though, it's the idiots who actually subscribed to XBL for years that should be blamed more than MS.

Did any of them go to Sony headquarters and force them to charge a fee?

You know who are the real asstards? The ones whooping and cheering at the Sony conference when they announced paid online.

Why not get mad at those douches instead of MS?

Nobody cheered for paid online. There was a moment of silence when paid online was mentioned.
Sony was sneaky in the way they announced it.

Don't get your panties twisted though, I ranted about it in forums at that time.

Still doesn't change anything about what I said.

I didn't realize so many people here hated Microsoft...I haven't really cared about most of their exclusives lately, but I dunno, I feel like they've put good games once in a while. The Halo series was a big deal back in the day, even if you think it's not that great in retrospect, I still think I'd enjoy playing Halo 1 and 3 even today. Same with some of the early Gears of War games. I played the remake of 1 on Xbox One, and thought it was still fun. I also remember really liking Gears of War 3 when it came out. They own Banjo Kazooie now, so they obviously have at least one good franchise still under their belt. I'm also one of the odd people who at least thought Nuts n' Bolts was fun.

I don't hate Jim Sterling, but I do find myself having a hard time wanting to support him because of his connection to Zoe Quinn, and obvious lack of calling her out after this latest fuck up she caused. That is his biggest strike for me personally, but I've always thought his arguments against shitty consumer practices are on point. They're obvious points, but they're accurate, and not complained about in a lot of media outside of him still.

This fanboyism from him in regards to not liking something cuz it's Microsoft seems kinda petty though. Sure, some of their games do have shitty microtransactions in em, but I've kinda felt that their games never felt diminished because of them. All major platform holders have at least one game under their belt with shitty microtransactions. Even Nintendo, which is sad, but fortunately Nintendo is usually smart enough to leave the really predatory ones out of their full price games.

It was cheered all the way through. Let’s not rewrite history.
Weren't people mainly cheering because they snuck in the online play behind PS plus, right after they said they weren't going to have DRM like Xbox One? I remember thinking it was slyly in their list of features as if it had always been there.

As someone who rarely plays games online, it pisses me off the most that online access is charged for, because in those once in a while situations when I wanna play a game online with someone, then I have to weigh whether or not I want to pay for that shit I barely use.
