The Pokedex entries for Sun and Moon are outta control

The best ones are for Salazzle and Tsareena. Both of these are from Sun.

Salazzle: "For some reason, only females have been found. It creates a reverse harem of male Salandit that it lives with"

Everything about Salazzle is so good in how pokedex entry, design, animations, moves it learns and abilities at its disposal are around the same theme

This whole game has a bit of a dark side. See the Fling TM cutscene or the side quest to get the Eevee z crystal.

I'm in the middle of the Eevee Z-Crystal quest, and Jesus Christ, it gets dark.

The Jolteon user being hinted at having some of mental degenerative disease is all kinds of fucked.

EDIT:
Nooooooooooooooo @ the Sylveon user.

When did Pokemon become shin megami tensei. I haven't bought these Pokemon games since I got the older 3ds model and apparently it's a considerable downgrade.

Holy crap is that real?? That's incredible... who the hell is writing these? Treehouse staff?

Treehouse hasn't worked on a Pokemon game in a long time. They're handled by TPC, due to the complexities of having to localize into so many languages for near-simultaneous releases.

Tempy

don't ask me for codes
In the anime Meowth almost dies after taking a peek at Mimikyu's true form.

The writing in this game in general makes me feel if Sea Mauville was the standard approach to most stuff. A generally lighthearted story gives way to darker themes on introspection. I recall some people saying that Pokemon was their successor to the Mother series. It seems that to be the case here. The thing is, the writers for this game aren't really different from past games, so it probably came from the change in direction.

Hmm, for the first time I'm actually interested in playing a Pokemon game. Bought a N3DS on BF, can I just jump in to Sun/Moon if I've never played a Pokemon game before?

Probably, there are references to previous generations, but for the most part, it's rather self contained. I personally recommend going into the options menu and changing the game mode from Shift to Set and turning off the EXP share when you get it, it makes for a more satisfying experience in my opinion if you do get it.

Spoink in Ruby was the OP, tbh

Spoink bounces around on its tail. The shock of its bouncing makes its heart pump. As a result, this Pokémon cannot afford to stop bouncing - if it stops, its heart will stop.

Were there any fucked-up ones that pre-date GenIII?

Yeah, I haven't played Sun/Moon yet, but all pokemon games are stand alone and have no overarching story to them. You play as different characters, etc.

The contrast between versions for Araquanid is quite something

Moon: Despite what its appearance suggests, it cares for others. If it finds vulnerable, weak Pokémon, it protectively brings them into its water bubble.
Good guy Araquanid

Sun: It delivers headbutts with the water bubble on its head. Small Pokémon get sucked into the bubble, where they drown.
Oh...good guy status revoked.

Most horrifying is Bewear to me, although the one about Primape committing inadvertent suicide because of how angry they are is up there

Wait what? man I just got the moon version stuff about still being angry inside the pokeball, let me look this up...
"It has been known to become so angry that it dies as a result. Its face looks peaceful in death, however"
Awww, that's sweet.

I can't recall any Pokemon game which would require any prior experience.

No mention of Shedinja?

292Shedinja.png

Pokédex Entry for Ruby:

Shedinja's hard body doesn't move - not even a twitch. In fact, its body appears to be merely a hollow shell. It is believed that this Pokémon will steal the spirit of anyone peering into its hollow body from its back.

Keep in mind that when using a Pokémon in combat, you have a view from behind it.

And the fact that this thing steals a Pokéball and invades your team as a result of you evolving another Pokémon (Nincada).
So does Shedinja have Cheap Trick stuck on its back?

Nah they're good Ahola region is just straight with people that some of these pokemon are straight up dangerous and will kill you in fact many seek out to just kill people.

Dhelmise
The soul of seaweed adrift in the waves became reborn as this Pokémon. It maintains itself with new infusions of seabed detritus and seaweed.

Haunter

Its tongue is made of gas. If licked, its victim starts shaking constantly until death eventually comes. (Silver)

It hides in the dark, planning to take the life of the next living thing that wanders close by. (Crystal)

Drowzee

It remembers every dream it eats. It rarely eats the dreams of adults because childrens are much tastier. (Silver)

Speaking of old fucked up entries

Cacturne

If a traveler is going through a desert in the thick of night, Cacturne will follow in a ragtag group. The Pokémon are biding their time, waiting for the traveler to tire and become incapable of moving.
-Sapphire

Cacturne eat people who get to tired in the desert.

Literally always. Gengars entry has always been that. There's no downgrade between 3DS versions. Framerate is just bad.

Salazzle: "For some reason, only females have been found. It creates a reverse harem of male Salandit that it lives with"

Tsareena: "Its long, striking legs aren’t just for show but to be used to kick with skill. In victory, it shows off by kicking the defeated, laughing boisterously."

And Nintendo wants to STOP porn? Granted these are more sexy than scary but i still classify them under outta control.
This is the Sun entry...I have Sun and a Naughty natured Tsareena and never bothered to read this. Lol Game Freak don't give a sh*t anymore.

I'm in the "Sun & Moon's pokedex descriptions are par for the course" camp. I remember hearing the Pokedex entry for Drifloon back in Diamond/Pearl, about how sometimes children mistake it for a balloon and get kidnapped as a result. And that was originally written ten years ago!

It's just there are like, 900 Pokemon now. That's a lot of room to write some pretty creepy descriptions. Sort of like how we have nearly 60 Legendary Pokemon as of Sun & Moon. You have five or six creepy Pokemon per game, and that really begins to add up over time.

Here's more, from previous Pokemon games:

urLr8ic.png

Misdreavus (Emerald)
"A Misdreavus frightens people with a creepy, sobbing cry. It apparently uses its red spheres to absorb the fear of foes as its nutrition."

5p3ONFs.png

Shuppet (Black & White 2)
"It feeds on the dark emotions of sadness and hatred, which make it grow steadily stronger."

0EeWxKA.png

Duskull
"It loves the crying of children. It startles bad kids by passing through walls and making them cry. " (Platinum)
"It doggedly pursues its prey wherever it goes. However, the chase is abandoned at sunrise. " (Diamond/Pearl)
"If it finds bad children who won't listen to their parents, it will spirit them away--or so it's said. " (HGSS)

X9aftLF.png

Haunter
"In total darkness, where nothing is visible, Haunter lurks, silently stalking its next victim. " (Gold)
"Its tongue is made of gas. If licked, its victim starts shaking constantly until death eventually comes." (Silver)
"It hides in the dark, planning to take the life of the next living thing that wanders close by. " (Crystal)

Kdu6HPw.png

Gengar (Fire Red)
"It is said to emerge from darkness to steal the lives of those who become lost in mountains. "

MDokqVW.png

Lampent
"This ominous Pokémon is feared. Through cities it wanders, searching for the spirits of the fallen." (Black)
"It arrives near the moment of death and steals spirit from the body." (White)
"The spirits it absorbs fuel its baleful fire. It hangs around hospitals waiting for people to pass on. " (Black & White 2)

VQ9H1HG.png

Gourgeist (Pokemon Y)
"It enwraps its prey in its hairlike arms. It sings joyfully as it observes the suffering of its prey."

3Tuttde.png

Marowak (Crystal)
"Somewhere in the world is a cemetery just for Marowak. It gets its bones from those graves."

xvaD34n.png

Shedinja (Ruby)
"Shedinja's hard body doesn't move - not even a twitch. In fact, its body appears to be merely a hollow shell. It is believed that this Pokémon will steal the spirit of anyone peering into its hollow body from its back."

Yeah I've seen some of these a while back from a friend's Twitter feed. Quaintly young-adult, but the devs here have the chance to show more of that side of Poke-earth, 'specially with Ghost types and whatnot, so why not. Throw some shadow!

Well, in the earliest games, the Pokemon professors hired children to do Pokedex research for them, so it was all cozy campfire tales. Later gens, I wanna say around Black/White, featured teenage protagonists, so it was only a matter of time before the Pokedex begun to reflect that.

Man, these are lame. I know there were plenty like it before SM, but now it feels like 7 out of 10 pokemon have an entry like that and it feels like they're trying too hard lol, it's especially weird considering SM (and by extension its anime) are the goofiest installments yet. Like I'm just waiting for Stars to say Pikachu likes to curse and takes money from its parents. Did Ninja Theory help make these games?

Literally always. Gengars entry has always been that. There's no downgrade between 3DS versions. Framerate is just bad.

Actually there is a downgrade. They both run awful but on n3DS the framedrops are way less frequent, among other things... I mean, the OG 3DS has literal loading times before move animations during totem battles lmao, it's awful. Still definitely not a Hyrule Warriors Legends situation.

Actually the Pokedex is being written by a ghost Pokemon this time, so that's probably a bigger factor. The player is just 11 again.

I actually don't like how over the top they are this time. Pokemon always had plenty of great, subtle creepy entries.

I choose to believe is just Rotom enjoying being spooky.

There is massive disconnect between the tone and reality of the world & what the pokedex says.

They should drop the BS & try to establish some internal consistency. You know thats not how pokemon actually behave in the wild.

So far, I've found the idea of Araquanid being a predator that drowns its prey with headbutts to be pure nightmare fuel:

It delivers headbutts with the water bubble on its head. Small Pokémon get sucked into the bubble, where they drown.

Makes it more real there can't be only good pokemon i love the darker dex entries.

Also one of the reasons Sun and Moon being the best pokemon games ever imo.

I think this is great. It makes it realistic. Why should a ghost Pokémon be friendly, why don't Pokémon prey on each other? All of this happens in the real animal kingdom so why not Pokémon. I mean animals can kill us if provoke, so this realistic inclusion has made this my favorite gen since Silver. I welcome it
