The King Of Fighters XIII Hype

niche fighting games don't need a ton of thrills, just a good online mode as you're not going to find random dudes to play with if you're not part of the competitive community, so you need that online to play when you feel like it. The type of player who buys an SNK game is going to want to play an SNK fighter- not go through KOF: the Dating Sim or King of Go Carts (though an SNK version of Twisted Metal would be interesting)

The single-player content works best on the large market games like SF, MK, Smash, and SoulCal.

the problem is SNK doesn't do good online.

I'm just saying though. Even the likes of BlazBlue, which is pretty niche itself, saw the value of having a Visual Novel-esque story mode to keep the casual players busy. Now ASW has a dedicated segment of players who will continue to buy the games, just to see where they'll go next with the nonsensical storyline. :lol

SNK has had that kind of appeal all along. People love their characters and their stories. But SNK never capitalized on such.

It's one of the things that makes it so a part of me honestly wished that SNK could be bought up ASW, so that we could be assured that ASW would help SNK make sure their future games had all the proper fixings (including good netcode). Even something along the lines of how ASW and Examu co-oped for AH3 would be already something nice...

SNK should still add stuff to it .
The PS2 version had fair amount of extra content.

Rumor : The King Of Fighters XIII present at EVO 2011
Source dreamcancel

In as a tourney game? Or just for it to be there is some form (like when Namco brought early Tekken 6 version that one year)?

I think they are just gonna have an arcade machine there (like at SCR). Hopefully they show the console version though@

Do want. If a console version of XIII is out and the console patch for BBCSII isn't out, they should just swap games.
Whats the deal with that?

There was also something of interest that Professor posted on MMCafe last week.

I'm a little late on these subjects--actually, I'm a little late on pretty much everything thanks to the damn situation on the east side here--but here's a few things that may spark some interest.

1. Eisuke Ogura still at SNKP : Nippon Chichi!!

Unfortunately the quake happened right before the EB fest, so the artwork never had the chance to go on public display. Pity.

2. NeoGeoFreak Section closing from Gemaga, and hints to..
According to reports, the SNKP page/column on Gemaga will end after this month's issue. The reports also say that SNKP publicist Yuzuko hints in this final column that "the game that everyone is anticipating will soon..."

It's legit, the section is closing down in this issue after its 6 years of running, and the slight comment is there. Still, it can be about anything. However...

3. Official KOF's novelist Akihiko Ureshino makes some really weird comments on Twitter (3/29).

I recently asked assistant manager Copplay, "Is it ok if I write a few short stories for KOF or MI and post them on my personal site?". Well, I've just received a call saying "Not now, We've got things on our side that we're thinking of". Is something going to happen soon!?

No, there's no way it's about MI. I can pretty much testify to that. There's nobody to make it anyway. Unless of course they're doing things without my knowledge. I guess it's because if I write anything fuzzy, people would still take it as an official word.

If they did give me the go-ahead, there's stuff I can write immediately, like a story about Alba and Soiree.

But if they're saying not to touch on KOF around this time of the year, I think it's not too hard to imagine things. Heh.

Curiouser and curiouser. Couple this with the persisting rumor of MOTW2 finally seeing release, and SNK could at least be going out with a bang, if nothing else.

Arc System Works has been mad silent. They probably don't want to cannibalize sales of the PSP and 3DS ports of CSII by releasing the console update, but now I'm worried it isn't coming at all.

Man, that info looks REALLY FAMILIAR...

Anyway, I hate bumps with nothing to watch... soooo, here's the latest KoF XIII Vids from the web, for any who are interested:

Women's Team Combo Video (11 Min)

Glorious 720P res, but desynched sound! Warning!
Arcade Infinity FAREWELL Tournament Part 1
Arcade Infinity FAREWELL Tournament Part 2

With Trouble Witches NEO! finally getting a solid release date today (April 27th!), at least it's nice to know SNKP is still moving, especially after the chain of constant horrors occuring in Japan right now...

Like I said, rumors. There's been rumors ever since the "Garou/Fatal Fury" anniversary event celebrated a few years ago, and they've never completely gone away. With this year marking Fatal Fury's 20th anniversary, now would certainly be a good time to make good on such a thing, if ever.

I don't really see a Garou 2 happening. :l

Unless you guys really want Garou 2 to only have Terry, Andy, Joe, Mai, Kim, Hwa and Raiden, of course.

Fatal Fury 2 HD Remix? I'll give them my money for that.

I'd still buy a remake of that game though.

After all the delay there will be no balance changes, still the extremely tier heavy mess it is today. . .

http://orochinagi.com/2011/04/frionel-spills-the-beans-about-xiii#comments

worth it? smh.

I really, really hope that they plan on having an "Arranged" mode. Even XI was able to have that much for those who didn't want to deal with KOGs (Kula, Oswald, Gato) in the "Original", arcade-perfect mode.

Pretty much the only thing that could begin to excuse this would be if SNK was already busy with something else, but even there...

KOF 13 was released last summer in Japan, where version 1.0 was at Tougeki, and then 1.1 was released to fix bugs. There weren’t any balance changes, just bug and infinite combo removal. There was a rumour that Raiden would be weaker in 1.1 but this was not the case. Now everyone is playing 1.1, even in the US. The question is, will it be released on console? For all the other KOFs it was announced quickly but for XIII, we heard nothing. The reason why we didn’t get an announcement is because today SNKP have a strategy of “all or nothing”. When they were working on XII, which wasn’t finished, they released it because there were commercial issues at stake with another game company resurrecting a huge fighting game saga (which I forget the name of ).

KOF 12 was an extremely ambitious project by SNKP, where they decided to use 2D and offer a rich and interest fighting experience, while staying in traditional 2D with a quality of pixel art never seen before. And it’s a very risky proeject because of the cost of developing an animated frame by frame, pixel by pixel game. It is far more expensive than developing a 3D game, where you create models and just add textures. The challenge was simple: keep KOF in 2D but attract a new audience and a new youth which would lead to the “re-birth” of KOF.

Today SNKPlaymore has a simple strategy. Their goal is not to replace SFIV or other big titles like that. They have their own niche market, and within that niche, their own niche of fans. They want to focus on these fighting games players; focus on the hardcore. In Japan, when you tell people you play KOF, you might as well tell them you’re mentally disturbed. SNKP want to keep that type of niche fanbase while attracting more of the mainstream without trying to dethrone SFIV because they know KOF just won’t appeal to that mass audience.

The problem was that if Capcom released a new version of SFIV when XIII was released on console, SNK would be left headbutting the wall – SF wouldn’t give KOF a chance – Capcom is a marketing steamroller. There isn’t one fighting game that can rival SFIV in terms of sales. It’s just impossible. Everyone can take advantage of the sales of SFIV for the fighting scene in general but they can’t compete with it. So the plan for SNKP was to make sure the release of XIII didn’t coincide with any other fighting game release. Because of that, SNKP wouldn’t say anything at all before Capcom announced SFIVAE – which they have now done, so now it is safe for SNKP to announce XIII. I can officially say it will be released before the end of 2011. Anytime from Summer onwards. It will contain extra features that are not present in the arcade and there will not be any balance changes. As for new characters, I cannot say, but there will be exclusive content such as characters, stages, music, things like that. The version is now officialised.

And there is very good news regarding the netplay. For those who already played it in arcade, they know there is a ‘reduce lag’ option*. This will be present in the console version. The feedback from testers is that the lag input option is better than SFIV’s. SNKP understands that the game’s success may well depend on the netcode. So yes, KOF XIII is arrriving and official news will be coming very very soon, now that the threat of SFIV interfering has passed. At this time of year, nothing can get in the way, so keep checking the usual sites and you will get info.

One last thing, I play KOF 13 in Paris Arcades and it seems the game is the most played there. Why? Because it is magic. It’s hard to define with words but SFIV players are jealous when they see us playing this game.

ON makes a good point: That "reduce Lag" option on the arcade cabinet is for HD TV lag. But if I remember right, it achieves this by changing input buffer windows a bit, which is similiar to half of what makes BB's netcode feel so good. So it's not THE input detection stuff we'd all like to hear... but it's somewhat on the same.. page? In the same book. maybe? XD

No lies, they are the market leader in rock solid online play out of the Nippon.
If Arc published the game like they did with Examu's Arcana Heart 3, that would be beyond awesome.

They need to do something. Like I've said before, I wouldn't mind SNK and ASW becoming partners, if it meant that SNK could still do its own thing, but just always go to ASW for the sake of quality netcode solutions. It's worked out well for Examu, and it could definitely be to SNK's benefit as well.

I hope and hope. I can play SSF2HDR lag-free in my shitty small-town Internet, but DOA4 has average-to-bad lag for me (can't find anyone in my other fighters). If I could play XIII and MK on the same level as HDR I would be covered for fighting games for the next couple years (no interest in Capcom's current BS).

Between this finally coming out and MK, I'm in a great position to watch Capcom crumble.

It's good to not see a monopoly in the 2D fighting genre.

Of course, we'll see how the tourney scene handles these games in the long run, or if Capcom still reigns there.

I hope ASW is indeed helping.

Because SNK needs all the help they can get to push product out the door that's worth anyone's time/money.

Oh snap!

The biggest whiner about me ruining SF threads has shown up to pee in our Wheaties.

Fortunately this is an SNK thread so I'll just input the command to roll out of the way with my bowl of Wheaties. :p

Keep it in mind next time you start crying about people ruining threads man.

I hope the console version at least has some extra characters.

But the part where it says the balance will be identical to the arcade release kinda shuts it down. :(

Please have Oswald and Blue Mary!
