Is it so much to ask for Sony to just eliminate the black bars? They look really nasty and take away from the actual action.

man this looks awesome, I for one enjoy the use of filters. kind of reminds me of mass effect 1, that employed some sort of filter if I recall correctly.

I'm sure they have an explanation but not putting the HUD elements on the black bars takes the fucking piss.
I wonder if their engine even "knows" about anything outside of the aspect ratio.

The colour grading on this is fuckin aggressive. They really went for that antique look.

I want to be excited about this game but it just isn't doing it for me. I don't know whether it's the screen ratio or the art direction, or something else.

Direct feed? Why are these screens so blurry?
Dualshockers gives no source. These are probably found somewhere in the PS Blog or something...

Not sure where OP got them or if he's just going by DS. At any rate, the compression in those jpegs is big.

Looks much better in the videos I've seen. Not sure what's going on with those shots, but they look compressed to hell. Does this game's visuals a huge disservice, to be frank.

Edit: Ahh, the old images were bad quality. These are better.

The community did a better job than Sony to promote the game, those screens looks annoying at best.

I'm ready to play it on Day One..

Doesn't really work that way. Black bars are there because nothing is being rendered there. The game doesn't have access to that area of the screen. Pushing the HUD there would just cause it to disappear. I'd be the same thing as pushing the HUD off of your monitor when playing in 16:9.

I guess we have to wait for screenshots from fellow gaffers to get some shots without motionblur on everything.

I'm not a huge fan of developers instragramming their video games (film grains, filters, blurs, etc) but this thing does look gorgeous in action, judging by the videos I've watched. More importantly, I'm pretty excited to play it as well. Next Friday can't come soon enough!

That's not how black bars work. They're empty so that you won't focus on them - putting the UI elements on them would ruin that illusion.
Turning off HUD would be great. I think putting the HUD on the black bars would probably be too distracting and ugly.
They can't put the HUD on the black bars. The game has no access to that part of the screen because it's outside of the rendered area.

Durante would probably have a better understanding of whether or not that's even possible though.

I need a survival horror game that looks like this.
Wouldn't even mind the black bars. ;p

Exactly. This is the worst it has looked by a wide margin and seems to be compressed to hell and back. Thankfully, I have seen gameplay of the retail build and it is absolutely jaw dropping.
