i'll be honest, i dont have a ps4. game only on pc, i will watch a full walkthrough on youtube. the game length does not bother me. its just that i never felt the game special in any way, and the black bars seems more technical limitation rather than artistic choice in order to get a decent framerate

I'll attempt it. It may be loading assets in the background, there may be a period requiring user input. It also may be that it is too difficult to do the seamless gameplay to cutscene transition *and* add the ability to skip it.

I am a gamer who thinks unskippable cutscenes are a valid decision in some kinds of games and I don't mind them in really any kind of game anyways.

AMA.

But its not black and white situation, its not a switch, You can implement it on cutscenes to cutscene basis. You can have unskippable cutscenes and skippable cutscenes within a same game, many games done this in the past.

Having all unskippable like The Order 1886 or Max Payne 3 seem not smart.

Maybe it's too early to ask, but can we expect any Story DLC?

I almost feel like the ending would lend itself more to DLC than a full-blown sequel. You'd expect a sequel to be The Order: [SOME OTHER YEAR], whilst the game leaves room open for more of The Order to explore the early days of 1887.

But it is a deciding factor on whether or not someone wants to drop $60 on a game they could complete in a sitting or two.
This. So many people seem to not get this. I am not prepared to spend £40 on a game that I can finish in a day or two. For people that are willing to buy it fair play to them.

The lack of replayability and low number hours means I will get this when its cheaper if the story and gameplay is good.

If its a 8-9 hour game on average some people are likely to go beyond 12 or so while other might finish under 6. Just like most TPS it seems, we'll see.

We're talking about one specific playthrough that's already on the higher end of what's being described, not an average. So unless we have someone saying it took them 14 hours for a playthrough, it's just plain making things up about length to say it ranges that high.

Sony has a mess on their hands with the launch of this game. The full game can be readily be seen on YouTube and many stores has broken street date. Review embargo until Thursday seems silly right now.

I dont think that duration is that much concerning in general. I think people will be more negative about amount on cutscenes and QTE vs gameplay, than overall time spent on the game.

For example Max Payne 1 is generally 5h game, but it has big replay value due to combat and very small cutscene filler in comparison to the gameplay.

This attitude to totally understandable and acceptable to any reasonable person. My issue is with those that take issue with the fact that no 8 hour story only game should exist because they don't personally value them.

I think given the integrated design of the game, skipping cutscenes in The Order sounds awkward and janky as hell.

That's the thing, though. I'm not sure how someone would know unless they were timing themselves. Or are they using some in-game counter?

Unless you are timing your play sessions with a stopwatch and keeping track I don't know what to make of a person's timekeeping, especially over footage I can watch.

But 8.5 seems more reasonable than 12.5 hours and still not having completed the game.

that would be the sweet spot for this kind of game to me

difficulty?

Normal.

And I think he just timed it. Unless there's a counter at the end?

I do think this is a case where they should be issuing copyright strikes for the videos because its such a story and visual game. If you watch it and lose interest in buying its the same effect as piracy.

They could allow smaller segments or earlier bits but uploading the full game play through is just like uploading a full movie to me.

If you lose interest after watching footage of a video game is it the viewer's fault though? Video games are about interactive entertainment whereas a movie is a passive experience. In my opinion, if a game wants to present a story, the developers of the game should do their best to make the gameplay just as engaging as the story rather than a scaffold to get you to the next cutscene.

Naughty Dog, for instance, has done that pretty well with their last few games.

I don't know. I think that if the entire playthrough of TLOU had leaked on youtube a lot of people would not bother with playing.

I think the problem is more with spoilers than with people choices to play or not. After the entire game is available on youtube is easier to gather the information and post it anywhere.

He said 9 hours. Where are you getting the extra 5 from? I think 9-10 is really good for this sort of game. There's no reason to exaggerate.

One GAFer said 9 hours. Another 10 hours, another 12, and one more 14 hours. Those are the confirmed completion times we have from members who got the game early, on this forum at least.

If you watch it and decide it isn't worth playing through then that's down the game's fault and/or that persons tastes.

Why should anyone needlessly have their wallet stung with a product they won't enjoy?
So, I assume it's not just me when I say that it ends very abruptly? So many threads left hanging!

How else would they introduce TO:xx87?

IIRC some of those times were qualified as with breaks, not just strict game time.

Am I allowed to post a screenshot here? It has no spoilers, just shows one of the remarkable environments during gameplay.

Here's one gameplay area. I love the attention to detail throughout, although there seems to be some kind of grey filter that compromises the color.

Promised myself to stop buying games before reviews/impressions are out, so by releasing the game on Friday with the embargo on Thursday makes it almost impossible for someone that wants to wait and still have the game in time for the weekend (retail copy), so dumb. Just put the embargo at the beginning of the week, the later the embargo the more suspicion you'll have around your game.

Oh well, fucking over the consumer, nothing new there.

I'll probably wait until the week after with my decision. From all I've seen/heard so far, it's still in the average camp in my mind.

Man, the ending of this game is an enormous anti-climax.

Not just the final boss fight; the last shooting section is only around eleven minutes, nowhere near as long or involved as some of the previous chapters, and it doesn't have much to set it apart. It also comes after a big block of cutscenes.

Wow the last 2 impressions I've read are right are right where I thought this game would end up :(. Very brief, mostly tight corridors, almost on rails at parts, lots of cutscenes. Solid gunplay, decent game, amazing production values :(.

Definitely feels like they're either gunning for a sequel or ran out of time/budget.

If your argument is that companies should abuse the DMCA you might want to rethink your argument.

I am just going to go under the assumption that the length will be around 10 hours, which is fine with me, so long as those 10 hours are fulfilling.

Which begs the question:

For those who have the game, how are you enjoying it thus far?

I just realized the plot hole in this scene.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WAa9bxTW8no
The guard tells them that no weapons are allowed inside, and yet somehow they walk into a room where a customer not only has a pistol in site but also a machine gun.

-_-
Clearly he snuck those in on the off-chance he'd be attacked by a video game protagonist while being ridden by a whore. They didn't have viagra in those days and, given his sorry state when he was found, he knew he'd be there a while.

Erectile dysfunction is no laughing matter.

Oh shit, it still looks like that.
That's pretty cool. Wonder how the inside looks.

Those small mistakes add up and put video game storytelling behind film.

completely feel this. (dont think they were gunning for a sequel as much as how they have mentioend in interviews the overall story is huge and the original vision was immense and they had to cut down and fit what they could. I think they cut down a bit too much on the length aspect. Given the heavy focus on the story this game should have been about a 1/3ish longer and it would ahve been a good/great game. That would also have allayed many of the game length questions.
