The Left 4 Dead thread of information and HOLY CRAP ZOMBIES THEY'RE EVERYWHERE

I've been taking a little break from FPS games, particularly online FPS. If it weren't for L4D, the possibility of this break becoming unbreakable could have been quite real. Good timing Valve.

Also, gmod this game for ultimate winage.

Same here. I guess it looked so smooth because it was locked at 30 as opposed to jumping around. I was thinking about getting the 360 version but I'm leaning towards the PC version now.
I'll still be getting the 360 version myself, since if I were to buy it for my PC, the framerate would be even lower than 30 fps (even at Medium / Low) and would constantly drop a number of frames. My computer's that antiquated.

That, and the Left 4 Dead port didn't look nowhere near as inconsistent (on a technical level) as The Orange Box from what we've seen. I'm glad Valve decided to let someone else take care of the Xbox 360 version, since if they were to take care of Left 4 Dead 360, it probably would've been another mediocre port at best.

Yeah, it may be difficult to compete with retail (in Europe at least) at $50. I'm gonna wait until we know if the pre-purchasers will be beta testers as well.

About the Game

New from Valve — creators of Counter-Strike, Half-Life and more — Left 4 Dead is a new game for the PC and Xbox 360 that casts up to four "Survivors" in an epic struggle against hordes of swarming zombies and terrifying "Boss Infected" mutants.

Set in the immediate aftermath of the long-awaited zombie apocalypse, L4D's survival co-op game mode is played out across four sprawling "Movies" set in a variety of urban and rural environments. Each "Movie" has an over-riding team objective, is comprised of five large maps, and may be played by 1 to 4 human players.

New technology dubbed "the AI Director" is used to procedurally generate a unique experience each time the game is played. Just as in Hollywood films, the Director calls for new monsters, sounds, and action as it tailors the gameplay experience based upon the team's performance.

Due for a worldwide release on PC and Xbox 360 this November, Left 4 Dead also includes new multiplayer modes.

* Addictive co-op action gameplay from the makers of Counter-Strike and Half-Life
* Advanced artificial intelligence drives both friendly and unfriendly creatures to dynamically create intense single-player, co-op, and multiplayer experiences every time the game is played
* 20 new maps. 10 new weapons. Four sprawling "Movies"
* Match making, stats, rankings, and awards system drive collaborative play
* Designer's Commentary mode allows gamers to go "behind the scenes" of the game
* Powered by Source and Steam

Did the 8 player multi get canned?

edit: oh...the way it says "1-4 human players" really jumped out at me. It says coop and multi farther down.

It was never more than optimism when Valve said the 4v4 vs. mode would be in at launch. I talked to a couple people at PAX, both who said that if it doesn't make it for launch, it'll be a (free) update soon after.

We must prepare teams for the zombie apocalypse, my brothers!

Maybe someone could work on the online threads near the release date of the demos?

So should I just cave for a 360 and get this game? I've heard rumor of a PS3 release but nothing new has been mentioned of it since the rumor.
why not upgrade your pc?

I can't get used to a mouse and keyboard for a shooter to save my life. Tried it with CS and failed miserably. :/

It will probably have controller support. TF2 did. I think Valve is working to have it in more games anyways.

More info on L4D servers: http://www.halflife2.net/2008/10/31/left-4-dead-server-informations/

Eric Smith has released the following regarding Left 4 Dead dedicated servers:

We'll be releasing the Left 4 Dead dedicated server files prior to the Left 4 Dead demo being released. More details will be sent to the mailing lists when we have them. There are two things to keep in mind regarding running a Left 4 Dead server:

1) The CPU load for the Left 4 Dead server will be higher than you're used to for games like TF2. Left 4 Dead has a bunch of A.I. for the zombies, etc., that games like TF2 don't have.

2) Left 4 Dead uses a new matchmaking system we're developing. We'll be working with the server admin community to make sure the new system operates as smoothly as possible. More details on this later.
