So your argument is...
Uh, nope. The argument is over who normalized it, that's what my argument is about.

Everyone's contributed in some way or another to the shit sandwiches we're served today. I'd be hard pressed to quantify it in any meaningful way to see who deserves most of the "blame".

WTF you paid for Live? I’m disappointed in you! I bought a 360 one month after it launched and not once did I pay for Live. My nephew played Halo and wanted to play multiplayer and I told the fucker he pay for Live, not me.

I remember all that shit tho. Xbox fanboys be praising Live like it was worth paying for when you could play for free on PC and PSN.

Next up, gamepass :messenger_tears_of_joy:
Yeah, I paid for LIVE, only because I wanted to play SF online on that console, I also played SF on PC, but with XBOX, I had no choice lol.....Hell, you couldn't even watch Netflix or play a beta on XBOX without LIVE. MS having the upper-hand then, ensured that you were subscribed for the most trivial task and feature on XBOX,,,,,It's like LIVE was the beating heart of the 360, without it, the console was dead and worthless.....MS made sure that you felt the 360 was worthless without LIVE, that was their marketing there, its why they pushed it so hard as a multiplayer console....and the fans said no problem MS, you want to push that angle, we got you, we'll make it rain.....

About gamepass, yes, its definitely the next frontier for the marketing campaign and for MS, but I don't think its taking off as LIVE did. Funny enough, when you rent Gears 5 on PC........Oh shizzz, I'm renting more than Gears, I haven't even bothered to check the other games, but my $2 covers quite a few games then? How do they sustain all these games at $2? But yes, as I was saying......You realize that on PC, when you are on gamepass, you don't pay for LIVE for multiplayer........So PC guys are playing a better version of Gears and all MS titles, much better graphics and locked 60fps and they're playing they're online absolutely free. Has anybody justified why paying for LIVE on XBOX is a thing yet?

They prefer lower framerates, lesser visuals and they prefer to Pay for LIVE over free online on PC, whilst subbing to the same service????

Are we really still getting posts that think Jim doesn't like video games any more? Watch the video, he's talking about games being BAD with MTX, not bad quality.

There's a lot of reactionary posts from people jumping in to defend Microsoft's honor who won't watch the video. He does mention EA, Activision and their ilk as the root of the MTX evil. He does mention Sony and Nintendo also selling DLC, with Nintendo getting a nod as the cleanest of the three platform holders, and he even mentions a number of good things MS did at the end.

MS only contributed to the problems.

When they brought over the big Western Developers and wanted to charge a subscription for online, I would say that was when the problems started as it meant that the other Publishers could get away with it.

MS brought some good stuff as well though, such as quick updates and a better online service that forced Sony's hand ay improving their own online structure but the whole way they have done things early in the gen has caused some major problems looking forward such as online DRM and streaming licenses.

These threads would be graveyards if temp bans were handed out for people posting without actually watching the video the thread is about.

Y'all know that's true.
Yeah, a bit jarring to see so many resort to ad homs and non sequiturs.

How many more excuses can you make for Sony charging for online play? Yet another person blaming Sony's decisions on Microsoft's fans. This shit is just sad. Seriously.

You talk about nobody debating the facts and just going to insult then start in with snowflake bullshit. Blame each company for their own individual decisions. I know that will be hard for you seeing as you are the most famous Sony fanboy on these boards but at least give it a try. I'm gonna guess you'll just keep self-fellating and shouting about how MS forced this on poor Sony.

I guess I can counter your dumb ass logic with even more dumb ass logic and blame MS's stupid ass obsession with Kinect on Nintendo. DAMN YOU NINTENDO FOR FORCING MOTION CONTROLS ON MS.

I watched this yesterday, and honestly I think he plagiarized a good bit of his material from me (not the style).

By plagiarize I mean that I agree with him and made similar arguments before, he fleshed them out and researched more than I will ever care doing before making a statement like the ones he has made.
his obese angry dude milking "controversies" for views would go away if people just stopped watching. Can we try to do that? Please?

It behooves first party publishers to provide top quality productions that make their consoles worth buying. Nintendo and Sony have both produced amazing games to sell us on the PS4 and Switch. Microsoft, however, is different. Microsoft has decided to act no better than a grasping third party "AAA" publisher. Even worse, it set the tone of a generation and contributed - perhaps more than any other company - to the nasty normalization of excessive monetization. It's Microsoft's fault that videogames are bad.

Surely you agree with all his other rants how microtransactions and lootboxes are bad also or that EA, 2K and Activision are a blight in the current gaming industry. :lollipop_grinning: :lollipop_grinning: :lollipop_grinning:
Yeah, specially EA, because this shitty company ruin Star wars and the retard loot box.

Beware, before entering this thread you must think of corporations in terms of "good" and "evil". Decisions are made to either serve a greater good or an ultimate evil. You must clearly choose a side.

This video obviously is an evil ploy from Sony. Lies, all of it. Microsoft has never done anything but good to us all.

I like Xbox and all, but Jim did raise up some interesting and legitimate points. The Xbox One unveiling was unforgivable and unforgettable as well which I think changed the industry forever.

? That is an interesting fact but that wasn't the argument you were making when you brought up Killzone. As if the multiplayer in Ryse was any more relevant.

Bans for what? Reacting to an obvious troll of a headline. Or is it from assuming something from a creator who's been going on with this garbage for years. Thanks to this post I watched the video. Surprisingly it was even worse than I imagined. The beginning meanders around aimlessly throwing in talking points of Microsoft's past sins which of them discussed ad nauseam. It also highlights exclusives from Sony and Nintendo. It's like some shmorgasborg of fanboy talking points which reaches its conclusion based the idea that Microsoft was the Vanguard for the current horrible state of games because of, wait for it

Fucking Ryse, Lococycle, and Crimson Dragoon

And he even jokes about the irrelevance of the middle one. There is nothing of substance here. Just the same ol talking points wrapped up in a nice little "new" troll package to pander to his base. He even said all the actors are pretty much doing their own thing. How exactly did Microsoft ruin anything? At best Microsoft has only ruined Microsoft. And in some ways in the beginning of this gen they did but came out a better company for it

Though I will say it was nice to learn that Jim is still really salty about Microsoft entering the gaming market to combat Sony's dominance of the living room. Even though most of the history I read said this is a passion project from people within Microsoft. I'm not saying that they didn't use that as a selling point to the bean counters.

Am I required to purchase micro transactions to enjoy Halo 5? No? You mean they’re completely optional? Okay, then.

I’ve never bought a loot box and never will. If the presence of loot boxes offends you I guess don’t buy them? Easy solution to this “problem”.

Unless those lootboxes fundamentally change the way the game is played and provides an unfair advantage to the person who buys them (Halo 5 and Battlefront 2 both did this unabashedly).

People are just doing what Jim Sterling does.
Yup, drive-by comments are the same as close to 20 minute videos explaining your position.

Who argued the multiplayer in Ryse was more relevant than Killzone?

I love how everyone that likes Jim has to point out that people call him fat.
Learn to counter the actual issues brought up people.
If real arguments were brought up I'm sure someone would attempt countering them.

Great. Mission accomplished. You can actually contribute to the thread now without sounding like a complete idiot.

Try and make a habit of it, eh?

His point is...
The other platform owners made Exclusives that don't try to sell you microtransactions beyond the occasional expansion story if the game looks successful.
Microsoft is the only one among the platform owners where their games are riddled with microtransactions, both big and small.

Given how the microtransactions have become the bane of the medium, Microsoft looks like the scumiest compared to the other console makers. Their's aren't the worst if you compare them to EA or Activision, but they certainly showed that they are more than just "ok" with the idea... They full force support it!

KiteGr KiteGr You are a liar. Uncharted 4, for example, has microtransactions, and the previous instalments even had paid multiplayer maps. How is that less "scummy" than Gears where you play only for cosmetics (that can be earned by playing anyway)?

Uncharted 4 gave out all its DLC for free, the MTX were for the DLCs, the base game didn't have such things. Technically they gave you free content you could use MTX in, not really 1 for 1 example. They were also all cosmetic just like the ones in Gears so ::shrugs::

Explosive Zombie Explosive Zombie No idea why you felt the urge to write this. Did you even read with understanding the 2 post above yours?
I get what you're saying, you think the MTX in the free DLCs for Uncharted 4's multiplayer mean Sony is just as bad as Microsoft. Jim's video acknowledges the stuff Sony has done, it talks about Activision and EA, but he sees nuance in the equation like how Microsoft were the first ones to come up with the idea (check the thread earlier I linked an article) or how they were the first console to use them on 360, including the infamous horse armor which became the mascot for MTX being crap.

And let's not fotget lootboxes. The precursor to today's lootboxes was FIFA Ultimate Team, brought to us by EA, and originally an XBox exclusive feature.

Exactly--I played mainly Warzone (when it comes to multiplayer) and never spent a dime and had more cards than I could ever use. If anything I would complain about the amount of maps, at least in the beginning.

Wait, what Sony games had annoying micro-transactions at the start of the generation?
It's true - The Last of Us, Driveclub, Killzone:Shadowfall. At launch Microsoft had partnership with EA(Titanfall) and Sony with Activision(Destiny). Don't know how any of that factors into lootbox argument. MLB has been doing that shit for ages. I am sure Sony titles had more impact than Ryse.
