The Official Red Steel 2 thread of nearly 1:1 sword slashing

“It’s incredibly satisfying, really exciting. I’ve been working in games for 12 years and this is the first time that I feel we’re going to give the fans something really cool that they’ve never seen before. And I genuinely mean that. It’s not just marketing bullshit, this is something new that you’ve never done before and it’s really fun. It’s a great feeling to be able to say that” - Creative Director, Jason Vandenberghe

ABOUT

Ubisoft announced Red Steel 2, exclusively for the Wii(TM) system from Nintendo. Red Steel remains one of the most successful Wii titles and the only brand created specifically for the launch of the platform. Red Steel 2 is being developed by Ubisoft Paris.

Red Steel 2 returns with an artistic style and flair created just for Wii. Set in a desert-bound, high-tech metropolis, Red Steel 2 is a revolution in the action-fighting genre, taking full advantage of the capabilities of the Wii MotionPlus(TM) accessory. Your movements are faithfully replicated on-screen, putting the emphasis on swinging, shooting and fun! With the ability of the Wii MotionPlus to sense the strength of a swing, you will literally be able to make an impact on your adversaries through power and precision.

“Red Steel was a unique opportunity for Ubisoft to work in tandem with Nintendo to create a title exclusively for the launch of the Wii console,” said Tony Key, senior vice president of sales and marketing US at Ubisoft. “Red Steel 2 is another milestone for the company as it is the first Ubisoft title with full Wii MotionPlus integration.”

Just as Red Steel broke ground as the only third-party brand created for the launch of the Wii, Red Steel 2 will be the must-have game of Spring 2010 for those who wish to stretch their own capacities and fully experience a game that was built from the ground up to take advantage of the Wii MotionPlus.

REVIEWS

Official Nintendo magazine

"This is probably the best third party wii game we've played in recent memory. A great deal of thought has gone into every aspect of Red Steel 2. The visual design is stellar, but most importantly its evident that ubisoft has put the necessary amount of time into making sure the controls and the balance are (almost) pitch perfect. It's been a long time coming but finally we have it. After watching Shiggy waggle the wii remote on stage at E3 2006 and having our ballooning expectations deflated, we now have the sword game we all wanted. It's taken new technology and the best part of three and a half years to get it, but precious few will argue that it hasn't been worth the wait. Red Steel 2 is finally here and it's awesome."

Kotaku review

http://kotaku.com/5500030/red-steel-2-review-if-only-2006-was-this-good

"In the same month that Red Steel 2 reaches Wii owners, Sony has loudly proclaimed that its Wii-style Move controller is the device that will enable the best motion-controlled gaming experiences that appeal to fans of so-called hardcore games. But you don't need a Move to feel just how impressive and involved an action game can be when controlled by your motions. Red Steel 2, a game any PS3 owner ought to hope comes to the Move, shows that Sony's console wasn't essential to make this happen. Ubisoft is on a streak of sequels-as-atonement that began with Assassin's Creed II. It has now built not just one of the Wii's best games and not just one of the most radically improved sequels in many years but a motion-controlled game with previously unfelt depth of control and excitement of action. To understand how well motion-gaming can feel, Red Steel 2 is a must play. This is a 2006 Wii promise delivered."

Examiner Red Steel 2 review

http://www.examiner.com/x-12218-Video-Game-Examiner

"If Red Steel 2 was what Red Steel was back in 2006, then this series would be the top Wii third-party franchise. You have to disregard the existence of Red Steel and go into this series with untainted eyes because Red Steel 2 is everything Ubisoft promised and plenty more. It's one of the best video game sequels ever made and not playing this groundbreaking Wii game would be an injustice. Ubisoft has finally shown us what kind of games can be made for Wii and has set a new benchmark for Wii FPS titles and any Wii game that may use a sword. Red Steel 2 is the top Wii game of 2010 right now."

"The first let so many down, while part two succeeds in just about everything it set out to do. Maybe it’s the bundled MotionPlus, maybe it’s just better programming, but we left Red Steel 2 thinking it could be the most improved sequel of all time. If you’ve given up on Wii shooters, here’s a reason to rethink your stance."

IGN US REVIEW

http://wii.ign.com/articles/107/1079106p1.html

"Red Steel 2 is absolutely an "A product." It's clear that the development team wanted to right the wrongs of the original game and produced an all new design with controls that actually work. There are still some issues, both in game balance as well as wishy-washy motion sensing control, but the awesome style and energetic gameplay are enough to make this one of the top titles on Wii."

"Few other Wii games provide a comparable sense of hard-hitting action fused with the gritty and rugged nature of a true action title. You really do feel like a sword-swinging, gun-toting badass in the heart of the Wild West, and you hold no remorse for your shameful adversaries. You can truly “feel” the impact of your actions on your enemies, and this sensation is only accentuated by the application of the Wii motion controls."

IGN UK REVIEW

http://wii.ign.com/articles/107/1079264p1.html

"There's no doubt that designing Red Steel 2 around Wii MotionPlus controls was an inspired decision, and Ubisoft deserves enormous credit for demonstrating just how much potential resides in Nintendo's woefully underused tech. As a template for how to combine shooting and swordplay within one intuitive, fluid control system, Red Steel 2 is an incredible achievement. But the bottom line is that the game takes a little too long to get going, and when it does it's all over way too soon." - they say its 8 hrs, others have said 10-12

"Red Steel 2 is definitely a big step forward when compared to the original. It’s not perfect, and you will find yourself rolling your eyes at the tedious training sessions, groaning while yet another door stands in your way, and wishing the game was just a little bit more responsive to your every move. However, there’s still plenty of fun to be had and the eight to ten hours you'll spend working your way through the campaign will deliver many smiles."

VOOKS
http://www.vooks.net/story-18978-Red-Steel-2--Hands-On-Impressions.html

"The first time I played Red Steel 2 I came away impressed but not astounded. This time I was blown away. It was genuinely fun to play and I just wanted to keep going and going with it. The swordplay/gunplay mashup is awesome fun and you’ll find different combos and moves that work better."

IGN
http://wii.ign.com/articles/107/1070807p1.html

"I was only allowed to plow through the first few missions, but these at least show the variety of levels and the balance and variety they have. In some you'll just have to take down waves of bad guys from the other clan, while in others you'll have to seek out their trucks and blast them out of commission. Along the way you'll find crates, barrels, bottles and other items that can be opened and smashed for cash, and you'll turn this extra money into additional moves and weapon upgrades. There are even hidden treasures like Sheriff Stars tucked away that'll earn you even more money. "

G4
http://g4tv.com/games/wii/43463/red-steel-2/articles/69961/Red-Steel-2-Preview/

"Fantastic swordplay would have been enough, but judging from the couple hours I spent putting the game through its paces, Red Steel 2 fixes and awesome-ups everything about the original. It's just pure, drool-inducing video game fun. Red Steel 2 looks amazing; The shooting game is spot-on, the Wii MotionPlus-exclusive controls are as tight as a rich guy’s fist, the action is frenetic and non-stop, and while there's nothing heavy and "important" here, it's all-out, kickass jaw-dropping action fun... and isn't that what's really important?"

Eurogamer
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/red-steel-2-hands-on_4?page=1

"The main difference between Red Steel 2 and the original, however, may not be the improved controls so much as the fact that you'll genuinely want to put in the time to master them in the first place. With a sugary rush of missions, dungeons, and upgrades riddled with collectable Sheriff's badges and oddball unlocks, 2010 might just be the year that face buckles finally go mainstream"

Kotaku
http://kotaku.com/5476604/hands+on-sword-out-with-red-steel-2

"Its combination of broad and precise motion, its colorful aesthetic, come together to deliver an experience far more fun than the original Red Steel. Being only about half-way through the title, it's too early to tell if there will be enough of those complex fights and blending of motions to make the game the sort of deep experience I want, or whether the end result will be a game that feels too light, too easy to be satisfying."

Joystiq
http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/22/red-steel-2-preview/

"Red Steel 2 may have received a cosmetic makeover from its predecessor, but it's still lacking a key element: fun. Perhaps 2010 will change all that, and I'll be able to enjoy an inspired version of Red Steel 2 ... on my space ship, with my robot buddies "Chuck" and "Max." I can't wait for 2010!

Best of luck,
2009 "

Consider our expectations slashed. Red Steel 2 takes what you thought you knew and carves it up.

CUBED 3
http://www.cubed3.com/preview/329/

"Red Steel 2 has come along nicely since it was first shown off at E3 last year . The swordplay mechanics have been refined to the point that - with minor exceptions when performing very broad motions - the game responds perfectly to your actions, resulting in a satisfying and immersive experience. The coalescence of Japanese, Western and modern inspirations into a cohesive visual style is also a treat for the eyes, and especially impressive at a consistent 60 FPS. Worth a look from any self-respecting Wii owner."

"We actually shifted to the Lyn Engine, which is internal Ubisoft tech. It's being used for a lot of projects and being developed across multiple platforms, but was originally developed specifically for Wii. We were able to start over with an engine that from the beginning gave us a real head start," said Vandenberghe.

Cautiously optimistic for this. I like the art design and quick switching between gun and sword. Feels like plasmids + drill :D

Might I suggest bolding sub-titles in the OP though?

I camped out for a Wii at launch and RS was the game I was most excited for. I felt it was a huge disappointment, but I am optimistic about this game. I love the new art style, I will need to read a lot of hands on impressions from other GAF'ers before I buy it though.

I love official threads that dont seem to even vaguely mention when the actual game is coming out. Thanks for all these useless soundbites and developer interviews though!!

INTERVIEW

Is Caldera the whole land and not just the city?

Let’s talk about the world of Red Steel 2 a little.

Caldera is a city in what is generally known as the “Nevada Territories”. It’s kinda northwest of Las Vegas, off the beaten path a bit, in what’s affectionately known as the “High Desert” (a.k.a. the Mojave Desert) – an elevated, hot, flat, chunk of the Rocky Mountains.

The land surrounding Caldera is named “Caldera County” as well, and one big crater was the most interesting landmark (a “caldera”, for the curious, is another word for a big sinkhole or crater).

So, no, Caldera isn’t the whole land. The “world” of Red Steel 2 is the Red West.

In fact, “the Red West” is a phrase used to describe the whole western part of North America.

Will there be other places than desert in the game?

But of course. The whole story takes place in and around the city of Caldera, and there’s a lot of different kinds of environments in that place. Ancient temples, ramshackle slums, desert, huge modern freight-moving systems… it’s a real city. Then you’ll roll on out into surrounding canyons, where you’ll find a pueblo-style mining town, a huge semi-automated strip mine, old, abandoned underground tunnels, an ancient ancestral monastery / temple clinging to the side of a cliff…

But if you mean “do you go anywhere cold, like the moon or something” the answer is no.

Will there be weather effects in Caldera (rain, sandstorms, etc.)?

Yes. When we were conceiving the ‘mood’ for each level, we tried to give the weather, time of day, and general atmosphere for each space a unique feeling, one that would fit the gameplay for that location. Honestly, there were a few times where our ambience people (lighting, VFX, audio, etc) showed us some stuff that we were convinced wasn’t possible on the Wii… but they did it.

Will there be night, dusk and dawn in the game?

The gameplay takes place over several days, and the Sun in the Red West rises and sets just like it does in the real world. What I mean to say is that there will be a few night levels, yes.

Are there living people anywhere? I know the inhabitants left but are there any remaining?

Yes! Yes indeed! Crucial, key, power-granting inhabitants! You should be discovering that in the near future, in fact what I can tell you is there are four inhabitants of great importance the player that you will encounter repeatedly, get missions from, buy cool powers from, and who, in general, will help convey to you the Story. That is, assuming you don’t skip the cutscenes.

(By the way, every time you skip a cutscene, a fairy dies somewhere. I’m watching you.)

Gotta love the outdated quotes.

Just as Red Steel broke ground as the only third-party brand created for the launch of the Wii, Red Steel 2 will be the must-have game of Holiday 2009

And isn't it a little too early for an official thread? I thought the game was coming in late march.

Does this come out earlier than March 23 in other territories? Still a ways off, but I'm intrigued enough to keep an eye on it.

Market the heck out of this game emphasizing the near 1 to 1 motion sword controls and you got yourself a multi million seller Ubisoft.

March 25th is I believe the release date in the US.

I was really excited over those E3 walkthrough videos, then again with the sequences involving the new ninja enemies they recently unveiled, but everything inbetween and since has been underwhelming. It' so close to release yet we've got no lengthy gameplay videos outside press demos and the few tidbits they give us, while the closer they get to release the more they rely on showing cut scenes instead of gameplay. Which aren't even great knowing they're not real time. I still hope it delivers but I doubt it will...

That's quite a leap of faith. Oh, they praised Sony's next big thing when asked about it, they must be thinking of Red Steel 3 on it. It might be true, but that will hardly be the reason for it. More like Ubisoft requesting a PS3 RS game if they think there's a market. And why wouldn't they I guess, they may want to capitalise on it like they did the Wii's launch.

I don't know why all the games are cramped to the end of March and begin April (NMH2, Red Steel 2, Monster Hunter 3) in Europe (maybe they know my birthday is in mid March?) but I'll be getting all those games day one to support those who support the Wii in a serious matter (and to play the awesome games ASAP of course).

This is the next game on my must-have list. Although, I've already pre-ordered the Monster Hunter Tr i bundle.

I really love the game's slick art style. It's just very stylish and colorful. In a way, it kind of reminds me of Mirror's Edge.

The sequel really is different from the first title. I mean, the original Red Steel was more of a linear, FPS arcade-style game with forced specific sections of swordplay combat. The sequel is pretty much the opposite.

IGN mentioned that it got a chance to play Red Steel 2 again in its podcast last Monday but it hasn't written an updated hands-on impressions of it yet.

I hope we'll get to see new footage of the game showing off different enemies and combat techniques.

I just saw that first 10 minutes 'leak' ... interest rising again :lol

It seems that same old press demo tutorial area has had quite a few changes. And they took the Borderlands comparison to heart or something, with all the quests and shit. it doesn't look as pretty as you'd hope from the very first videos though. And I dislike the slash effects they have added in place of blood. But that looked fun. I hope less cut scenes and more gameplay and some more open level design. But it looked fun. I have hope again :lol

John Harker

Definitely doesn't make things up as he goes along.
In that EGTV interview he made it fairly obvious RedSteel as a franchise is coming to the other systems, however RS2 is definitively "Wii Motion Plus" exclusive.

So probably RS3 with mutliplayer will be multiconsole

I'm fairly certain RS coming to PS3/Xbox was also leaked not too long ago on some docs anyway.

But yah, RS2 as we see it now is still Wii exclusive so no worries.
Though it's kind of funny how Ubisoft won't bring over NMH: heroes Paradise Xbox cause of the Wii equity, yet with their own titles they will drop Wii exclusivity and go multi plat ::shrug::

NMH = Niche otaku game.

Red Steel = Shooter

Just add a big grunting marine and more weapons and you have a 360/PS3 hit.

No, seriously, if this game doesn't sell then Wii game fanatics have to blame themselves for not buying it. I don't care if the schedule is (too) tight (legs will fix that), but it's the only WM+ action game with a good budget and talent behind it. It's the only game doing the actual sword thingy showed in the remote-only trailer that Nintendo used before the Wii launched. Buy it, even if you plan on playing it later (I will be busy with MH3 myself) D:

What if it sucks? That "talent" is the same as in the first game. And face it, it's hardly "AAA" quality, at best it will be great. At worst, well... Red Steel Redux.

I think we're competent enough to judge how a game is without even playing it. You don't have to play a Petz game to realize they suck. I haven't played most HD games yet I know which ones are good just by watching videos. It's easy to tell >_>

Plus I'm the type to buy games not based on reviews if that's what you're saying. Reviews say God Hand sucks and Monster Hunter is a mediocre game. Phoenix Wright sequels are apparently rehashes and Street Fighter games are niche and get average scores.

What are you trying to ask/say anyway?

If it sucks why should it sell, duh. That's what I was saying. And when did I say anything about reviews? And how much of this game have you seen to already know it doesn't suck? A tutorial area and glimpses of other sets? The jury's still far out for this game. We have nothing to judge level design, even game design and pace on, only that the fighting looks fun enough, but not fun enough to carry an otherwise lackluster game. And questionable choices for some kind of perverted lean toward pre-rendered cut scenes (that don't even look that great honestly, I was impressed when I thought it's realt-time as I was just glad to see more of the graphics they have crafted for the game, but it wasn't that after all) and quick timer events. Everything else has yet to be seen enough to judge it as a whole. Hell only with that leaked first ten minutes we see it's mission based, that wasn't even seen in any of the previous videos or screenshots. But hey, kudos to Ubisoft for being able to convince you already. I'll wait and see.

Right, because everyone does so much research to buy games. I don't know about you, but if you really need to know that much and this game happens to not sell, then all those things are just looking for excuses why it didn't sell. You think people buying every other game does that much research? I sure don't and the average joe even less. This game looks good. That's all there is to say. By good I don't just mean graphically. Gawd, I've noticed your posts in other threads too, you're just a nitpicker.

Well.... no.

I mean, you´re right in a few points, but what if the game get NO advertising? At all?

You know it is possible.
No More Heroes 2 got no advertising.
Just one or two banners that 2 people max noticed. Back in the release week most gafers didnt had the slightest idea that the game was almost out.

So what if Ubi "forgets" to advertise Red Steel 2? Its the consumer´s fault? People have to guess when the game comes out?

And by the way, there is a chance that the game turns out to be a piece of crap. I dont think it is, i think it will be one of the best Wii games to date. But yet, there is a chance...

Uh, lol? If quality doesn't matter then why aren't you proclaiming that there's no core audience on Wii because The Conduit failed to sell a million+ ? And hey, if we're talking purely sales as opposed to what the game "deserves" then the weight is on the marketing, and unless you're a fortune teller, you don't know what marketing it will have, so how can you already talk about what sales it should get? You also contradict yourself talking about a "core" audience and then how the "average person" doesn't look into games that much. Does the core audience not look into games more? And if not, what the fuck makes them core? At least with reviews that you quickly dismissed because you personally don't look into those? Your post was a clusterfuck of points that have nothing to do with each other and contradictions basically, half the time talking for your preferences and opinion and the other half about games sales, the average consumer, the core audience, and what not. Meh.

Why don't developers make more cellshaded games for Wii? RS2 looks really good this way, I can't wait to try it out and see if the gameplay delivers.

Because then they'd have to actually try, and developers abhor trying.

I wonder though if RS3 will even happen. This game seems to be sent to die.
