Good to see the SE is 2GB of RAM, but disappointing that the 9.7" iPad Pro is. All the more reason for Air 2 owners to be satisfied with their purchase.

Okay, it's now pretty much a toss-up between the 64GB iPhone SE and the Xperia Z5 Compact. Can anyone give me the 'pros' of iOS over Android? I've never used iOS before, but I've used Windows Phone, Android, Sailfish and BB10 as a frame of reference.

TBQH, I actually like Android better than iOS and WP/W10 more than either when it comes to the UI. However, iOS devices are extremely fast/fluid (look at the browser benchmarks for objective numbers) and the app store is by far the largest and best. Beyond that, a lot of the convenience features (built-in f.lux-like NightShift, guaranteed updates, full disk encryption, Find My Phone/Find My Friends, iMessage, WiFi calling, visual voicemail, live photos, actionable notifications) are either unavailable or unreliable/non-standard on Android.

I do miss the Live Tiles of WP/W10 and the quick-settings panel of Android (as well as the ease of dismissing upcoming alarms and the notification light on supported devices). Android also allows for some neat device inter-op via 3rd party extensions such as PushBullet that aren't available on iOS (except if you only use Apple devices).

I can't believe they aren't adding 4 gigs of ram since they are calling it pro. Us air 2 owners sure are not going to be feeling any buyers remorse as probably what air owners were when they released the successor.

Man I love, love, LOVE my air one but it can be such ass for web browsing which is all I use it for. Can only manage 1 tab at a time. Not giving it 2gb when it clearly needed it felt malicious at best.

Not tempted to get another tablet anytime soon, I'm still on iOS8 and will probably never upgrade given how I know iOS upgrades can be.

Still love this damn tablet tho. Lets see if it can hold out till the air 4.

I'm pretty much in the same boat. I would just absolutely love the 4GB of RAM considering I can't browse more than one or two tabs on my Air 1. I'm really digging Pencil support, though. It would help me a great deal with note-taking.

One thing I don't get is where the hell is the tv 4 remote app? Shouldn't it take Apple, a gigantic company with endless resources like 5 minutes to make a simple iOS app? What's going on with that?

Yup :( Not being able to download RCT3 was the last straw! That 2gb RAM in the 9.7" has put me right off the Pro though - I'm not paying near £200 more than an Air 2 when the internals are barely improved.

I might get an Air 2 and just put the saving towards upgrading sooner than I would have otherwise, but part of me is annoyed at buying a device over a year old when I could have upgraded sooner, and essentially rewarding Apple for cheaping out on specs. Argh. Decisions...
Yes indeed, so many problems. And beyond the one you listed what's also bugging me is knowing that the next iteration most likely will have 4 GB of RAM and possibly 4k display. The question is when this will be, especially now that the RAM was significantly than expected, this winter, a year ahead...
My current 3 is intolerable, but maybe an Air 2 is the better choice.

Also what impact does the 4 GB of RAM have? Geekbench gives lower scores than the Pro but still a lot higher than an Air 2. Is the major effect with 4 GB that more GAF-tabs can be stored at the same or is it something different?

If you have an iPad 3 an Air 2 would still absolutely crush it.
Yeah I know, it would be a enormous upgrade regardless of choosing the Air 2 and the 9.7 Pro. But this would be a tablet which would stay with me for the next four years (as my ipad 3), however buying a device already 1.5 years old is against my thinking. I have a lot of thinking to do...

Now that I've decided to keep my pro instead of downsizing to the smaller one because of the 2GB RAM, I really wish Apple would release more colours in the smart case.

Didn't they update the old app to work with the new Apple TV?

It was updated to basically work, but Apple also said there would be a further update to make it have all the functionality of the Siri remote - so you can use Siri or dictation from the Remote app, for instance.

For anyone that might have wanted a 9.7" Pro but now are looking at the 12.9" model because of the ram, the 12.9" is currently $100 off at Best Buy.

Oh shit really?

That changes things...

Ok help me guys. I've got an iPad3, I don't upgrade this stuff often.

Pro 9.7 or 12.9 for web browsing, games and video?

Also panzer confirmed 2gb on both the se and nano iPad Pro.

Oh shit - no 4GB on the pro 9.7? So what the hell are apple charging $100 more for?

I know it probably doesn't make a big difference and some of the 4GB is for the larger screen on the 12.9, but it really feels poorer value now.

Just like the dedicated Mac OS Apple Music app amirite

Yes, Eddy practicing his Demo Dance right now

My Nexus 7 has 2GB RAM and that was a budget tablet from summer 2013.

4GB would have future proofed it for about 4-6 years but Apple don't want that.

Ehh, 2GB isn't the deal breaker you guys are making it out to be, at least for me.

I actually want the pencil and Smart Keyboard, and the processor is still faster than the air 2. Combine that with the screen tech and it's worth the extra money to me over an Air 2.

I'm still in.

Nah, fuck off Apple you cheapskates. 2gb of ram in the 'pro' is just shit. Again you will have safari crashes and not being able to have many tabs open. And the price for the lowest model in Australia is now $899. Bullshit.

You don't think the keyboard will be too small to touch type on?

I hope Logitech do a version of the create. It was too heavy on the large pro, but should be more managable on the 9.7

I type on a Logitech "keys to go" now which is the same width as the new Smart Keyboard. It's fine once you get used to it.

The only thing I don't like about the Logitech is the keys are a little mushy. Width is fine.

I'm not a fast typist, though. My style is "unique".

Apple really shit the thread with the iPad pricing in Australia since the Pro. First the gimped 32GB 12.9" for $1249 and now the 9.7" for $899.

It is not out of the realm of possibilities that 3D Touch may not lift off, but its implementation, afaik, has its challenges on a display level (think the 6s display assembly is quite heftier than the one on the 6), and these are bigger the larger the display is.

If 3D Touch dies, which I hope not, I hope it passes a legacy that in some manner can be reproduced with a different method. For example a long press on the home screen icons to get quick actions. I've always thought that it's a waste of a good gesture that a long press on any icon just activates edit mode for the whole home screen. Something else can be done to achieve that.

Do we think an Air 2 can last another 2-3 years before becoming annoyingly slow or losing access to big games (e.g. the 3rd gen can't run RCT3)?

I'm considering one despite it having been out a while given the price of the Pro.

Absolutely. Being the first of its 2GB kind will ensure it a healthy life. Even the fact that new Pro still has 2GB can attest to that. Besides its SoC was ahead of the curve as well, with beastly performance from the get go.

In comparison the iPad 3 also debuted 1GB of RAM but it came with a dramatically higher memory footprint due to the Retina display it also debuted. On top of it the SoC was just a souped up variation of the previous year chip, with stronger graphical capabilities (but then again it needed to drive 4x the pixels), but basically the same CPU as the iPad 2. It was born grasping for air (no pun intended). The Air 2 is s different beast.

You'll be fine.

Unless I can use it to input keystrokes I don't really see the point. The tv 4 keyboard is the worst thing ever to deal with. Also, I'd like to control the tv 4 with my watch .. I don't think they've updated it for either of these.

I thought they updated it for both. I've definitely used my Watch with an ATV4.

This has worked for months now.

I hope the 2GB of RAM in the iPad Pro doesn't bode poorly for the iPhone 7 Plus.

Wait, what? The smaller iPad Pro has only 2GB?

edit: missed the last page...

That is super disappointing. I swear, Apple just loves to throw in one or two crippling flaws in their smaller-sized products. Frustrating.

That 2GB RAM horseshit pushed me to just get a refurbished iPad Air 2. $180 less and twice the storage. Hopefully I won't regret it. I'm upgrading from an iPad 4.

The "looping" references I've seen places, what is that about?

It's official: I'm switching cycles. The math, timing, and pros and cons all for out. If I can make it happen, day fucking 1 for iPhone SE.

Question now is, anyone want a 64GB 6 for 300? Regardless, time to hit up the pawn shops tomorrow to get a good offer.
